This photo was taken just before a monsoon hit Bristol. It poured down rain like cats and dogs for 15 minutes. We huddled under the awning that was attached to kevin humphrie's motor home when it started raining...then all of a sudden, the awning retracted as the downpour began...and we all got wet...there wasn't enough room for 20+ people in his camper. It seems that his RV came with an automatic retractable awning..whenever wind speeds got too high...so we just got soaking wet.

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/17/2014

Who is the humanoid in the middle of this photo?

Nancy Hinds4/18/2014

JBM hired me - he was amazing - it was the old days. I left work every day to go pick up his girls at ICU. And possibly the dry cleaning. I remember him being at lunch w/ Bentley, Richard, JJ and one of the girls int he office just kept taking messages for them - it was ORD dispatch and one of the first cities to go live. I finally picked up a radio and said - "Uh - you might want to tip back on in"...That lady did not last long. And those are his Grands huh? WOW

Jim Bentley? Radio DADS?

Angela Maynard4/17/2014

Didn't he leave FedEx to work for the City of Memphis IT dept?

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/17/2014

This is the Jim Bentley, co-developer of DADS and did much work in LineHaul rolling out systems. He was offered a Director job with the City of Memphis, but turned it down, when his mgmt. would not grant a leave of absence.

Buddy Johnson4/18/2014

Good pix, Mr B.

J. David White4/19/2014

That's Bentley. He took the wedding photos at mine & Diane's wedding on Feb. 18, 1989!

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/19/2014

Jim took wedding photos of my sisterInLaw in the early 80's, then my son's wedding about 7 years ago, and my second son's wedding last year. He's a great photographer.

Nancy Hinds4/20/2014

Mr. Bentley also wrote the first database for us to use when NOBODY had one. We could track radio site information - maintenance - circuits and other dandy info. A really good guy...And he takes a darn nice picture as in the one above - so he is good on both end of the camera

Rebecca Felts4/24/2014

Did he take the buyout?

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/24/2014

He didn't say, but I would guess he would have with that many years in.

Rebecca Felts4/24/2014

If he didnt then he did not make a smart decision. Ha

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/25/2014

Skip did take the buyout, and the last group leaves Friday May 30th.

Subject: Met former FedExr at my 45 Class Reunion...

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/27/2014

I had my 45 year Frayser Class Reunion this weekend (1969) and got to talk again with classmate and friend David Everett. David was one of the pioneers in developing FedEx systems starting in 1977 to 1984. He was hired by Steve Steilling because he knew programming and accounting, and Steve wanted an expert in both. He started writing programs on the Burroughs and then transitioned to the IBM system with the Cook IT buyout. He was the one who coded Prism to recognize your birthday and put a message on the green screen. He remembered project Butterfly? when the young ops research group would run their models. They would make an announcement that the model was running at 2:15...then everyone would go home, because the systems were useless, it was so slow. Here is a list of some of David's projects below. He left FedEx for ATKearney and now has his own firm in Dallas:IT from 1978 to 19801. Converted a Honeywell Fixed Asset system to Burroughs.2. Converted the Burroughs Fixed Asset system above to IBM (after FedEx bought the Cook data center)3. Developed and implemented online IMS-based Purchasing System4. Converted Casper HR system to online IMS-based Human Resource System (I forget what we called it). Had some fun with this. When the folks in HR logged in, the system would greet them by name, wish them a Happy Birthday and also provide holiday greetings.Cost Accounting 1980 to 19821. Standardized & automated Landing Fee Reports to 100+ airports using SAS to integrate multiple data sources2. Taught the entire department how to use Mark43. Used SAS & Mark4 to automated 80+% of Cost Accounting reporting4. Used SAS to develop the first standard cost report for each serviceLogistics 1982 to 19841. Led a team (user and IT) that designed and Implemented LOGOS, the logistics management system used for order processing, warehousing and inventory management in Distribution Services and Ground Support Services

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/30/2014

Question: does anyone know what FedEx's gun policy is currently? when I left you couldn't carry a gun into premises of course, but you also couldn't have one in your car, even if parked on public property from a building that FedEx rents. Just asking after latest violence at a fedex facility

Don Rose4/30/2014

Last I heard was that the policy had not changed. No guns in car.

Jere Bledsoe4/30/2014

I remember when the first gun policy was written. One of the system development manages brought a gun to a meeting and laid it on the conference table as a joke. It scared the hell out of some of the attendees. Thus, we got the first gun policy. DR, do you remember that?

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/30/2014

Jere do you remember about what year that was?

Buddy Johnson4/30/2014

That was called 'gunfight at OK corral', involving Hubert Fisher and Ray White. That was in 1980-81.

Jere Bledsoe4/30/2014

Jimmy, I really don't remember the exact year. It was sometime shortly after 1978 since I do remember who did it and when they joined FedEx. Maybe Don will remember better.

Jere Bledsoe4/30/2014

Okay, Buddy knew. I wasn't going to name names but Buddy did.

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/30/2014

I do remember in the early 80's at 2955 republican, someone came into the building at night looking for his girlfriend..with a gun.... a fence went up shortly after, and a security guard placed at the front desk.

Good for Edith. Helping others while still staying in the business world. BZ!

Angela Maynard5/6/2014

She is a class act!!

Jimmy Glenn Burk5/6/2014

My team was working on a $65M project and needed to write multiple po's and contracts and needed backup plans. There were over 200 purchases to be made, and I didn't need to have 3 bids on every item, that her dept required; we didn't have the time. FWS had relayed that the project timelines couldn't slip, and the project wouldn't fail. Two of Edith's mgrs were giving conflicting requirements and adding bureacracy to the project. I requested a meeting with Edith & her directors & managers. As she listened to what I needed, her two managers suddenly started arguing with each other... Edith immediately recognized a dysfunctional attitude, and said something like "Jimmy, I need a few minutes with my staff alone. I'm sure we can work something out to meet your needs" About an hour later, we reconvened, and Edith relayed what they could do with the rules, and how her department would meet the needs of the project....her management team sat silently... Edith was a class act, and she acted immediately when needed and her staff responded after that mtg.

As I read these and other emails and FB posts one thing really jumps out: FedEx is not such a happy place to work anymore. I saw that beginning before I left and obviously things have only gotten worse. That is sad. If upper management sincerely wants FedEx to stay strong and remain a world class company they're going to have address the decline of the People Policy upon which FedEx owes it's great success.
