FedEx Trivia QuizFor 2 years in the mid 80's employees got a yearly bonus. Managers and above got no bonus even though profits were over $600MWhy?

Dave Hansen2/25/2015

Okay, I give. Why?

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/25/2015

Whomever was in charge of setting goals, decided that Domestic fedex needed to be inspired to support International growth. Managers and above in the u.s. would only get bonuses if both domestic and international both met their goals.

Danielle Harnisch2/25/2015

yep

Chuck Siegfried2/25/2015

Because I became a Manger in the mid 80's.

FedEx Trivia QuizIn the late 70's as Federal Express started putting computer terminals in the stations (Honeywell Incoterms), this equipment was connected to the Burroughs mainframe via modems. The modems were under the computer floor and there really was no way to diagnose problems on the data circuits.a. Who was the person contracted to put together a plan to modernize the data communications and to enable monitoring and diagnosing of the data Network?b. Two ladies were the only data Telecom people...name any one of them

David Hunt2/24/2015

a. Ancel Hankins

David Hunt2/24/2015

b, Diane White, Linda Petti, And Terri . Vernitta Rodgers was the Manager. Doug Jones and myself were the 2 guys. All this was as of May '78.

Dave Hansen2/24/2015

Ah, Vernitta Rodgers. Tough but fair. Had not heard that name in forever. When I met her she was managing the logistics call center on Winchester. We had a contract with Monsanto. Farmers called the call center and ordered doses of BGH (Bovine Growth Hormone).

Don Rose2/24/2015

Vernitta started at FedEx in 1973 as keypunch supervisor. We all had some great times in those early days.

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/25/2015

If you knew Vernitta...did you ever receive a neck massage from her???

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/25/2015

David Hunt correct on both a & b

Just for the FedEx history log. We were asked to provide someone to participate on an advisory panel from industry and academia for the Chief Scientist of the U.S. Army. One was review of the logistics plan for the rapid deployment of a brigade size force to a desert environment sustainable for three days. Another was Future Combat Systems. I was fortunate to be that person. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_Combat_Systems

Does anyone know if fdx went under would we still have our pensions?

Peter Dangerfield2/25/2015

I've was told by the VP Finance many year ago that our Traditional Pension Plan is outside of FDX control and supposedly can't be use to fund the company as in the case of United. Let's hope nothing has changed?

Danielle Harnisch2/25/2015

thats what I thought...so I was smart to move my portable elsewhere..lol

Marsha Terry Rider2/26/2015

The traditional pension plan is an annuity so Peter is right. Can't opine on the newer plan. Also while either or both might be safe from business failure, one can't predict what our government might want to go after in the future.

Danielle Harnisch2/26/2015

True . But at least you won't be sitting out there with the entire pension taken away!

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/25/2015

My cousin shared the following from a Karen Bryant, that looked like good advice for retirees & anyone: ____________________ ATTORNEY'S ADVICE - NO CHARGERead this and make a copy for your files in case you need to refer to it someday. Maybe we should all take some of his advice! A corporate attorney sent the following out to the employees in his company:1. Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put 'PHOTO ID REQUIRED.'2. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the 'For' line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won't have access to it.3. Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your home phone. If you have a PO Box use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your work address. Never have your SS# printed on your checks. (DUH!) You can add it if it is necessary. But if you have It printed, anyone can get it.4. Place the contents of your wallet on photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place.I also carry a photocopy of my passport when I travel either here or abroad. We've all heard horror stories about fraud that's committed on us in stealing a Name, address, Social Security number, credit cards..Unfortunately, I, an attorney, have firsthand knowledge because my wallet was stolen last month. Within a week, the thieves ordered an expensive monthly cell phone package, applied for a VISA credit card, had a credit line approved to buy a Gateway computer, received a PIN number from DMV to change my driving record information online, and more. But here's some critical information to limit the damage in case this happens to you or someone you know:5. We have been told we should cancel our credit cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them.6.. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc., were stolen. This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and this is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one). But here's what is perhaps most important of all: (I never even thought to do this.)7. Call the 3 national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and also call the Social Security fraud line number. I had never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that called to tell me an application for credit was made over the Internet in my name. The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.by the time I was advised to do this, almost two weeks after the theft, all the damage had been done. There are records of all the credit checks initiated by the thieves' purchases, none of which I knew about before placing the alert. Since then, no additional damage has been done, and the thieves threw my wallet away this weekend (someone turned it in). It seems to have stopped them dead in their tracks. Now, here are the numbers you always need to contact about your wallet, if it has been stolen:1.) Equifax: 1-800-525-62851-800-525-62852.) Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742 1-888-397-37423.) Trans Union : 1-800-680 7289 1-800-680 72894.) Social Security Administration (fraud line):1-800-269-0271 1-800-269-0271We pass along jokes on the Internet; we pass along just about everything. If you are willing to pass this information along, it could really help someone that you care about.

