Technical Trivia: Just before Ron Ponder left to go to Sprint as CIO/COO,, and the end of all Ponderamas ceased to exist....he made a Solomon like decision ..something like splitting the child to determine it's parents:FedEx was using 3 major computer vendors on projects for Unix computers...he decided to split future purchases between the field & Memphis. Who were the two favored computer vendors???

John Wilkinson3/11/2013

Was it Sun and IBM?

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/11/2013

Sun was one of the chosen ones, IBM was one of the three but not chosen. There is one more.

Gary Phillips3/11/2013

Certainly not Tandem?

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/11/2013

not tandem...although they did hang around quite a while for Intl customs apps and to concentrate Powership dial in calls

Charlie Derrick3/12/2013

Sun and HP

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/12/2013

Charlie is Correct! Sun for corporate because GOCC had a strong Sun presence and HP for the field, because we had just started changing all the DADS services from DEC to HP.

FedEx Trivia Question: Fred Smith and senior mgmt had tried to announce to employees any major decision before it hit the newswire in the 1980's. As the company grew it was harder and harder to get to all the locations. When the Zapmail shutdown was announced....there were probably 30 different locations in Memphis to visit. FWS announced we've got to do something about this.....What did FedEx implement???

Marcie Littles Moss3/12/2013

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/12/2013

Trivia Question: At the end of the 1980's FedEx had deployed over 40,000 DADS wireless terminals in FedEx trucks. The terminals were bought from a Canadian company called MDI. Motorola bought MDI, then later shut down production of the FedEx terminal, then told FedEx they had to buy at least 20,000 of the Motorola terminals the next year at 200% the cost of the MDI terminal...and this terminal had less functionality than what FedEx MDI terminal had. What did FedEx do?

Wade Waldrup3/12/2013

Designed our own?

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/12/2013

Wade is correct! Bruce Lindow's group had already designed the shell of a new Dads terminal, and had completed designing new electronics package. FedEx designed ,then manufactured with a company in Alabama, over 40,000 new terminals over the next few years to replace the about 20 year old Dads terminals. On deployment there were a few failures due to a modem board not being scored and but properly but after those were weeded out, it was very successful. FedEx would have bought the terminals from Motorola if they hadn't tried to price gouge FedEx and also set minimum limits of 20,000 units to purchase initially. Cost to manufacture was 1/5 the cost of buying Motorola devices.

Dan Elliot3/13/2013

Because Fred said so!

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/13/2013

from Winn Stephenson: Because we got sucked in by a clever vendor??

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/13/2013

answer is related to the FAA

Marcie Littles Moss3/13/2013

To help us communicate better with ground control?

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/14/2013

Answer: We did it because without doing it, all our Boeing 727s could have been grounded. The 727s were the bulk of the fleet, but by flying heavy freight vs passengers the design limits of the 727s were about maxed out. There was a certification program that modelled all components of an aircraft that would model all the stresses on all components. The FAA would approve the 727s to keep flying if we had that program modified to model every 727 and certify it. It relatively inexpensive investment to keep them in the air. FedEx always maintained aircraft to the highest extreme as started by Jim Riedmeyer. At the end of this year, all the 727's will be replaced.

.and interesting history notesaround 1981 Chuck Deiotte who worked in COS, and had worked at Boeing, reviewed COSMOS under ACP and recommended that they put a version of Unix on the mainframe and start writing in C; no one took that seriously at the timearound the early 1980's Jim Barksdale made the decision to rewrite COSMOS from IBM assembly language under ACP to COBOL under IMS FastPath so that software changes could be done faster , & IT could keep up with the business changes.around 1983 approx, Jim Moore contracted w GDI to rewrite the DADS software in C under DEC's RSX-11M and then transfer the application to COSaround 1985 I think it was Jim Schmideke(Sp) who was MD over Automation mktg? hired Chuck(who had his own micro business in COS) to train the Automation group in Lattice C & to rewrite the BASIC application which was then running then on NEC APC's.Around the end of the 80's Chuck's replacement, Herman Derbort put out a recommendation for everyone to start using Modula -2(pascal type language) on all micro and minicomputers; no one did that thoughand I guess the next big change after the SUN/HP/IBM projects under C, was the migration to JAVA in the 90's

If Fred called you to his office to discuss something, you can bet he’s already had conversations with the most notable person in the industry… 2. Speaking of offices: Fred’s was reasonably represented with relevant “stuff” not just stacked but relevant and handy for reference,,, However, Jim’s office was immaculate. If you had a meeting with him.. Sharon, remember Sharon, would come in place a folder in front of him, he’d open it, we’d have our discussion, then meeting over, folder closed Sharon takes it away and the next meeting begins…. I admired that style, and while not for everyone, me, I strive to keep my office clear of clutter and functional

10 Thing you did not Know about Fred Smith

1. Frederick Wallace Smith was born on Aug. 11, 1944, in Marks, Miss. Smith's father, for whom he was named, was a businessman—founder of the Dixie Greyhound Bus Line and the Toddle House restaurant chain. He died when the younger Smith was 4 years old, but left the family financially well off.

