Interesting Tidbit:An employee at the St.Louis station heard that FedEx was starting to look at a replacement device for the SuperTracker(around the mid 90's). He spent his own money and produced a mockup of what he thought the new device should look like(a Klingon Phaser) and he also produced a video explaining his ideas. The new device would have laser scanning, voice input, so no keyboard needed and an array of many futuristic technologies that could go into his wooden model. He did a great job, and was thanked for his efforts but at the time, none of his ideas could be incorporated, and laser scanning was already on the plate. He was thanked for his efforts.

Article: Commercial Appeal http://wreg.com/2013/05/31/last-day-on-the-job-fedex-employees-accept-buyout-package/I heard comments, that at some of the joint going away parties, management wasn't allowed to announce names of people leaving/retiring, due to some legal issue

Deby Abbott Jolley6/17/2013

I was asked for permission to share that I was taking the buyout - which I granted. Some of the going away parties were pretty lame, but mine and my co-worker's was a ton of fun! We had the Will Tucker Band (Laurie Tucker's son) play for ours! (I paid for the band, which was totally worth it!) http://goo.gl/XoLiW

I wanted to say good buy to people I have worked with over the last 35 years and most of the retirement partie i press were behind closed doors with only immediate co-workers invited.

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/18/2013

FedEx had various commercials that were never used. One was of spaceships (fedex, rps, ups etc) battling in outer space. Another one was supposedly with some of the Star Trek actors in a Zapmail commercial, but it was shut down before airing. One of my favorite. UPS had started their overnite air service using Birmingham as the air hub. Birmingham had heavy fog for 3 days, and the UPS fleet couldn't get in or out of Birmingham, thus delaying their service. The commercial showed an airport with heavy fog with other couriers bumping around in the fog who could not find their customers or packages. Then out from the fog jumps up a FedEx courier with his package, and announces 'FedEx'......an obvious dig that FedEx's hub was open for business.

FedEx Trivia Quiz:Around 1973, the Capital groups that backed Federal Express determined that someone older than FWS(then 29) was needed to front the company, especially to raise money. They went around FWS and the management group & hired a person who served as President of FedEx for a short while.Who was this person?

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/18/2013

Correct Answer from John Schwarzmann: General Estes was named Chairman and chief executive officer

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/18/2013

from Scott Harris: Wasn’t he the guy that had the reserved parking space in front of the admin building, and the day Fred got rid of him, he went down and pulled the reserved sign out of the ground?

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/18/2013

from Jim Moore: Yep, that was he

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/18/2013

I also read that the first order of business at FedEx(and maybe only thing he did) was to spend maybe $25K or more remodelling his office and installing a personal bathroom.

FedEx Trivia Question: who was the first InfoSystems employee hired into FedEx?

Amy Armstrong6/20/2013

Oh, that's a good one. I want to know the answer. Jim Barksdale is my guess.

Geana Allen6/20/2013

Sounds like a great answer to me . Also congratulations on retiring

Buddy Johnson6/20/2013

Dale Brewington, I believe.........

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/20/2013

Answer(I think): In Little Rock, around 1972, Roger Frock hired Leon Tyree who he had worked with on a project for Jones Truck Line in Pennsylvania. Leon hired Wes Terry. They leased a Burroughs 2700 and the first application was a program to track Falcon maintenance schedules. The second program was a rudimentary billing application. In Memphis hired were: Chuck Graham, Larry Brock, Jere Bledsoe, Bill Stuart, Colen Kelly Steward, Don Rose and Jimmy Fuller. Larry & Jimmy left a few months after Chuck Graham was hired.

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/20/2013

Jim Barksdale came to FedEx sometimes after the Cook IT acquisition. He was President of one of Cook's subsidiaries. Charlie Brandon had decided he didn't want to run a large IT shop and JimB was the replacement for him. Data Systems at the time was about 220 people including the staff in COS.

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/20/2013

Mr. Barksdale came in 1979.

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/20/2013

re: Tom Bullion hired in 1973: I then helped Wes Terry break the revenue functions out of data processing and started the Billing System. This is where I met my lifelong friend Tom McNeal. He was hired as the Credit & Collections manager. We fought like tigers and became best of friends.

Buddy Johnson6/20/2013

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/21/2013

In 1973 FedEx searches for a firm to create a logo for the new company. The minimum is $100K from New York firms. Rick Runyon from LA, flew a Cessna 310 to Little Rock to meet with FWS and offered to do a logo for $25K, and will only charge for it, if Federal picks his design. FWS accepted his offer.

Jack Brown6/21/2013

Jack Brown6/22/2013

I remember being told the reason for going from "Federal Express" to "FedEx" was because customers were referring to the company by FedEx. I remember someone who was a new hire saying it was the first company that he knew of where the name had become a verb, I.e. "I'll FedEx it".

