FedEx Sightings 9/21/14:Went to Kroger to shop & ran into two old friends: Dewey Hemphill & Lydle SimpsonHave known Dewey since around 1974 where he was the Director of Computer Ops at DCC in Memphis. DCC had 2 Burroughs 6700 mainframes plus a Honeywell Multics mainframe. ( I taught myself Algol, Cobol & PL/1 on these systems.)Dewey & Don Sparks came to FedEx in the early 1980's to Revenue Systems working under Charlie Germano. Dewey worked in several FedEx divisions before he retired. He now lives in Lakeland, and teaches courses for the Univ of Arkansas-Fayetteville & the Univ of Memphis.Have known Lydle since the early 80's. He was a Manager in Systems development for many years. After retirement he served as vendor reps for several major FedEx IT suppliers. Lydle lives in Cordova

Don Rose9/21/2014

I know them both well. I used to run into Lydle now and then, but I haven't seen Dewey in many years.

Penny Hitchcock Hopper9/22/2014

Glad to hear that they're both well.

Jimmy Glenn Burk9/22/2014

I first met Lydle around 1981. I was writing the DADS software, and across the hall from my office, Chuck Deiotte from COS set up an Apple II computer w/ a sony tv, a TI-810 printer and a 5" floppy drive. Lydle and Mark Ramsey were checking it out to program the Apple in Basic to solve a FedEx problem. Many customers were willing to give FedEx 100's and even 1000's of packages a week...but refused to fill out the airbills. The Apple II came on the scene and a database of the customers would be installed. The customers could then just select their customers, and voila ..pre-printed airbills were done for them. An example was a video tape company which would sent out 10's of thousands of videos each week, all weighing the same and packaged the same. So the Apple II became the first customer automation device and volumes continued to grow. Not sure if it was Lydle or Mark or both who did the initial programs. After COSMOS IIa was implemented, which was scanning packages at the hub and in/out of the stations...Mark added a routine to allow the apple II to dial the mainframe and then do tracking on all the customer deliveries.

Buddy Johnson9/22/2014

We (Cindy and I) expect to see Dewey at their 50th HS class reunion in a couple of weeks. Glad Lydle is also doing well. Worked in Sys Dev with him for many years, Lydle - hope your golf game is still kickin' butt!!!

Yes, Don. That would be interesting!!!

Nancy Hinds9/24/2014

Yes many name changes for the young ladies - ok more than 1 for some of us over achievers. The GOOD ole Clark Tower days. Britlings for breakfast - open first thing in the AM - a drug store - post office - and of course the always dandy Elans...

Nancy Hinds9/24/2014

And Jim Bentley would get in the elevator and starting bouncing it just to hear all the girls squeak - and we did...Bentley and JJ would just chuckle.

I'm listed under Terrie Tielens. At that time it was my responsibility to get the directory published. As soon as it was produced it was out of date. It was back in the good old hanger 7 days.

MemphisDailyNews.comFedEx Shareholders Reject Proposal Over RedskinsFedEx shareholders rejected a proposal that the shipping giant end or distance itself from its ties to the Washington Redskins. The proposal from the Oneida Indian tribe was made Monday, Sept. 29, during the company's annual shareholder meeting in Memphis. The Redskins and companies associated with the National Football League team have come under fire from Native American groups and others who say the team's name is an offensive racial slur. FedEx sponsors the Redskins home field, FedExField, in Washington, D.C.'s Maryland suburbs.Susan White, director of the Oneida Trust of the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin, said the name Redskins harkens to a time when rewards were paid for the skins of Native Americans.“We are the only race of people dehumanized by an NFL team,” White said during the meeting. The shareholders meeting was the second time in less than a week that the company’s sponsorship deal with the Redskins was in the spotlight. On Sept. 25, the Osage Nation of Oklahoma said it would boycott FedEx and urged its members to use other delivery companies until FedEx ends its relationship with the team.FedEx shareholders also rejected a proposal that would have allowed shareholders to make nominations to the company's board of directors.– Amos Maki

Wade Waldrup9/30/2014

What's with this? Who are the shareholders who in this day and age deem that it is okay to continue to associate with those who degrade and dehumanize a noble native people? Shame on you all.

