FedEx Retiree Poll I have a retiree tips, benefits & discount page that probably needs to be updated. If you have tips, lessons learned or fedex benefits that we have that aren't listed, post them here and I'll add to that page...thanks, Jimmy Glenn Burk

Jimmy Glenn Burk11/25/2014

The Hertz Gold membership thru the FedEx Credit Union, isn't offered any more.

Debora Williams Waller11/25/2014

I have heard that AT&T does not offer discounts to retirees. I have not experienced this myself yet.

Jimmy Glenn Burk11/26/2014

From the fedex retiree site( www.ferc1.org ) FedEx Cell Phone Discounts: FedEx Retirees are NOT eligible for discounts with the FedEx approved cell phone vendors such as ATT, Verizon, etc. However, if you had a plan with one of the vendors at the time you retired from FedEx, then that vendor may continue to grant you those discounts moving forward. Keep in mind that this is a courtesy on their part and they could change it at any time. Update: The club has been been notified by several of our members that the cell phone vendors are no longer honoring the discounts for FedEx retirees. We do hope to work with FedEx Sourcing to try and get the discount reinstated but this will take time based on the timing of contractual agreements. Check back for further updates.

That was awesome . Made me nostalgic. Still got purple blood. Even though i'm retired.

Buddy Johnson11/27/2014

I actually saw this plane and heard the story of it being ferried from the international airport to this field. Jimmy was kind enough to research (Thanks, Jimmy) and provide this for us all. I also shared with our tour guide in Alaska who was most appreciative!!

Laurie A. Tucker11/27/2014

True. True. True. False.

Jimmy Glenn Burk11/27/2014

Laurie's answers are correct. --- a. FedEx connected to the Internet via dial up until 1994 TRUE b. The request to connect directly to the Internet was turned down because it was too expensive and did nothing for the company. TRUE - The request was turned down, we did it anyway. It cost $5K a month to run a circuit to the closest internet node at the time, St. Louis c. Data Protection made the decision that every time you changed to a new page/URL on the browser, you had to log on again with your password TRUE - Data Protection at the time only did Mainframe security, and didn't know what the Internet was, so they decided that every time you went to a different server you had to sign in again to get access. Network Engineering ignored that decision. d. FEDUP was a site that FedEx endorsed False- Fedup was a site by a chicago courier, who seemed like he was a union organizer. It would come up as part of a search on FedEx and was pretty much anti-management.

Carl Wayne Hardeman12/3/2014

Medicare once again somehow found out about our retiree/buyout spending account and has refused to pay claims saying FedEx is my primary insurer - three times already in 2014. Medicare claims they will change it each time I call. Meanwhile claims are going unpaid. One from May this year has been submitted and denied three times so far even after calls to Medicare. Also happened to a colleague who finally got it straightened out after multiple claims denied and multiple calls to Medicare and multiple not happy service providers. A mess!

Vicki Shirey Sanders12/3/2014

Wow. It's a pain dealing with insurance.

Jack Brown12/3/2014

Carl, you should consider getting an Advantage Plan with a company like Humana. When you have a claim, you will deal with Humana's Customer Service instead of Medicare. Humana's Customer Service is great. We have Humana Gold PPO, which covers all the Medicare "Parts". Your monthly premium, over and above the funds deducted from you SS by Medicare, varies by State and County. Our 2015 Humana premium is $27 per person. Just a suggestion.

Carl Wayne Hardeman12/3/2014

Thanks Jack Brown

FedEx Trivia QuizFederal Express once sold these to employees. Why? and Where did they come from?

Rebecca Felts12/9/2014

I can only assume Fedex was gutting passenger planes to turn them into cargo jets.

Peter Dangerfield12/9/2014

Could be the five 737 passenger / cargo jets we bought to start flying passengers in the day and packages at night!

FedEx Trivia QuizOf the over 1200 software application components at FedEx, 560 were in LineHaul (air, hub, trucking). There are over 25,000 programs supporting all of FedEx.One app surrounds the large tanks that store FedEx jet fuel. What does this app do?

Jimmy Glenn Burk12/10/2014

Lightning Detection: There is an application that monitors sensors placed around the airport to detect any lightning strikes. If there is one in the vicinity the fuel pumps are automatically shut down.

Dave Hansen12/10/2014

Awesome!! Cool fact to know.

Mary A Johnson12/11/2014

Your application component #s (1200 and 560) sound LOW. You've got W&B, FORTE, TORTE, ULD, AutoDG ...

Jimmy Glenn Burk12/11/2014

Those numbers were from 1999 and weren't applications but groups the applications were put in. for defining all changes for Y2K. COSMOS was one group...which was probably over several thousand applications inside it. Chronos was another which also was probably in the thousands.

