FedEx TriviaOperations Research produces a package volume forecast from every zip code to every other zip code for typical days in the future.LineHaul takes these numbers, runs dozens of programs against them and produces truck and air scheduling, pilot scheduling, sorting matrices etc and with inputs of holidays etc to tweak it. This is loaded into the supertrackers, PSCAN, all sorting devices for the entire month. How many typical days does Ops Research provide in their models for the month processing?a. one
b. two
c. three
d. four
Joe Cutrell9/16/2016
a. one
Is this what we called the "lane" file? Also, I think the forecast was in pounds.
Pat Woodruff Gunter9/17/2016

Jimmy Glenn Burk9/17/2016
Answer: a. One was the correct answer. A remarkable process to generate one typical days results and be able to plan all sorting, staging of aircraft & trucks, scheduling of pilots, manning at stations and hubs....all from a one day Ops Research model...

FedEx pollLess than 1% of the employees ever jumpseated....then it was taken away.Did you ever use jumpseat for personal travel & to were?
Shane Borden9/15/2016
I tried to, but unfortunately got bumped. By the time I got to try it again, September 11th came and then it was taken away.
Raymond Lane Cross9/15/2016
I used it a dozen or so times, both for business and personal. I thought it was pretty cool and was sorry when they took it away.
Gary Phillips9/15/2016
I used it a good bit. Traveled to Boston many times, to San Jose, San Francisco, Phoenix, and to Ft Lauderdale a few times. It wad a nice Perk as long as you didn't mind getting somewhere at 3 or 4 a.m. Jumpseated for business a few times as well. I would have guessed more people (1%) used the benefit.
Melissa Leech Ziemer9/15/2016
I jumpseated out of Houston to Los Angeles, Denver & Tulsa. Non-automated. I had to set my alarm for midnight, since (as I recall) 12:01 is when reservations started taking calls for 2 weeks out. Redial, redial for 30 minutes sometimes to finally get through. Early am spent in the jumpseat trailer dozing in an easy chair with my travel alarm set so I wouldn't miss my outbound flight. I definitely had more time than money back then.
Daria Faye Ellis9/15/2016
Yes Los Angeles & Los Vegas
Peter Carabetta9/15/2016
I used to Jumpseat in the Falcons to Memphis.. Met my wife there 😀😉
Bob Baxter9/15/2016
Paris, Brussels, London Stansted, L.A.(Burbank), New York (Newark), Philadelphia (many times), all personal trips. Many, many business trips back to Memphis - I always knew I could count on FedEx to get me home at night. One business trip was on a FedEx 747 to Newark! Sue and I made our final jumpseat trip to Seattle in April 2000, right before we got the benefit ripped out from under us. We sure did enjoy and appreciate it all those years that we had it.
Charlie Derrick9/15/2016
Many times on business (when it was required) and personal. My first was on a Falcon. Does anyone remember the forth seat on the Falcon?

FedEx History TriviaThe first dedicated video conferencing system was placed in COS to assist in coordinating development with Memphis.Where was the second system placed?
Peter Dangerfield9/21/2016
Correction Jimmy I had one installed between the TAB conference room and the Pilot Administration Bldg on Sprinkle mid seventies at $60K each with plans to install one in Anchorage. We set up a 18' X 6' screen with three rear projectors. Not sure of the dates when your more cost effective solution was available but questing mid eighties
Jimmy Glenn Burk9/22/2016
Didn't know about the Pilot Admin one.
First I dealt with was the COS to MEM link for development and planning.
Second I remember was MEM to DCA for Mr. Smith & Legal team to talk to the Washington FedEx lawyers
just a history tidbit... around the mid 1990's FWS wanted somehow to get closer to employees in the field to get their feedback. He envisioned that he could walk to his conference room and have regular conversations with groups of employees at a different stations or locations every week. But telecom costs were prohibitive at the time. He even had us look into the satellite dishes mounted on trucks used at NFL football games with the possibility of those trucks roaming the country to set up sessions with the employees. It was also cost prohibitive at the time.
Peter Dangerfield9/22/2016
Cleave Seal wanted to have a link to Anchorage hub for pilot meetings. We did the test in Memphis but is was too expensive to move forward. Funding dried up about the time to implement, also the user interface wasn't as easy as the ones today.

FedExr's around the WorldTravelling on Oahu we stopped at a roadside stand selling Otais and fresh fruit. The lady that made our drinks, asked where we were from and we said Memphis. She got excited and said oh...Federal Express! I love Federal Express! I worked there for 29 years and took the retirement offer in 2004. it was a great thing for me. she had worked for flying tigers In the lax hub.We talked about Heidi Amling and other LAX employees there. she seemed to love her part time job and living in Hawaii
