Jim Barksdale Quotes:

Jim Barksdale was well known for his southern quotes to summarize anything. Here are few, please forward ones you remember

That dog don't hunt….

Nothing is a Plan unless You write it down…

You folks are like the pig at a ham and egg breakfast. You are committed.

You've Got to make the Main Thing, the Main Thing…

It's the Icing that sells the cake

You can't Manage what you can't Measure

I think they should separate Microsoft's application group from its operating system group.

In my column series "The Main Thing," I often talk about how Internet technology can improve the way people communicate - both within a business and between a business and its customers and partners.

Of course, nothing happens until somebody sells something.

Take our own company as an example: We're living proof, we jump with our own parachutes.

That's the ultimate gratification in any business situation - do customers buy the product? And do they use it and do they come back and buy more of it?

There are no pat answers - we're pushing through some new frontiers, and lessons of the past don't always apply.

We've tapped into a huge demand, and it's up to us to fulfill that demand and to be creative doing it.

Where we can compete on merit, we do very well.

If you spend a dollar of the company's money.....act as if it was your dollar...

Gartner Conference
At a Gartner conference, on Tuesday Bill Gates is the featured interviewee. There are 6000 people attending. He stated, "we believe that internet browsers should be free" (Gates said this because Netscape owned the browser market at that time, which sold for around $20; to gain market share, Microsoft was giving the Internet Explorer browser away for free...)

The next day, Jim Barksdale President of Netscape(selling the Netscape browser) is the interviewee and he is asked what he thought of Bill's comments. JLB, paused and looked serious, and said, "Well…… I've thought a lot about what young Bill said yesterday….and after studying the issue…..  we believe Operating Systems should be free"; and this  brought the house down with tremendous applause…..