Dan Elliot2/27/2015

Good info..

Melody Preuitt Mettes2/28/2015

I suggest that you scan rather than photocopy. Then, mail the results to your gmail/yahoo account. Then when you are in Spain with no wallet or luggage, you can still pull up the data.

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/27/2015

Some interesting comments about Retired Life(from the Early Retirement Org forum)........JimmyB ---------------------------------------------------------------- One month into ER, I posted the three things that most surprised me. I’ve now updated that list and expanded the items to five:5. I’ve come to realize that I spent the last few years at work sleep deprived, and a full night’s sleep (at least eight hours for me) is one of the most crucial parts of living a healthy, well-balanced life. I was as productive as ever at work with less sleep, but I was constantly irritable. I chalked that up at the time to some of the challenging personalities I had to deal with, but I now think it was more about me -- if I’d had enough sleep, it would have been like water off a duck’s back. Maybe.4. I now understand why relatively few end up working part time in retirement, despite what they tell pollsters before they retire. Once you’ve tasted the freedom that comes from having full control of your life and no work-related stress, it’s very hard to give it up. Although I’ve heard retired friends say they’re seeking opportunities to do “meaningful” work of some sort, they want it entirely on their own terms. Not surprisingly, there aren’t many of those unicorns around. And as previous threads here have made clear, volunteer work can be as frustrating as regular work, without the financial compensation.3. Related to the above, if things get tight financially, I think it’s more likely that I’ll economize further rather than try to earn new income. I've stopped worrying too much about it, since it appears I can live on less than I originally estimated, barring unplanned major expenses.2. I’m never bored. Ever. It's very easy for me to stay mentally engaged, and being an introvert (like most of us here), I haven’t even had to ramp up my socializing much.1. Time goes by much quicker than pre-ER. That’s why focusing my energies is an important part of making the most of each day. ---------------------- 3 weeks into ER and my surprises are: 1. How little I miss work. 2. How rest deprived I have been for years. 3. How easily I can fill my days. 4. How quickly the week goes by. 5. How little I am interested in making time commitments that don't align with unstructured days.

Danielle Harnisch2/27/2015

So true except I love my part time job with the parks dept

FedEx Trivia Quiz:In the mid 90's the SuperTracker was running slow and new software loads every quarter were about to fill up all memory. One person designed something at work and home and solved both problems.a. Who did this b. What did he do

Bruce Lindow3/2/2015

that was back in the days when I had a lot of fun with this stuff.

Danielle Harnisch3/2/2015

Jim Bentley lol

Jim Bentley3/2/2015

Nope! Not this time.. LOL

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/2/2015

Answer: a. Bruce Lindow b. Bruce interfaced a flash memory board into the SuperTracker, which gave it much more memory and faster speeds. The alternative to the project Bruce initiated was for FedEx to spend at least $70M on new supertrackers and quadracks, which still had no laser scanner or other improvements, just more memory. It was one of the key projects that came out of Bruce's group which included designing and manufacturing all new DADS computers in the vans at about 1/3 the price, replacing the CommController (connected DEC computer to wireless network) which cost $12K for one that cost about $2K, and a redesign and rebuild years later of a SuperTracker with Laser scanning, 6 megs of memory, Infrared communications and other improvements.

Bruce Lindow3/3/2015

what Jimmy wrote is only part of the answer.

Bruce Lindow3/3/2015

a. was about a $10M project without counting internal manpower. b. was about $40M to $50M for DADS terminals and about $50K for the DADS commController, along with $55M for the EST with scanner. Just these projects totaled over $100M. In addition to the nig ticket items, there wwere also small pieces that amounted to several million dollars. To get these sized projects sucessfully approved for money and internal manpower and upper management support requires a very strong push and support by two great executives, Jimmy Burk and Winn Stephenson to move the ideas upward in a convincing way. There part was as critical as the engineering design, testing, and manufacturer.
