speaking of doctors.... How would Dr. Burk like to be referred to???? I gave the first presentation at the first ZComm meeting and about every month thereafter. FWS chaired and the kingpins of the company attended monthly. Ted Weise was then president of FedEx Express. As I answered questions at the end of the presentation, FWS several times referred to me as Dr. Burk which didn't phase me as he had done this occasionally before. I had taught classes at CBU but didn't have a doctorate, only an Bachelors in Electrical Engr.... but he was allowed to call me whatever he wanted. A few hours later my admin gets a call from Teds office."'Mr Weise needed to send correspondence to Dr. Burk and he wanted to know how he wanted to be referred to...in the correspondence....?" Kaye didn't hesitate to answer...he wants to referred to as JIMMY or JIMMY BURK..... She did think it was nice of them to ask though......

FedEx Trivia QuizIn the 1980's FedEx researched providing same day service from Europe to the US.a. How were they going to do this? b. What aircraft was to be used? c. Why didn't they proceed with the plan?

Peter Dangerfield7/3/2014

Concord, couldn't get British Airways to maintain the aircraft for ten years. Fred said a Concord full of P1 envelopes would have been very profitable.

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/3/2014

from Winn Stephenson: To my recollection, FedEx would lease a Concord and be able to fly west bound and easily make a same day delivery. I think it was canned for two reasons - financially impracticable and the structure of the Concord would not allow a cargo door.

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/3/2014

Pete is correct. http://heritageconcorde.com/technical-2/the-concorde-fleet/concorde-g-boag/g-boag-condition-today/work/concorde-freighter

FedEx Trivia Quiz Which of the following databases was not used in unix system?a. sybase b. oracle c. informix d. db2

Charles Morgan7/7/2014

Db2

Buddy Johnson7/7/2014

Ditto

Don Beethe7/7/2014

Informix. Loaded several DB2 servers.

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/8/2014

Don, was db2 loaded on ibm aix systems?

Don Beethe7/8/2014

dunno, only deal with Linux and HPUX nowdays.. Haven't seen AIX in 10 years

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/9/2014

The answer may be all of these databases were used since Don deployed DB2 on linux systems. The answer...I thought was DB2. DB2 is usually associated with IBM mainframes, but can be loaded on open platforms. Oracle is the predominant DB at FedEx now. Informix was the most commonly used database initially starting with SCO Xenix Sybase was used heavily by Chronos and in software only FedExShip products

Don Beethe7/9/2014

sybase was also used by LSSI. Oldtimers will recognize ziploc. LSSI is the distributed ziploc app.

Charles Morgan7/9/2014

We also used INGRES on some early SCO boxes too, as it too was bundled with SCO in some releases

Leigh Pritchett Sawicki7/9/2014

I also thought the answer was DB2. (This coming from a previous COBOL M/F programmer).

Leigh Pritchett Sawicki7/9/2014

Great woman! When she was vp of Infosec, I applied for a job, knowing I was not quite qualified for (a direct report position). Rather than sending me the normal letter she scheduled some time with me! I went and was shaking in my shoes but I left that conversation feeling very inspired and empowered to keep reaching for the stars!!! A true example of how you NEVER forget how people make you feel!

Shirley Lovelace Williams7/9/2014

Belinda Watkins. I worked for her before she left to go to Jimmy Dean. She came back to FedEx but I didn't apply for her assistant position because I was close to retiring. Great person to work for.

Gary Phillips7/9/2014

Belinda is good people. Worked with her in Network Engineering when she first started. Have been friends since.

Steven Swanberg7/27/2014

When me and 499 of my closest technical friends at FedEx found ourselves suddenly unemployed April 2009 shortly thereafter Belinda hooked me up with an interview with Memphis City School systems. Completely unexpected and one more credit for her 'good folks' credentials. (Thankfully they chose another person and shortly thereafter I returned to FedEx as soon as the one-year stricture was over).

Subject: Vernitta Rogers

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/9/2014

Vernitta RogersSomeone asked about Vernitta Rogers who was one of the early early employees of FedEx. The internet lists a Vernitta Rogers, age 70, living in Forrest City Arkansas. She was always talking about the land she owned in Arkansas and hopes to retire there.

Marie McVay7/9/2014

Loved Vernitta! She said it like it was, kept us all laughing and made me blush a few times ....

Jere Bledsoe7/9/2014

Vernitta is a hoot. Smart lady too even though she generally didn't care if anyone thought she acted like a lady or not. I mean that kindly. She was really fun to be around in the early days when I worked with her. I hope she is happy and well.

Don Rose7/9/2014

Fantastic woman who would tell anyone that they were full of it. I miss Vernitta a lot and think about her often. She had a young son named Shane, and when we all worked on Saturday & Sunday (which we always did), she would put him in a cardboard box and let him play while we all worked. Great days back then.

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/9/2014

Did any of you ever get neck massages?

Terrie Hoerning7/10/2014

Vernitta was such a fun person to be around. She knew how to get the job done, and had a talent to make the process fun. I had the pleasure to work for her during our ZapMail days.

Don Rose7/10/2014

Jimmy, I think everyone got a neck massage.

Jere Bledsoe7/11/2014

I'd bet even FWS got a Vernitta neck massage at some time or other.

I've posted this photo before, but came across it again...and remember how much I despise ties then and now. I would like to meet the person who invented the tie for men. Only Gary Holmes could somehow get away from the mandatory tie law.Did the first IT employees have to wear ties?? don't have the answer, just wondering

Don Rose7/9/2014

Yes, we had to wear ties Jimmy.

George Moore7/9/2014

I remember wearing a tie everyday

Subject: Dress Policy: Wearing Shorts

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/10/2014

Dress Policy: Wearing ShortsSomehow, someway, the COS folks got to wear shorts to work. The then vp allowed it, the SVP who lived elsewhere said it wasn't going on, but it was.I had about 40 people in COS reporting into my org. On a visit I met with the group and the subject of wearing shorts came up. I figured they were going to ask to wear shorts...but our SVP Winn Stephenson wouldn't allow it, so I was just waiting for the question...the Question: Could you stop this wearing shorts on the campus?????I was somewhat shocked and asked why?the Answer: it would be nice to wear shorts on very hot days, but some of these people wearing shorts are just gross in shorts. we can't take it any more...so, I responded, that I would ask the VP who allowed shorts, and the SVP who dis-avowed that anyone was wearing shorts, to stop the wearing of the short.Dress Policy: wearing hose(for ladies)On another visit to Orlando where I had 50 people in my org the subject of dress code came up. I assumed again it was shorts, but was wrong again.A nice lady employee asked if I could do something about the policy requiring ladies to wear hose.Well I didn't know that ladies had to wear hose, but in some policy somewhere, that was the case.It was approaching 100 degrees that day and humid in Orlando.I gave an executive order that they did not have to wear hose. I probably didn't have any authority to change anything....but it was just common sense. The ladies were happy....still no requests for shorts....

Connie Morgan7/10/2014

If those who made the policy wore them hose in 100 degree weather, they would gladly change the policy! Lol!

Dan Elliot7/11/2014

Hey, can we wear shorts in orlando?

Marsha Terry Rider7/11/2014
