When I worked at the Memphis Hub I remember seeing the word BABO. What did this mean? i am curious, anyone know?

Charlie Derrick9/1/2015

It stood for Bypass And Bleed Off. It was a strategy to keep all of the freight from going through the hub. Jason Wellikoff was the project manager as I recall.

Gary Owens9/1/2015

CooL, Thanks!

Jimmy Glenn Burk9/2/2015

Some more BABO info: If I remember correctly, the original plan was that everything came to Memphis to be sorted and sent to the destination city. Even if a shipment was sent from a business in Los Angeles to another business in Los Angeles, it came to Memphis. It was considered the optimum way to keep custodial control of the package. As other metroplexes were added and volumes increased, it made sense to start Bleeding off packages where the volume was large enough to be sorted in a region. In some cases there were entire containers with freight from Los Angeles to New York for example. Those containers might come to Memphis, but Bypass the SuperHub sort and just be loaded on the aircraft to New York. Or they could go on an aircraft flying directly to a New England Ramp. Later, depending on Sort plans, for certain holidays where there was a 3 day weekend, some flights out of metroplexes like Indy or Oakland could be shut down, and all packages trucked to Memphis or another location, saving whole flights and associated fuel. Very complicated and as mentioned Jason was key to all the planning, including just getting containers to the right cities so they could be used. Photo of Jason:

Dan Elliot9/12/2015

Saw him a couple of years ago, he is still as sharp as ever!

Jimmy Glenn Burk9/12/2015

Mr. Barksdale is still on the FedEx Board; a vote was taken to allow he and FWS to remain on the Board since there was previously an age limit requiring them to retire this year. Winn Stephenson said he came to Memphis a few months ago to attend the Cook Industries IT reunion where he & many of the IBM staff came from. He is still Pres. of The Barksdale Group, but I understand his son is managing technology investments out of that group. He did an interview of the www.fedexlegends.info site a few years ago: http://fedexlegends.info/allvideos.html#jlb

Thank you for sharing. I still remember the great experience of jumpseating in the cockpit behind the pilot leaving Houston Hobby and flying right past the San Jacinto monument. It was the mid-1980's.

After years of attending big meetings I can tell you that less than 10 ever made any difference. But one of those was a meeting on the future of International in Paris chaired by Mike Ducker.