Debora Williams Waller10/1/2014

I passed by the FB post several times before I decided to watch it. I knew this incident was very horrifying and sad, but I did watch it. This reenactment was very well done. The pilots and engineer were very brave and determined men.

Debora Williams Waller10/1/2014

I left work early that day driving from Nonconnah & Democrat,. south on Airways and noticed the DC-10 at the end of the runway and wondered why it had stopped there.

George Moore10/1/2014

I got the DVD from the History channel. I did not know it had been uploaded to you tube.

J. David White10/1/2014

I went to a retirement party shortly after this event (on FE 705) for friend Sam Posey who was the retiring president of the Fire Fighters Local in Memphis Fire Dept., and the MFD Paramedics that went on-board the grounded DC-10 (FE 705), had to fight their way into the cockpit because Auburn Callaway was still fighting everyone. The Firefighters had to throw Callaway down the emergency shute slide to get him off the aircraft. That aircrew was brave and gravely injured in that fight. Can you imagine being hit in the head with a hammer by someone who didn't like you? The Memphis FD Paramedics were roughed up a little by Callaway before they threw him off.

J. David White10/1/2014

God bless and protect our "First Responders".

J. David White10/1/2014

I had just left the FedEx computer campus on Airways when I saw that grounded DC-10 sitting on the runway. Whew - It sends shivers down my back when you consider what may have happened if Callaway had actually gained control of FE 705 aircraft. Would he have crashed it into the MEM Hub?

Ronnie Foster10/1/2014

Jump seated with Callaway from Memphis to LA about 3 week earlier. He was the Flt Engineer on that flight. I was flying with another DNE engineer Phong Nygen and we thought nothing about the guy, other than some rude comments he made to Phong during our trip, until this happened. Phong still had his business card that Callaway had given him during our flight. Whoa! Pretty scary thinking about it.

Chuck Siegfried10/3/2014

a rude comment from a pilot is normal....isn't it.

Management by 3 lettersThis story seemed to work at FedEx occasionally when someone from the outside comes in to take a new management position. Lot's of times, I was asked to give overviews of the company to new managers, directors and sometimes VP's. It was always interesting. Most wanted to know who in the company was going to help them, and who to watch out for that might be politically motivated. I saw an article on the 3 letters which brought this back to my memory. In some cases the new management people just wanted to know if I knew what the bonus were going to be and how often they would get raises...I knew that these people wouldn't last a year.3 Letters: A new management person comes into a company, the outgoing manager tells him that when things aren't going right to open in order the 3 letters.Six months later nothing is working...the manager opens the First LetterLetter #1 Blame your predecessor....that gets the person about six months of relief and he then opens the second letterLetter #2 Re-org ...We aren't organized right! ...........Reorg..that gets some more relief but six months later...things aren't going right and he opens the third letterLetter #3 Prepare 3 letters ------------------- ...another variation was to Blame the employees.... ...another variation...We don't have enough Proj Management

Don Rose10/3/2014

Boy, pretty dead on.

Jim McBryde10/3/2014

In my experience, the third letter would be its not my fault, we just reorged.

LunchHad lunch with old friend Jim Bentley today in honor of his 6x birthday. He is always a fun guy, really the same as when I met him decades ago.Met Jim in 1979 on my FedEx interview and spent many hours in his office for the Memphis DADS testing. His office on the 17th floor of Clark Tower was set up as Dispatch for Memphis. He probably got me in more trouble than I can remember...or want to remember. Also on that interview met Kay Coop, Suzanne Gaal, John Schwarzmann, Dick Winter, Jim Moore, Richard Dunn and I had already known Ancel Hankins & Terry Cox from DCC.
