FedEx History Trivia:In the 90's JC Pennys was a large account for both FedEx & UPS. FedEx had most all of JCP's Express business which was $ 10M per year. UPS had most ground package business which was $ 90M per year. -------- One year FedEx bid on the same Express business for $ 10M, UPS though, bid doing both all the ground and express business for $90M!!! UPS won the express & ground business...since FedEx would have to bid $0 to get the express. ---------- 1. Why did UPS do this? 2. How did they profit from this?

Buddy Johnson2/15/2016

They wanted ALL the business. NO!!

Buddy Johnson2/15/2016

It was about market share.

Trivia Question:What movie memorabilia was FedEx accused of losing? How was ITD involved in this fiasco?

Charlie Derrick2/15/2016

Fireman's hats from "Backdraft"?

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/16/2016

Charlie is correct. Answer: A collection of Chicago firefighters' helmets who were killed in action were shipped to the Hollywood studio of the movie Backdraft. The studio said they didn't receive them. The courier said he delivered them but the delivery scan was lost when an IBM 3380 disk drive failed.

Deby Abbott Jolley2/16/2016

FedEx History Trivia:One of the requirements for a SuperTracker replacement(aka PowerPad) was to include the domestic and Intl SRG, and lots of information that the courier could use to answer customer questions, especially Intl questions.Mary Alice Taylor brought in a courier from the field to walk thru the screens, in front of Fred Smith, to show him the value of the things DGO wanted the couriers do be able to do...aka be the frontline customer service and sales to the customers.FWS was always nice to the field personnel(non mgmt types). He asked him, how he would use the device to answer a particular question about Intl rates and forms..... ---------------------- How do you think the courier answered mr. smith???

Peter Dangerfield2/15/2016

Haven't a clue but I guess he would ask what county and type package?? 😄. Can't wait to hear the real answer.

Melissa Leech Ziemer2/15/2016

Call the station and ask a Customer Service Agent. Most couriers don't have a clue about International shipping and are adverse to processing them.

Peggy Dawson Black2/15/2016

I don't know but this was one of many of my nightmares during my PowerPad tenure!

Melissa Leech Ziemer2/15/2016

The Intl SRG was useful for most basic uncomplicated shipments. Anything other than basic took too long to process for the couriers in their ever shrinking stops per hour metric. They brought those to the station Customer Service Agents.

Eva Lantrip2/15/2016

Call the 800#

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/15/2016

Eva & Melissa correct. The courier without even thinking said that he would tell them to just call Customer Service,,,who he said were the experts...he was going to stay busy as he could picking up and delivering packages...........

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/16/2016

FedEx History Trivia Answer True or False to any of the below Statements1. Zapmail machines were manufactured by TEC of Japan2. Federal Express terminals were originally IBM 3270 displays3. Federal Express initially started the business by using passenger airlines4. Federal Express used passenger airlines to start International service5. Automation did not want Powership 3 to be a graphical based computer. (ie airbill showed as an image on the screen, vs table driven)6. When the SuperTrackers were completely re-engineered and manufactured(EST's), Ground Ops management would not approve a Laser scanner on the device for scanning.

Marcie Littles Moss2/16/2016

#1 was NEC; not TEC....I still have part of one of the original shipping crates they came in.

Deby Abbott Jolley2/16/2016

1 - False 2 - True 3 - False 4 - True 5 - False (Wasn't that the whole point?) 6 - True (my guesses)

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/18/2016

Answers 1. Zapmail machines were manufactured by TEC of Japan False: were manufactured by NEC (Nippon Electric Company) 2. Federal Express terminals were originally IBM 3270 displays False: Burroughs & Incoterm & teletype/teleprinters 3. Federal Express initially started the business by using passenger airlines False: First week was on Falcons, then a month on passenger airlines, as the network was redesigned; then back to Falcons 4. Federal Express used passenger airlines to start International service True: Air Canada 5. Automation did not want Powership 3 to be a graphical based computer. (ie airbill showed as an image on the screen, vs table driven) True: PS3 was for the front office, and required less packages to justify a free unit; CA didn't want the PS3 to be more sophisticated than PS2s, since the PS2 required more packages; they wanted the device to become more sophisticated as the number of packages required, went up. 6. When the SuperTrackers were completely re-engineered and manufactured(EST's), Ground Ops management would not approve a Laser scanner on the device for scanning. True: DGO wanted a laser but wouldn't justify it based on productivity; mgmt would accept it if the laser was put on the tip end, but that would have required all new quadracks in the field; FWS made the decision to go forward and add the $120 Laser scanner. UPS had already deployed laser scanning on the DIAD.

Deby Abbott Jolley2/18/2016

5 - But PS3 was so cute!!

Ben Moore2/22/2016

a. Burroughs b. Wang c. PROFS d. ? e. lottery of employees' children's names f. ?

