There was a celebration of Bill Ogden's life this past Saturday at Dana Point, California. Here are four of many photos I received from his wife Candy. Bill has gone to sea...

Don Rose8/15/2016

I did not know Bill had passed away.

Bob Baxter8/15/2016

Yeah Don, Bill passed away on February 28. I believe he was just shy of 70 years old. He and Candy parked their travel trailer behind our garage when they passed through the area a few years back. I worked with him more in Customer Automation than I did in COS. Can't believe he's gone.

Don Rose8/15/2016

I can't believe it either Bob. Bill was still a young man.

Bob Baxter8/15/2016

That's what I keep telling MYSELF Don, and I'm older than you!

Don Rose8/15/2016

You're not much older Bob. I'll be 68 on Nov 1.

Bob Baxter8/15/2016

Looks like I'm 11 months older, Don! Thought it was more, old man!

Bob Baxter8/15/2016

By the way Don, I know this won't impress someone with a 3-digit employee number but... I started at Federal Express on this date 39 years ago. Yikes!

Don Rose8/15/2016

I would be closing in on 44 years if I had stayed...glad I left when I did.

Bob Baxter8/15/2016

The fun just couldn't last forever...

Dan Elliot8/15/2016

Wow, sorry to hear! Last I heard he was doing well! I didn't know he lived in Dana Point either...

Bob Baxter8/15/2016

Hey Dan, Bill had been living in Henderson, Nevada (just outside Las Vegas) since he retired in 2001. When he worked in Customer Automation, I believe he was living in Dana Point. For sure he was from Southern California. He always made sure to clarify "Not L.A."!

Marcie Littles Moss8/15/2016

Oh my goodness. I didn't know this. I worked with Bill for years at FedEx.

Leigh Pritchett Sawicki8/17/2016

I just tried and didn't have any problems

Janie Haynes8/17/2016

Thanks, I'll try again. Had no problems a couple of days ago but then the site disconnected me and so far I haven't been able to get back in.

Janie Haynes8/17/2016

Finally got back in. Had to use IE instead of Chrome.

Leigh Pritchett Sawicki8/17/2016

Mother has had some issues with her Chrome (not FedEx Related) and I have a mac. I keep writing her issues off as her being confused but now I'm thinking maybe not. Hers have been FB issues. Living far away from her, it's hard to tell if it's age-related or a true technical issue. Guess I shouldn't assume it's age related.

Janie Haynes8/18/2016

Well that's what I blame a lot of my computer issues on😬

Yes, last week after entering several times before with no problems. I called and they sheepishly stated they were having problems, specifically that their latest system update won't work with Firefox. It works with Explorer which I abhor especiaaly since IE doesn't allow me to print to cutepdf app. Call them to help you as I can't remember url address exactly (the redirect from yourspendingaccount.com doesn't work either,)

Jere Bledsoe8/18/2016

Always a pleasure to hear JLB talk. Only topped by FWS.

Don Rose8/18/2016

Brought back some great memories. Jim was a year off on our first package flight though. He said April 1974 and it was April 17, 1973.

Jere Bledsoe8/18/2016

I caught that too, Don. I decided not to call and just let it slide.

Jere Bledsoe8/18/2016

He also said something about shutting down for about 3 months and then starting up again. I can't think what he would be talking about.

Don Rose8/18/2016

He may have been talking about our first shot at opening service when we shipped 7 packages which, I believe, was late February. That was when we regrouped, scheduled a few more cities, etc. and executed a redo on April 17th.

Update Ray BurkMany of you know my brother Ray who works in Info Security. Ray had heart valve surgery last week in Dallas and and is doing great, and will return to Memphis in a few days. Instead of open heart surgery, they went in from the side of his chest and repaired the valve which allows much faster recovery.

Kay Brown Moody8/19/2016

Angela Maynard8/19/2016

Subject: FedEx is adopting the purple and orange colors of its FedEx Express unit for all operating units.