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/24/2013

FWS makes Profit from RobberyRoger Frock tells this story from his book "Changing How the World Does Business" that happened at the Little Rock facility before the Memphis startup."One Monday morning, I learned of some unusual excitement the previous Saturday. While the staff was busy working, a masked gunman entered the facility, ordered everybody into one office, and demanded all their money. Fred, never one to carry cash, had only a dime in his pocket. He turned this over to the nervous robber while trying to calm him, concerned that his revolver might accidentally discharge. Everyone else emptied their pockets, but the gunman, apparently unaccustomed to his weekend career, was shaking so badly that he dropped some change on the floor. A quarter rolled toward Fred as the robber fled the scene.Fred calmed the others and promised to reimburse their lost funds. Then he picked up and pocketed the quarter, thereby making a profit of fifteen cents. I felt if he could make a profit from a robbery, we somehow were destined to make the company a success."

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/24/2013

I've heard several stories of people travelling with Mr. Smith to stations and ramps...and he wouldn't have any cash with him...whomever was with him would cover any lunch or whatever was needed.

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/24/2013

Dog Story...true but a long time ago.A lady FedEx employee told me this story that happened probably in the early 90's.She lived in a subdivision with her spouse and kids close to the Ridgeway area.It was summer and very hot and the kids found an older dog outside. She had the kids bring the dog inside to be in the air conditioning and they gave the dog water. The dog tag had a phone number on it, and she called and told the owner that their dog was at their house, and to come get their dog...the owner said, 'I'll be right over'Well, the dog drank the water, then used the bathroom on her floor. She screamed and said, 'get that dog out of the house, put him in the back yard....'A short time later, an older station wagon drives up and she sees who the owner is...She screams....'get that dog back in the house in the air conditioning!!!'..as Mr Smith came up the driveway to get his dog.....

FedEx Trivia Quiz: Around 1991, Federal Express had some issues with taxes in Memphis and especially a Payroll tax that Memphis was considering levying on anyone who worked in Memphis. They briefly looked at moving Memphis Operations & the SuperHub out of the city. What was the name of the city they looked at relocating to? What was the name of the military airbase?

Mike Farrah6/26/2013

That was just before I came on board (as I was still in the Navy in '91). I think it was Blytheville, AR & Blytheville (Eaker) Air Force Base. My coffee pot chatter recollection close?

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/26/2013

Very Close...the correct answer. If my numbers are correct, it was going to cost $1B to rebuild a SuperHub in Blytheville plus there wasn't as big a pool of college kids to man the growing hub.

Mike Farrah6/26/2013

They should have looked at Jonesboro as it boomed and continues to do so. Of course, I would never have met your cute secretary in the corner office...so I 'm glad the deal fell through

I worked for Everett in Telecom many years ago. You always felt the cold hand of death grip your heart when he would call you up and say, "Ah...could you step around to my office?" It was never a good thing. Lol... Or, maybe it's just that it was never good for ME! Lol...

Who was the young FedEX programmer who wrote the initial programs for Wang, then went to work for Wang, and later returned to FedEx? JLB wanted to promote the young programmer to keep him, but there were so many programmers with more experience that he decided he couldn't leapfrog those older programmers. Chuck Jowers was a sr mgr but I think he only worked with a small group on the Flying Tigers prkject. I don't think he was officially a part kf nrtwok eng.

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/3/2013

Roy Beard was the 2nd Senior Manager. And Chuck was a mgr in Telecom reporting to the first sr. mgr of network engr.

Marie McVay7/3/2013

Randy Roy and Roy Beard...

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/3/2013

from Jill Bradbury: In reply to the trivia question, I worked for Terry Cox in (Data) Network Engineering in'84-85, & Antony Kong came over from Ops Research (under Joe Hinson) in'85 to become our Sr Mgr. That was during the time we were housed in the double-wide trailer behind 2955 Republican (good times, especially if you had the desk closest to the restrooms, the day then men's room, um, 'flooded', shall we say). Antony went over to Satellite Systems (Zapmail) to work for Gil Mook in late '85 & several of us followed.

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/3/2013

Answer: John Schwarzmann was the first Senior Manager of Network Engineering. Reporting to him were(I think) managers: Gary Ragsdale, Jim Moore, Ancel Hankins & Chuck Jowers. I think the second Sr. Mgr was Roy Beard, but forgot about Antony coming over. It seems like when Winn Stephenson was made MD over Telecom, he reorganized and made Roy Sr Mgr of Engineering, and Randy Roy the Sr. Mgr over Network OPs...but my memory clouds with each passing year......