Has anyone else had trouble using the Reimbursement app who banks with FedEx Credit Assn? I got a denied claim because my bank name is not listed on the FECCA online mobile app so when I take a snapshot I only have the transaction #, date & amount my insurance premium.

Margaret Canon Bruch12/12/2014

Good luck! I'm over the reimbursement. Too much trouble

Carol Gassaway Kabakoff12/12/2014

Sandy, it's a lot of trouble but I print my monthly statement. I cut and paste page one to the page where they took out the premium. Then I take a picture of my cut and paste document with my phone and load it to the app. And yes I am unfortunately using scissors and tape but it works

Sandy Butler Stone12/12/2014

LOL...thanks Carol. I'll surely try this. It's the first time I've had trouble with Reimbursement process

Rebecca Felts12/17/2014

I am having MAJOR problems with them again. I went from Cobra to Retiree insurance. For reimbursement or pay direct to Fedex for retiree insurance.. MAKE SURE you put the correct address. My first payment went to Cobra.. now having to wait to get money back from them. THEN when I did all correctly they still told me today at the YSA hotline that the payment didn't go to Fedex. I am BEYOND stressed with this whole process.

Rebecca Felts12/17/2014

To be honest I will be glad when I am through with all my YSA money.. its been nothing but a headache.

FedEx Trivia QuizIn the early 80’s the SuperHub was brought online to test. Of 25,000 packages tested over 95% of the packages went to the wrong locations(inside the hub). I had a background in microprocessors and was sent to find the problems.Additionally, about 25% of the sort controllers went bad every night. Pick from the following what the problems were with the Rapistan sort controllers which were based on Zilog micros:a. There was a design flaw with the system b. None of the mx people were trained to fix the systems c. Being in the SuperHub was like being in an earthquake, all the boards vibrated out of their slots d. The mx guys zapped every board due to static electricity e. All the bad circuit boards were put back into inventory

Deby Abbott Jolley12/15/2014

I'm going with C.

Carl Wayne Hardeman12/15/2014

All of the above ?

Mary A Johnson12/15/2014

C D

Peter Dangerfield12/15/2014

Like Carl, all of the above!

Jimmy Glenn Burk12/16/2014

Answers: b,c,d & e all happened. Although Mx people were initially trained on the night shift, by the time the SuperHub was turned on, all the night shift people had rotated to the day shift…and day shift were working the night shift, so no one on the night shift had training. In addition, most had never worked on microprocessors or computers, and no one knew where to find the manuals that were provided by Rapistan.

Jimmy Glenn Burk12/16/2014

The problem with the 90%+ miss-sorts was that no one ever read the manuals on how to use the system and were using the CLEAR key incorrectly. I watched the sort for 3 nights before my eyes caught a small display on the sort controller. There were the same numbers flashing all thru the sort. No one knew where any manuals were, so I contacted Rapistan and they sent me one. Turns out it was the code that the clear key was being hit by the person entering the zip codes. No one was expert at using a 10 key pad for data entry so the keyers would hit clear to clear out their entries and re-enter the zip code. Problem was that the system was designed to clear all packages that hadn’t started down the sort belt. There would be one package already keyed, waiting to enter the sort belt, one that was right at the keypad, and there could be another package right behind it, that a fast keyer could start keying on. So hitting clear had nothing to do with clearing out the current entry, it cleared out 2-3 packages at once…these packages would just go down the belt to some unknown, mis-keyed Phantom Zone.

FedEx Trivia QuizIn the middle 80’s Federal Express had an idea of using the satellites that they had installed and helping more poverty areas of the country with new jobs. The idea was to use a version of the zapmailers to transmit airbill images to a location like Kentucky coal mining towns and have them key in information at night and transmit the data back before sort was finished in Memphis.a. What was this project called? b. Why was it abandoned?

Dave Hansen12/16/2014

ExpressStar One was what the bird was to be called. It was abandoned because the Challenger exploded and NASA cancelled all future commercial payloads.

Dave Hansen12/16/2014

I believe that the satellite was sold to Highes. The Varian HPA's (High Powered Amplifiers) were sold to Cylix Communications Corp and were used in their K-band project., Many people think that this project was Freds folly. In my opinion it was not. Had that bird gone up, even if the Zapmailer project failed, we would still be making money leasing time on the transponders (+ and -) on that satellite.

Jimmy Glenn Burk12/17/2014

This project was a subset of project REDS for remote revenue entry. One option was to provide more hours for station personnel and let them input data from airbills at night…but they weren’t good keyers Another option was to scan airbills with a modified zapmailer and transmit to a keying location. Same problems to coal mining areas, people can’t just be trained to key data correctly. Scan airbills and OCR as much data as possible was looked at, and just present data that couldn’t be resolved to a keyer. In the end, project REDS was cancelled due the project falling behind in the proposed schedule. Many years later, project GENESIS would put a high speed scanner in the stations, transmit to Memphis and translate/OCR the data.