2. As a child, Smith had Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease, a birth defect that causes arthritis in the hips. He used crutches and leg braces when he was young but outgrew the condition by the age of 10, and by the time he was in high school, Smith was playing basketball and football.

3. Long interested in flying, Smith began piloting small planes when he was still a teenager.

4. While in high school, Smith and a group of friends started Ardent Records, a small recording studio, in a garage. Local rock and R&B acts began to record there, and after Smith left the company in 1962 to attend college, his friend, John Fry, expanded the business. Still in business today, Ardent became a nationally known studio where dozens of hit records by artists from Sam and Dave to the White Stripes have been recorded or mixed.

5. As an undergraduate at Yale University, Smith wrote a paper for an economics class in which he described a concept for overnight package delivery by air freight—very similar to what his company, FedEx, would later do. An often-repeated legend holds that his professor gave him a C for the paper, but Smith later admitted that he could not actually recall what grade he had received and had just guessed that it was his "usual gentlemanly C."

6. Smith was a member of the Skull and Bones secret society while at Yale. One of his closest friends in that group was John Kerry. Another Bonesman with whom Smith was acquainted was George W. Bush, who was also Smith's fraternity brother in Delta Kappa Epsilon. Years later, Smith said that because of his connections to the two men, he felt "kind of like the Forrest Gump of American politics."

7. After graduating from college in 1966, Smith enlisted in the Marine Corps and went to Vietnam as a second lieutenant. He served two tours of duty—one in the infantry and one as a pilot—and received a number of medals, including a Bronze Star, a Silver Star, and two Purple Hearts.

8. In 1971, Smith started the Federal Express Corp. He chose the name, in part, because he was hoping to get a contract transporting checks for the Federal Reserve system. He didn't get that contract but kept the name.

9. Smith played himself in the 2000 movie Cast Away, in which Tom Hanks played a FedEx employee who was stranded on an island.

10. An avid reader of history, Smith has said that he has learned more about business by studying history than from modern leadership books.

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/3/2013

Interesting Tidbit-Changes - Customer ServiceWhen FedEx originally began service, customers called a local phone number to dispatch a courier to pick up packages. The calls were answered at the local station. As volume grew, more employees were needed to answer the phone which became a nightmare to staff.Around 1979 FedEx started centralized call centers, and the local calls were routed to these major calls centers, which originally had 400-500 agents. The call center agents entered customer info into the COSMOS screens, which sent a dispatch message to that local station to dispatch the couriers. In 1980 the dispatch messages were sent directly to a DADS computer and forwarded over the radio links to the courier terminals in the vans. Later the local calls became 1-800-GOFEDEX instead of a local phone number. When I left FedEx in 2007 there were approximately 4,500 customer agents answering customer calls. There were distributed across 18 call centers in the U.S.By the end of 2013, these agents will be working from home using CISCO to route & manage the calls. About 90% are already working out of their homes.

My Clinton story:

At the Officer/Dir meeting in Orlando, Brett Bonner & I got Five Star Awards for the MSDS project. That night buses were going to take everyone & families on an hour drive to Cape Canaveral to watch the Shuttle take off around midnite. I think they had 7 or 8 buses. Ted Weise came to my room, congratulated me on my award and invited me to fly on the Corp jet with him to Cape Canaveral, instead of taking the bus. They had arranged to meet Hillary Clinton & the Women's U.S. Soccer team, who had just won the world championships I think. I found out the jet was only for employees and I had my wife with me, so I thanked him, declined and told him I would go with Stephanie...and thus preserve my marriage. He then found Brett and asked him.....Brett didn't hesitate...and went on the jet...where his wife went...I know not The shuttle didn't launch due to a bad sensor that night...but Brett received an autographed 8x10 photo of himself & Hillary to proudly display. It was a simple choice for me....Hillary or the wife

Occasionally FWS would address me as Dr. Burk...I never knew why,,, it might have been because I was an assoc professor at CBU for professional studies for a couple years. I one meeting just after Ted Weise had been promoted to President of Federal Express, FWS addressed me this way. Mr. Weise had his admin...call my admin to make sure he formally copied me on memos correctly, and wanted to know how I wanted to be addressed personally in meetings...he wanted to make sure he did the right thing. My admin who was as professional as any person at FedEX said: 'He likes to be called Jimmy'