Jimmy Glenn Burk8/24/2016

FedEx is adopting the purple and orange colors of its FedEx Express unit for all operating units.By Wayne Risher of The Commercial AppealFedEx Corp. is making purple and orange the official colors of its farflung network of planes, trucks and people.Chairman Frederick W. Smith announced to employees Wednesday that the company would adopt the 43-year-old FedEx combination of purple and orange as its unified color scheme.Over the next five years or so the company will scrap other colors -- red, green, blue, platinum -- that have been paired with purple to differentiate operating units including FedEx Ground, FedEx Freight and FedEx Office. The simplified palette won't alter separation of Express, Ground and Freight into different operating units, although company officials acknowledged the public doesn't always distinguish among the units."We are certainly one brand to the world, and we're aware of that and proud of the fact that our brand is recognized as one of the most powerful brands in the world," said Patrick Fitzgerald, senior vice president, marketing and communications.Purple has always been the Memphis-based company's primary color and is firmly imbedded in corporate culture. The company mission, dubbed the Purple Promise, is that employees will make every FedEx experience outstanding.FedEx began using secondary colors other than orange in the late 1990s after it diversified beyond the express business into trucking-only offerings.Domestic parcel delivery company FedEx Ground's logo is purple and green, for example, while less-than-truckload company FedEx Freight is purple and red.FedEx's research finds strong consumer awareness globally of its purple and orange logo, Fitzgerald said."It became more and more clear to us that there would be strength in going to the simplified visual identity," he said."It's clear when you look at the iconic FedEx Express packaging, the white box with purple and orange logo, it's 43 years of establishment, across the drop boxes and vehicles and aircraft. It's been built up over time, and it makes sense," Fitzgerald said.Fitzgerald said the timing is right because this year's acquisition of Europe's TNT Express "provided us an opportunity to create a simpler global brand."No immediate change is planned in the TNT Express brand, although Fitzgerald noted TNT's official color is FedEx orange.

Sheila Turnage Harrell8/24/2016

Great move!!!

Who proposed the idea of replacing the SmartBase (device which connected all the supertrackers to Quadracks & COSMOS) with a basic Personal computer with an SNA/SDLC comm board? I think it was Gary Pantlik, in Kurt Wulff's communication software group 3. At one point it was proposed to put a PC in the stations and connect all devices to it on a LAN. What was this internally developed device called? SPYDER or SPIDER 4. When Zapmail was shut down, there was a $50M outstanding contract to receive a satellite system and ground stations. It was proposed to use this system for data and voice at all remote locations. Instead of doing this Telecom recommended to consolidate all data and voice communications over a backbone system at each call center. What was this system called & Who was the vendor? System was called I-NET, and vendor was NET Technolgy 5. For what system at FedEx were the first routers installed, and who was the vendor? I believe it was for the GOCC, and router vendor was CISCO 6. In 1988 the summer Olympics were held in South Korea. Strategic Integrated Systems wanted to place Supertrackers in Korea to enable posting of PODs for delivery. What did the one circuit to South Korea cost per month? a. $2k b. $5k c. $10K c. $25K answer was c. $25K per month 7. To which city(ies) were there daily flights from Memphis to support development? None of the airlines flew directly to Colorado Springs, except sometimes in Ski season 8. What was the initial number of packages a customer had to ship per day to get a Customer Automation /Personal computer device? 100(corrected) 9. How many hours a year did you have to work to get credit for the entire year(retirement wise)? 1000 10. When the SuperHub was built there were many slides for packages to go down. There were a number of pregnant women working in the Hub and they were concerned they might get hurt. 11. What item at the SuperHub has caught fire and shut down most of the Hub? the main feeder sort belt caught fire: I think from the bearings locking up, over heating and caught the belt on fire

Jimmy Glenn Burk8/28/2016

FedEx Trivia QuizThe Norand Smartbase was a PC based controller that communicated to COSMOS (SNA) on one side, and on the other side, connected to QuadRacks where all the supertrackers were inserted to dump their scans to COSMOS, and to charge their batteries. When developed, there was a specification set where there would be NO KEYBOARD on this device....because employees would find a way to play with it, and lock up this device which was for one purpose, get the scans into COSMOS. He wanted a simple keypad so even monkeys couldn't lock it up.Who set this requirement?

Jimmy Glenn Burk8/30/2016

Answer: It was Dr. Ron Ponder It was a hilarious meeting talking about how to keep station employees using this system to collect scans, as a computer terminal. I think other systems had been blown up by employees just hitting the wrong sequence of keys, and he was wanting that problem to stop. This controller used an IBM like computer motherboard, but there was only a small display and small keyboard on the system to encourage station employees to not play with it....

Subject: FedEx Retiree Random Poll

Jimmy Glenn Burk9/12/2016

FedEx Retiree Random PollDid you ever bid into a job solely to work for manager that was there and/or did not bid, to stay where you were? ---- At one time in Services, and maybe still, mgmt wanted to rotate more managers and experienced employees into other groups. This was primarily to increase skill sets for individuals across more than just one department and to develop more expertise in certain areas, versus having to depend on just a few knowledgeable people.Mgmt was totally surprised that employees didn't want to rotate and most didn't want to move to another city, even for more opportunities.Even more surprising was that many employees had bid into jobs just to work for one manager whom they trusted to watch out for them and who were honest with them.
