Trivia Question: The World Tech Center in Collierville has 8+ buildings named Building 10,20,30...etc What were the buildings going to be named after...before Dennis Jones squelched the idea?
Jimmy Glenn Burk2/19/2013
Answer: Was going to be named after Mountains...but too much time was spent on determining which building was which mountain that DHJ shut down the conversations and negotiations...and said 10,20,30,40 etc....

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/19/2013
Day in Life of FedExThis is always an interesting video to watch, a day in the life of fedex flights.
http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=fedex+network&view=detail&mid=4EE37AC4EB5C3618CAA94EE37AC4EB5C3618CAA9&first=0&FORM=NVPFVRI was always impressed with the LineHaul process to build the flight and trucking schedules.Operations Research runs models for a future month. The output of these models is One day of package shipping for all products giving a forecast of package shipping from every zip code to every other zip code.LineHaul and GOCC specialists run dozens of applications to extrapolate that one day into shipping for the next three months, taking into account holidays, past shipping volumes etc.The end result is URSA the routing that goes into all sorting devices, flight schedules, trucking schedules, Pilot bids, etcA complicated system that has worked well due to the expertise of all the programmers, ops research analysts, LineHaul and planners who developed these systems.

Trivia Question: After the initial SuperHub was built it couldn't be expanded due to what? To expand across the airport property this had to be taken care of??
Carl Wayne Hardeman2/19/2013
Ang base
Jimmy Glenn Burk2/19/2013
a good answer but incorrect(ang Air National Guard)
Carl Wayne Hardeman2/19/2013
Ang base or rway 21
Jimmy Glenn Burk2/19/2013
Before the SuperHub was built they had to have property where the air national guard had a 500 year lease, and the head officer said no way fedex would get that property. TN congressman intervened and FedEx got the property they wanted and FedEx provided funds to relocate much of the Nat Guard. After the initial SuperHub was built, to expand they had to fill in a creek, and build over it to be able to expand.

Wade Waldrup2/20/2013
During the early days of the Motorola Powerpad development effort, Winn wanted to test the Pad and the ASTRA+ printer in a high altitude, cold temperature environment. So in Feb, 2004, off I went to COS and Pikes Peak. The road up the mountain was closed for the season, so after explaining my mission to the park officials, I was escorted by a Ranger lieutenant up to about 11,500 feet where I spent a couple of hours scanning and printing in a snowstorm. Definitely, one of my more interesting tasks for FedEx!
Ezra Fried2/21/2013
I loved the story ,its too bad we couldnt test them under wate. We lost quite a number of them during Sandy.

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/22/2013
SuperTrackerI received an email from Jim De Arras who was one of the co-developers at HHP who developed the original SuperTracker. He will hopefully provide future info on it's history. He did send this tidbit if info:"How we got the contract is interesting. HP whom we had been working with, did not want to respond to the RFP, and gave us their place. The company in the best position to get the contract (I'll remember the name) sent their response in by Burlington Northern, a Fedex competitor at the time. Harry Dalton (I believe) took the unopened envelope and dropped it into a FedEx envelope and returned it. We were anxious and flexible, so we won. "

Story forwarded from FedExLegends Yahoo Group Page from Ancel Hankins:In the late 70s, early 80s, as we were planning and developing COSMOS, we were holding periodic meetings between MEM and COS personnel, alternating between the locations. One winter day Charlie Brandon, Bob Kramer, Larry Lake, Kathy Crockett, John Schwarzmann and I were on the Lear going to COS for the meeting. A major blizzard had been raging in the area all night and during the day. It was expected the storm would quit and runways would be cleared by the time we arrived. Well, it didn't and they weren't, so we diverted to Santa Fe, NM to wait it out. We had a nice lunch, enjoyed a stroll in the warm sunshine and just killed time for a couple of hours. By the middle of the afternoon, they decided conditions were not going to be favorable for getting into COS that day, so we returned to Memphis. That was known as the day we took the Lear to Santa Fe for lunch.

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/4/2013
Ancient terminal trivia quiz: in the 1970's FedEx evolved from batch processing on a Burroughs 3500, to terminals and controllers running an old airline protocol on Burroughs 6700 mainframes. When FedEx bought Cook's IBM systems we converted to a Bisync 3270 protocol. The company was going to buy IBM 3270 controllers, but the company that had been supplying terminals asked for a chance to reprogram their controllers to work with IBM.What was the name of the company and name of the terminal controller?history: this company'requested this because they had been lenient to FedEx on paying for the terminals; it took years for FedEx to pay for them, and were somewhat using them for free; so the company allowed them to do the conversion, which worked. all of this happened 3-4 years before the first PC was built.

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/6/2013
from Mary Alice Taylor:
This morning around 11:00am, FEDEX lost an old friend, John Crider. John worked for Tandem and was a key player during the ZapMail era. John and his wife, Kathy, moved from Memphis to Daphne, AL about 5 years ago. John had no known health issues--no medications whatsoever! He was 69 years young; married 47 years; and loved his three children and grandchildren. He suffered a major heart attack this morning and joined the angels watching over all of us.. John and Kathy are wonderful friends....John will be missed!
Jimmy Glenn Burk3/6/2013
I knew John thru the 1980's and always enjoyed working with him. Friendly guy and happy personality.
Jimmy Glenn Burk3/6/2013
from Ancel Hankins: John also supported Fedex in a sales capacity with Burroughs Corp. He worked with Fedex in obtaining their first large scale mainframe computer and subsequent upgrades. Burroughs was the only computer company willing to give the fledgling Fedex the flexibility needed to bridge between startup and profitability with a mid-size B3500 computer. They then upgraded to the large scale single processor B6700 which was later upgraded to dual processors. John was instrumental in working out the details for a successful deal between Fedex and Burroughs.

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/7/2013
Ancient trivia question: around 1981, ITD was pretty much exclusively mainframe based with some work starting on mini computers(Data General, DEC & Wang); with problems & needs at the SuperHub, Jim Barksdale formed a new group devoted to microprocessor applications for the hub, customer automation & other devices. What was that new group called and who came up with the name?
Gary Phillips3/7/2013
I remember the group but can't remember what it was called......wan't their center located at 2930 Democrat?
Jimmy Glenn Burk3/7/2013
The group was called Telematics, a name picked by Chuck Deiotte. Jim Barksdale promoted David John to MD, the managers were Chuck Deiotte, Herman Derbort & Jim Candler.
Gary Phillips3/7/2013
I may be thinking about a different support group.
Jimmy Glenn Burk3/7/2013
I think one group was called Micro Support, the other Concepts Research and the other was a Wang support group under Telematics

Trivia Question:
When Jim Barksdale came over from Cook, ITD (Information & Telecommunications Division) was then known as Data Systems. We had the basic holidays plus we got our birthday off. Every quarter there was a Data Systems group meeting(about 200 people in Memphis) where JLB spoke(actually in several group meetings on top floor of Clark Tower)There weren't any scan compliance reports or online computations statistics for COSMOS at that time.We were granted a free day off, of our choosing, for the next month IF what event transpired during the Quarter?
Jimmy Glenn Burk3/9/2013
We got an extra day off if the weekly mainframe availability was 98% or higher over the course of a quarter.
