FedEx Trivia QuizThe folks in SIS(Strategic Integrated Systems) had a little rolling wheel interfaced to the end of the Supertracker, which was tested but not deployed. What did the little rolling wheel do?

Measure dimensions?
Jimmy Glenn Burk3/4/2015

FedEx Trivia QuizIn the mid 90's the SVP of Air Ops insisted on loading to production a piece of software called 'The Optimizer' in spite of warnings from the ITD staff that it needed to be tested more than one month. It would optimize pilot schedules to save money.
It was loaded, causing some havoc on flight schedules.
The pilots were in negotiations for a new contract at the time. The Pilots renamed the piece of software, What did they call it?
Peter Dangerfield3/4/2015
It was from American Airlines SABA system, called CRS Crew Scheduling System. The crew probably called it the ball buster!

Ellen Kirk Hunter3/4/2015
There was a time when people from all over the company volunteered and were taught to use the equipment. Don't know if this is still a practice.
Jimmy Glenn Burk3/4/2015
Ellen is correct. The de-ice crew are volunteers from the hub and anywhere who receive specialized training.
Peter Dangerfield3/4/2015
Well Jimmy in the Falcon day before we could afford expensive deciding equipment and fluid, we would all go and beat the ice of the wings with a piece of garden hose. Now that I think about it that's where the Purple Blood saying came from?? 😜

FedEx Trivia QuestionIn the first two years of SuperHub operations, the on time departures were at 50%.
Two things were implemented that quickly got the on time departures to 95%.a. what were the 2 things implemented?
b. who implemented these changes?
Ron Houston3/5/2015
Swag - "Positive-pull", "sort count-down clock"?? - @1982? Who - IDK:(
Jimmy Glenn Burk3/6/2015
Answers:
1. Countdown Clock
2. Hub Workers changed from minimum of 2 hours guarenteed to 4 hour minimum. Most were working a little over 2 hours anyway, so there was no incentive to work harder to do it less than 2 hours. four hour minimum gave them incentive to do it as fast as they could.
Ron Houston3/6/2015
Ah - I remember 2 - that was implemented just before I started. I also remember discussing with the mechanics on the belt that we could key faster than than the belts were moving. One night I saw a mechanic/engineer adjusting something and I inquired what he was doing and I asked if he could make the belt go faster - he said 'no' they had been told not to? ... because the keyers couldn't key that fast. I said - oh yes we can, watch this and he stayed there and adjusted the belt speed while I keyed. After that all the belts (All 12 of them) began to have competitions - I still have some of those old sort reports.
Laurie A. Tucker3/7/2015
Was it Mike Basch or Karl Birkholz?
Laurie A. Tucker3/7/2015
Btw, the minimum was 3.5 hours. I was the finance person for the Superhub and ran all the models.
Jimmy Glenn Burk3/7/2015
Mike Basch was the implementor.

Ups wasnt a competitor since they only did ground and we inly did express. Cf was freight and we didnt do that and dhl was international and we didnt do that. I think evergreen did packaging and we didnt do that either. Now, they would all be competitors.
Carl Wayne Hardeman3/5/2015
DHL for international service
Jim McBryde3/5/2015
During the early to mid 80s, airborne was the primary competitor.
Jimmy Glenn Burk3/5/2015

FedEx Trivia Quiz:FedEx management had difficulty in trying to determine if International was starting to make money, until someone created something. What did they create?
Jimmy Glenn Burk3/12/2015
When Intl started many times the planes were full going into the U.S. but had minimal loads going back. They did not want to burden the Intl divisions with full costs of the aircraft.
Someone came up with a calculation/spreadsheet distributing the costs based on loading versus the entire aircraft. The Execs agreed with the calculations and could now report costs and give more time to build package volume.
The person, whomever he/she was, won a Five Star award, as I remember.
