This past week a FedEx tradition was once again celebrated.... 10-4 Day hosted by the Radio Group. I couldn't attend, was keeping two grandchildren for a couple days due to their mother's surgery. Hope that all had a great time.Thought I would post a memory. This photo was taken for a Corporate article of some of the people still at FedEx that played a part in initially birthing DADS, which grew to a large nationwide private radio and terminal network. Over 386 locations, 42,000 + computer terminals in the vans, and over 5 million transactions a day, and also enabling the first real time posting of delivery scans for customers do know where their packages were.Shown is JJ Woods, Richard Dunn, Jim Bentley and myself. Jim Moore had already departed FedEx to start his own company...Nathan Lemmon and others should have been in the photo, but they pulled the article together quickly and didn't go out searching for everyone.

This was always a great photo...

It was a great night. Bravo Zulu to those that made it happen. What an amazing and talented group of people.

FedEx TriviaDave Bronczek will be the new COO of FDX. He is an extremely nice person. I was on the committee a couple times reviewing GFT's that had come to FWS level of review. He was compassionate and very fair in his evaluations of people. What was Dave's first position at FedEx?

Elizabeth Ward Blaylock10/11/2016

Courier

Buddy Johnson10/11/2016

And, wasn't it a Part-time job??

Bob Baxter10/12/2016

Many of you remember Ernie Ohle in I.T. My recollection is that Ernie started as a courier working for Dave Bronczek in Cleveland. Ernie moved to Memphis, working with us as a programmer/analyst at Sprankel Avenue. Buddy, is your recollection the same?

Hector Vazquez10/11/2016

Agreed. Meet him here in Orlando at an Officers and Directors meeting years ago. Seemed liked a very decent guy. Easy to talk to.

Liz Ciulla Carrozza10/12/2016

A fairy tale story with a happy ending. Courier to COO! Wow!

Terry Walker Smedley10/11/2016

Did I miss an email? Last one I saw from Fred said he was going to be COO.

Jimmy I came across this FDX 737 brochure. Not many folks would have seen our small fleet I think there were five.

Jim Bentley10/11/2016

And even fewer ever jump seated on them! I was a lucky one..

Peter Dangerfield10/11/2016

I didn't Jim, missed that ride. Was it in cargo or pax configuration?

Jim Bentley10/11/2016

It was cargo. We flew from Mem to Indy(I think). On takeoff the Captains seat slipped and it came straight back and pinned my feet. He was short and the seat was all the way forward. Once that happened he could not get the seat back and the right seat had to take over the takeoff. It happened as soon as he rotated. I will never forget, my feet and ankles were really bruised, and it took until we leveled off till he could get the seat back forward.

Peter Dangerfield10/11/2016

WOW Jim what a ride glad it didn't break your foot.

Bob Baxter10/12/2016

I didn't have Jim's painful experience, but I clearly remember jumpseating into Orlando on a 737 IN THE FOG! We were about 50 feet above the ground when the runway suddenly appeared in front of us. It was so foggy that when I walked out to the street side of the FedEx facility, I couldn't figure out where the street was, and then nearly got run over by the Hertz bus. That was the night I developed great respect for FedEx pilots and realized that they earn every penny they are paid.

David Warren10/13/2016

What's up Pete.....

Peter Dangerfield10/13/2016

Hi David I'm retired and loving it. How about you?

Ditto Pete. Good times.

From Karen Sandiford Roberson. Many of us used to fly on the corporate jet with him as pilot:I wanted to share with my Mid South friends and family that my father passed away this evening. A second service will be held next week at Fort Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, FL, where he will receive a full military funeral. Aww, man. I worked with Buddy for years and flew right seat with him many times. He was a skilled aviator and I still repeat my favorite quote of his about how much fuel one should have on board an aircraft and I quote, "The only time You can have too much fuel onboard is when she's on fire!!" Rest In Peace, Buddy!!

Karen Sandiford Roberson10/14/2016

Thank you for sharing this post and for your thoughts and prayers. My dad was definitely one of a kind!

DHJ! JERK extraordinaire!

Carl Wayne Hardeman10/16/2016

Several of us, The TPC, were at Santa Teresa when the IBM IMS team told DHJ and us they would no longer enhance IMS as the customer base was too small. IBM also said they would make clusters of servers rather than ever larger mainframes. SUN and HP were telling us much the same thing. Turned out not to be so but that was best external technical advice we could get. Even Gartner predicted only DB2 and Oracle would survive as DBMS's. So DHJ made the technical decision to move in the Unix/C/Sybase direction. If anything he should be faulted only for his poor bedside manner and lack of close personal interaction with the internal technology experts, mainly since they were adamantly opposed.

Linda Cook Thorn10/16/2016

You said it perfectly, Carl hope you and family are doing great!

Does anyone have a phone number of someone in Corporate that can help me with a Cigna issue. The number in the benefit book is a contractor who was no help at all. The service level at Cigna has gone done the toilet.

Tommy Shelton10/21/2016

Richard, try contacting Vickie Gratton at 870-704-5265 or Vickie.gratton@fedex.com. She is an HR Advisor for Benefits Planning & Management. She attended last years 2016 Pre-65 Retiree Health seminar and gave me her business card. Told me to contact her if we had problems with Cigna. Hope this helps.

Richard Maingault11/5/2016

I called Vickie and she never returned my call. This is the biggest problem I have in working with anyone. I have learned to expect my calls to not be returned. Service in this country does not exist any longer.

Subject: FedEx Trivia/Philosophical question:

Jimmy Glenn Burk10/24/2016

FedEx Trivia/Philosophical question:a. In the early 80's, why did FedEx abandon the Operating System that COSMOS was developed on (ACP/TPF) and retrain all the COS programmers to COBOL and move to IBM's IMS operating system?b. In the mid 90's, why did FedEx move most new applications to a Unix/C platform instead of putting new applications on the IBM mainframes?

Ben Moore10/24/2016

a. ACP programmers were too expensive. Nobody told Flying Tiger that though. b. Because of Dennis Jones.

Carl Wayne Hardeman10/25/2016

There were very few of us Assembler Language ACP/PARS programmers.

Akita Hank10/26/2016

A. In addition, transaction rates did not grow to the volume expected that would have required ACP, and IMS was improved to handle higher transaction rates. I believe availability of assembler language programmers \, and the longer lead times for development are as much or more reason than the expense.

Jimmy Glenn Burk10/25/2016

I did a quick look up and it seems to be an Adware pop-up scam. You may need to run something like Malearebytes, which is free to clean it out. You can maybe use the task manager to end the browser task, if you haven't done that already.

I was able to exit out of it as soon as I saw the pop-up message. I ran a scan on all files with McAfee and it found the maleware file and deleted it.

Food for thought. I am just recovering from colorectal cancer, which has been a painful 2 year journey. I'm looking at quarterly CT scans for the next few years. As expensive as it is, I've had excellent medical care thanks to our insurance. As high as it is, it's been there when I needed it the most. You never know if/when you'll need it.

Jane Meredith Robbins11/2/2016

And if you think premium costs are high, surgeons and hospital charges are out of control! Cigna works discount deals within the network and the providers have to write off a whole lot! This saves you too. Wouldn't want to be out there on my own!
