Chris Apalodimas3/25/2014

Wade Waldrup3/25/2014

No-tie Gary Holmes. God Bless him.

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/25/2014

Gary Holmes was noted for working very fast, when he worked, and talking with friends much of the time; His work output was still good, his speed could make up for his talkative-ness. Gary was working on an application for Powership. Back then, it would take 30 minutes to compile his program. So he started his compile and spent 30 minutes somewhere, talking to anyone he could find. He didn't think of this as slouching off...he was waiting for his program to be compiled so he could test changes. But Alas, technology caught up with him. He received a newer and faster PC. It took only 10 minutes to compile the same program...so he could only talk 10 minutes before he had to go back to work. So his complaint, verbally made to everyone, including management, was that technology was cutting into his talking time.... note: Gary is still in a semi-comatose state from the bicycle accident two years ago, where an angry driver plowed into a group of bikers in California, injuring two of the bicyclists. He was moved to West Memphis Ark, last year to make it easier for his family to care for him.

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/25/2014

Late 80's...small request from the CIO Gary Holmes attends an all group meeting where Dr. Ron Ponder the CIO spoke. An hour after that meeting, Gary gets a personal phone call from Dr. Ponder...which went something like this.... Dr. Ponder: Gary...this is Ron Ponder...how are you doing? Gary: Hi, pretty good... Dr. Ponder: Are you feeling ok...is work going ok, do you have what you need?? Gary: Yes...thank you Dr. Ponder: Do you think you might possibly.... find a tie...and wear it...anytime you come to a meeting where I am at??? Gary: Well, sure...I can do that... Dr. Ponder: Thank you, and You have a nice day....

DCC also had a division called MCD with developed applications for Data General mini computers, and also had a division call Cylix which was sold to RCA. Wayne Cook of Cook Systems worked in the MCD division.

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/28/2014

FedEx Trivia Quiz 3/28/14I began working in LineHaul around 1995 and was amazed at the number of applications and support the group provided. 586 different applications out of 1180 in the Corporation at the time.I had to attend WAR every friday morning, and occasionally FedEx's weathermen would make presentations on worldwide weather for the coming seasons. They talked just like weathermen on TV. We had four of them then.a. Why does FedEx have it's own meterologists on staff? b. Guess how many meteorologists are on staff today?

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/1/2014

a. Whenever the launch of flights happens, typically the forecast for the destination airport weather was done many hours before the flight, so it isn't as accurate as it can be, and sometimes you can't take off if the forecast is bad at the destination. If you have your own meteorologists, they can check/re-evaluate the conditions at the destination at launch and change the forecast if conditions permit. So having your own meteorologists can save you a lot of time and money. b. As of 2013, there were over 14 meteorologists on staff.

Angie Campbell Houston posed this Trivia Question:....if my memory serves, there was a contest to see what family had the most members working at FedEx, and the winning family was.....?

Jim Bentley4/1/2014

Jimmy Burk!

Marsha Terry Rider4/1/2014

I remember the contest and seeing the results on line. Wasn't it some family based in New Jersey?

Leroy Hebert4/1/2014

Don't know but I had my two sons at one time

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/2/2014

I don't have a way to fact check this, but if my memory serves, there was a contest to see what family had the most members working at FedEx, and the winning family included Vic Trouy, an ITD manager (who I think worked on development of the Super Tracker). Vic has since retired. (He has 15 children, 2 of his sons currently work in IT in Larry Netter's org, a 3rd took the first package and went back to school to be a dentist; 1 of his daughters worked in the Hub during college). Jimmy Glenn Burk4/8/2014

Followup question: What were the three switch companies that were looked at for the T-1 multiplexers and which one was chosen?

FedEx Poll: What was the first project at FedEx did you work on, or type support?and how long did you stay in your first job at FedEX, before changing to another department(either by choice or reorg)?

Marcie Littles Moss4/10/2014

First job at FedEx was working in Treasury/Credit as a Treasury Agent I (Nov '82-June '83). Then I started working for Jim Colson in the Gemini (later to be re-named ZapMail) project.

John Wilkinson4/12/2014

Hired into the AMBASSADOR Billing support group in 1986 as a programmer analyst and stayed a little less than three years before moving on to manage the International Accounts Receivable support group.

Gary Phillips4/10/2014

I was hired into Network Control in 1983. I worked with Dale Grear on the redesign and setup of the new nerwork control center for the comuter center move to the CTC in '84. Dale and I lived in module I for several months where we purchased and installed equipment, cables, etc. for the new control center. I stayed in Network Control for about a year and a half before accepting a position in Network Engineering where I was responsible for data communications and backup for the regional call centers.

Chris Jones4/10/2014

I started out typing on the Wang Word Processor in Hub Engineering in 1982. Stayed there around a year and then went to International Customer Service.

Deby Abbott Jolley4/10/2014

Subject: Some Ancient Telecom History

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/10/2014

Some Ancient Telecom HistoryI visited Ancel Hankins yesterday while he recovers, and spent some time rehashing Telecom history at FedEx.Around 1977, Ancel was working at DCC in Memphis, but did some contract work at FedEx. At that time there were only 2 people who worked in telecom. One was Vernitta Rogers. There was no real Network Control. All modems were mostly under the computer room floor. There were no patch panels, data scopes, or other test equipment. If something didn't work you called the phone company. Everything ran off the Burroughs mainframe.Ancel put together a plan and they purchased the above equipment and were then able to better diagnose if the network was working and where problems were.Jack Cochran was a manager and handled voice communications.Ancel was soon after hired as a manager of Data Engineering in 1977. Charlie Brandon hired Larry Lake as Sr. Mgr and he soon became a Director. FedEx then bought Cooks IT staff and Jim Barksdale took Charlie Brandons SVP position(when Charlie decided he didn't want to manage a large IT shop), and JLB then hired John Schwarzmann as Sr. Mgr over the following managers: voice(Gary Ragsdale), data(Ancel Hankins), radio(Jim Moore), admin(Susan Wright) and installations(Chuck Jowers). Larry Lake left in the early 80's which opened a Director slot which was filled by Winn Stephenson.