Buddy Johnson2/22/2016

D. Silver spoon

David Butler2/23/2016

e. employees children's names

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/25/2016

Answers...best I can remember a. name the manufacturer of FedEx's first computer Burroughs (now part of Unisys) b. name Federal Express' first word processing system Wang and Jacquard; Wang won out, when Jacquard couldn't support 3270 IBM emulation on the same device. c. name Federal Express' first email or messaging system something called Y Message, followed by Profs, then EMC2 d. what did Federal Express once give to your first born child? silver spoon was the correct answer e. where did names for Federal Express aircraft come from? Employees childrens names was the correct answer; first jet was named after FWS' daughter Wendy f. why did the IBM Series/1 Not become the mini computer for Dads and station processing? Jim Barksdale was pro IBM, having worked there and wanted a computer system that could support applications and 3270 screens(IBM display support), so the Series/1 was analyzed to replace the DEC. DADS was developed on a PDP-11/34 DEC computer, and cost of that mini computer and disks were around $30K+; to run the same application on a Series/1 computer was $120,000....so the Series/1 wasn't feasible. Additionally Jim Bentley continued to get volume discounts on the DEC computers continually reducing the price, and Jim Moore kept pushing to get the size of computer down from the size of two small refrigerators, to a box that could be shipped overnight to replace any failed units.

Peter Dangerfield2/25/2016

Still waiting for my sons silver spoon? 😢

Chris Apalodimas2/27/2016

c. Not really email, but after IMS was installed, the Field used to use something called Message Switching that utilized some very basic functionality within IMS where stations communicated with each other. (Mostly used to track lost/mis-directed packages and such). Jere Bledsoe might chime in 'cause I think his group managed the software. d. Used to get a $50 savings bond.

Subject: Question?

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/28/2016

Question?I remember seeing some comments about some that took the fedex buyout, and received a sum of money that might have affected their medicare part B premium...it put them in a higher tax bracket ...and someone said you could get an exception on thisjust checking on any info on this.... have a friend who will be retiring this year, from another company, who was deciding whether to take a cash out of their pension or an annuity of many years...they are eligible for medicare soon after their retirement

Gary Phillips2/28/2016

Mine was affected buy the buyout. My medicare payment doubled. You have to take proof of a life changing even to Social Security to get the rate lowered. A company reorganization like the buyout, a divorce, marriage, etc qualifies. They base your medicare payment on a previous year return. Mine was based on 2013 which increased dramatically because of the buyout. So, it's good to have a different year return with you as well.

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/28/2016

Gary, were you able to get it lowered?

Gary Phillips2/28/2016

Yes, i filled out a form with the info and I received a letter with the lower rate about 2 weeks later.

Dan Elliot2/28/2016

Do you remember what form it was?

Gary Phillips2/28/2016

They gave it to me at the SS office. I filled it out there.

Gary Phillips2/28/2016

If you're in Memphis, I suggest going to the Olive Branch SS office. Much less hectic than Memphis. Also try to go in the middle of the week........Tuesday thru Thursday.

Buddy Johnson2/29/2016

Dr Ponder selected a team of seasoned employees knowledgable in the operational states for Line Haul. These were sent to several of the key cities during this integration. Cities included Chicago, LAX, Miami, Anchorage, JFK, and Newark. I was assigned the lovely Newark facility!!! Because of the great work done across the IT world, the first few days came of with very few issues.

FedEx TriviaWhat were the differences between the Zapmailer I and Zapmailer 2 machines?

Ben Moore2/29/2016

Leased circuits?

Eddie Garrison2/29/2016

One was in stations or "closet" and other at customer offices

Chris Apalodimas2/29/2016

I was in the dropbox group in the old DGO when Zapmail launched. I believe Zapmail was launched with about 980+/- zap machines around the country. One zap machine per zip code, a system constrating (due to COSMOS dispatching I think). This did create a bit of a problem with high density zips like NYC. I know we had one Zap machine placed in Dr. Ponder's old hometown, or something like that!?! Our group was tasked with finding 'easy' access locations for the Zap 1 machines; places like small closet sized offices in office complexes, unused hotel rooms and the like. The reason was that our group was skilled in negotiating the placement of drop boxes and this was similar enough to their regular work. So, at a number of sites FedEs rented an unused hotel room for Zap machines. Needless to say as time went on, we did hear stories of couriers taking breaks at the hotel, using the swimming pool and other amenities. .. Gary Roth was a Sr. Manager in marketing at the time. I remember talking with him and and how exasperated he was coming up with five year projections on a nearly daily basis as we neared launch. Apparently, the powers that be kept 'tweaking' the 'assumptions' to come up with the volume/revenue numbers they wanted. Prior to the launch of Zapmail was a great time for FedEx, we were making money, we were innovating, and doing a lot of fun stuff, at least technology-wise. ..
