Where's The Package???
Before DADS; customers would talk to an agent and give info that the package is ready NOW, even if it would be a couple hours later that they would package the shipment. It took 1-2 hours for the FedEx courier to arrive.
In one instance, after DADS was installed in Chicago, a customer called for a dispatch and said "The Package is ready NOW", even though it wasn't packaged, then stayed on the line with the call center to order supplies.
While on the phone line, the courier walks in 30 seconds later and said..."FedEX...Where's the Package?" which certainly shocked the customer.
Turns out the courier had just delivered a package in the complex, went back to the truck and the DADS terminal showed a pickup was requested at same address...and he just walked in with the Customer still talking to FedEx.

Remembering Chuck:
Chuck Sertich was the Director for LineHaul Systems. I first met him in 1995. He was totally dedicated to his staff and to FedEx and his family. He was one of the nicest people you could every meet and always had a good attitude even when facing adversity. He passed away last year, and is still missed by his friends.

Jim, is JJ still trolling around Columbia TN? and do you know where Buddy Williamson is?
Jim Bentley1/24/2013
JJ is still in that area, but goes to South Padre Island in his motorhome for the winter. I dont know where Buddy is residing..

Jimmy Glenn Burk1/25/2013

Sammie Helton Butts1/25/2013
Where did Richard Dunn land? His son and my son attended high school together and we shared some parental miseries, as I recall. Hope he's doing well. Four very sharp men in this picture.
Jimmy Glenn Burk1/25/2013
Jim Moore relied on Richards skills to develop and make the radio network successful; I think he moved to Oakland to live on a golf course, but am pretty sure he now lives in Lakeland TN

Note....Gary Holmes is the only humanoid Not wearing a tie. Ties and coats were required in that era. (When Gary interviewed with Jim Moore...he didn't own a suit or tie...he wore his Dads suit). One day Gary got a call from Ron Ponder who was the CIO of the company. He said hi to Gary and asked him if he was having a good day. Gary exclaimed...'well...yea...'; Ron said, 'could I ask you for a favor' to which Gary replied 'sure'...Ron said...do you think you could find a tie...and at least wear it to my meetings?" Gary said sure.....and he went and found a tie...just in case he ever went to a Ron Ponder meeting again....

http://www.inspirationalstories.com/quotes/t/jim-barksdale/Two of the first things I learned from Jim BarksdaleIf you bring me an idea...write it down:
"If something is worth doing or talking about,,,it should be worth at least writing it down on a piece of paper"Spelling: Jim Barksdale was a stickler for proper spelling...he sent my memos back to me with spelling corrected .....so I had to proof read everything for spelling...this was before PC's or spell checkersI can't remember the person's name, but he hired someone who had been an English major to get managers to spell and write correctly....He also used same lady to start composing 'The Manager's Guide' when he found none existed in FedEx.T

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/9/2013
Memory: The Flight that was not meant to beFWS liked buying airplanes. He was always looking for new aircraft for the fleet and to change out Corporate aircraft. We had several Corp jets in the early 80's and the company bought an extremely fast turboprop aircraft that carried about 30 people.I was on this new corporate aircraft on it's inaugural trip to Colorado Springs. I sat next to Jim Barksdale on the flight. I had been working on several research projects for him. It was usually a 2 hour trip to COS depending on the wind, sometimes longer. This trip took 5 1/2 hours.... we probably had a 150+ mph headwind. Also, there wasn't a bathroom on this aircraft. We landed and piled off the aircraft quickly. Jim Barksdale looked at me and said, we will fly back on it....but this airplane will never fly to COS again..... and it didn't, in fact the company got rid of it that year.

You can't Manage what you can't Measure ...Jim BarksdaleFor us, who have worked at FedEx, measuring delivery performance, scan performance, and SQI(an index of about 10 measurements) to see how the company is performing, was in our lives, throughout our careers. It is hard to imagine a FedEx without knowing our service levels.I attended a presentation around 2005 with an MIT based group called Vanguard. A person who had worked for WebVan spoke about their demise around 2001. They actually bought HomeGrocer.com in 2000 when Mary Alice Taylor was the CEO.Their claim to fame was they averaged spending $1M a day for 1000 days as they ramped up a 30 minute delivery service for groceries. They eventually hired two IE people who had worked for FedEx who introduced them to the concept of measuring how they were performing. The results were enlightening but also spelled doom for the company. WebVan was amazed at how badly they were doing, but also in the forecast from the numbers, that they could never make money. They went out of business. Many in FedEx IT worked on systems that measured evertything, and that became a big part of FedEx's success and culture.
