FedEx Trivia Quiz: Who am I? 1/30/14In the early days of FedEx, a new member was added to the senior mgmt team.FWS called an early morning Saturday meeting. They were an hour into the meeting and waiting for FWS to arrive. This person had his secretary bring in a large glass of orange juice, and two small airline bottles of vodka and place before him. It was to express his displeasure at these saturday executive meetings.Who was this person?

Don Rose1/30/2014

Sounds like Vince F.

Rebecca Felts1/30/2014

Don't know but bet he didn't last long. 1 ·

Brenda J. Brunner1/30/2014

No idea, did he get to come in Monday? :) 2 ·

Marsha Terry Rider1/30/2014

John Dauernheim?

Penny Hitchcock Hopper1/30/2014

My bet is that he DID return the following Monday or Jimmy wouldn't be asking the question. There was a completely different corporate culture then, and not just at FedEx. The question indicates that the alcohol was a political statement and not for consumption. Don's guess of Vince F. is pretty good, I think.

FedEx Trivia Quiz 2/3/14:Around 1992 Ron Ponder left FedEx to become COO of Sprint. Dennis Jones took his CIO job at FedEx.DHJ did a search outside to fill two VP slots, but eventually promoted two internal directors to vice presidents.Who were the first two people he promoted to VP?

Gary Phillips2/3/2014

Marsha Terry Rider2/3/2014

Spangler? or was she already VP?

Carl Wayne Hardeman2/3/2014

rob carter and cynthia spangler 2 ·

Gary Phillips2/3/2014

RC would be kind of ironic. May have been however. It should have been Jimmy and Glenn Burk. :-)

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/3/2014

Pat Galvin left. Jon Ricker made VP over GOCC and Linehaul Cynthia Spangler made VP over Revenue Jim Tollefson left. Chuck Kirk made VP over COS. Jon Ricker left to Bellsouth. Rob Carter made VP over GOCC & Linehaul Then regional ITD vps created: Denise Wood to Apac, and Darryl Skoog in Europe.

Dan Elliot2/4/2014

Chris Hjelm?

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/4/2014

Best I can remember: Soon after DHJ made CIO, Chris was moved as an MD into Logistics under Jim McKinney. Jim I think was then made SVP over Air Ops, and a person named Colandres was hired from the outside as VP of BLS. Chris was then moved into the Chronos project where he eventually became VP over the Orlando group. Colandres tenure at FedEx was about 364 days.

Subject: Legends sightings:

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/4/2014

Legends sightings:Brett Bonner: Had breakfast with Brett this morning. Brett currently reports to Chris Hjelm who is CIO at Kroger in Cincinnati. Brett was a catalyst and a very important part of FedEx sort systems & technology development for FedEx.Terry Cox: Sitting behind us at Perkins was Terry Cox. Worked with Terry at DCC for 4 years then at FedEx till his retirement in the 90's. Terry was instrumental in developing FedEx's early Networks & Satellite systems. Terry still lives in Fisherville, on the Fayette/Shelby county line.

Gary Phillips2/4/2014

Terry hired me into Network Engineering in 1984. Never worked with Brett but played tennis with Jimmy, Brett, Johnny Wong, Dick Braley and others for several years in the mid to late 90s and into early 2000s.

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/4/2014

It was around 1975-76, I was a Sr. Engineer for Burroughs. I went to a company called DCC to load software into a Burroughs computer. Next to me was a person on the phone trying to help a customer somewhere in Texas get their Burroughs computer up so they could process advertising and timeslots for a tv station. He wasn't getting anywhere, looked at me, and said...will you take this call and handed me the phone. I asked a few questions and had customer do a couple things and their computer came back online. He then said...will you talk to my boss about a job? we have over 300 of these systems across the country and we don't really know much about them. I talked to his boss, Doug Rother, then to the COO of the company and they made me a job offer. The person that handed me the phone was Terry Cox and I began working with Terry & Ancel Hankins for the next several years, and learned a lot about telecom from them.

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/4/2014

I had been at FedEx about a year and had written the DADS radio & sna software, and wrote one of the original URSA routines for a SuperHub system. A young guy wanted to meet with me. He wanted to download some files from the mainframe into a portable computer he got hold of(there were no personal computers then). He wanted to know how to program a UART and how to use a modem. I explained how to do what he wanted. He was a nice and bright guy and appreciative of the help, then he vanished. Thus ended, my first meeting with Brett Bonner.

FedEx Trivia Quiz 2/10/14In 1982, FedEx rolled out Project Early(or Earlybird).a. What was project Early?b. Why did FedEx implement this strategy?

Dickie Dunn2/12/2014

Proper name of “Operation React” when UPS entered the Air Express business Stay ahead of their strategies ?? 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/12/2014

UPS had entered the over night market. Ron Ponder's OPs Research group had run models on whether Federal Express had enough capacity to move the commit times for deliveries from 12:00 noon to 10:30 and whether UPS could counter that strategy. Results were that it would take years for UPS to match that strategy as they were integrating parcel 4-5 day delivery with express deliveries. FedEx announced 10:30 delivery to offset any advantages UPS thought they could to compete. In addition, FedEx was targeting moving into document delivery with Zapmail. Speeding up deliveries would free up more couriers to make pickup and deliveries of documents. Another directive was to roll out DADS everywhere so that couriers could be dispatched in minutes for pickups. Jim Moore & Richard Dunn, Jim Bentley & the Radio Group led those efforts to install 30-40,000 terminals and the wireless infrastructure needed to support it.

FedEx Trivia Quiz 2/11/14In late 1977 a centralized telephone system (ie call center) was tested in Newark which was connected to a rough prototype of COSMOS programmed on a Burroughs 6700; after success it was quickly rolled out to 11 more cities. Why was Newark chosen for this test?

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/12/2014

Newark was chosen because statistics showed it was the worst performing city. As soon as the Call Center was installed, it freed up dozens of station personnel who could then concentrate on increasing service levels to customers.

FedEx Trivia Quiz 2/13/14:Tech Services:After Zapmail Field Services was adapted to support FedEx equipment, especially Radio/Dads, modems, and Customer Automation equipment. Tech services used a model or spreadsheet to determine how many new headcount they needed each year, to meet different response times, which Finance supported. This was based on how many service calls were made, time to fix or load software etc, and response time. One year, Jim Colson requested about 60 new field positions.Chuck/Charles Morgan wrote one software program for Tech Services. After seeing the program demonstrated, JimC told finance to cut his headcount in half. What did Chuck do that helped Tech Services?

Charles Morgan2/13/2014

Was it TRAP, the "Telecom Remote Access Program"? Designed to allow dialup access to the systems to perform maintenance such as assist with user issues, perform software updates, configuration changes, etc? 2 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/13/2014

Chuck is quick thinking to be this early in the day. Chuck wrote TRAP which was one of the industries first pieces of software that allowed a PC to dial another PC and remotely execute DOS commands and troubleshoot a system as if the person was in the same room with the remote PC. No longer did Tech Services have to dispatch a field tech to look and diagnose Customer automation programs. They could do much of the diagnosis from Memphis, saving many man hours of travel. Carl Wayne Hardeman2/17/2014

and a better than average racquetball player

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/18/2014

a. This is James B. Moore ( aka Jim Moore)

b. What did he do? Jim was hired by Charlie Brandon and he built the Radio Engineering Group; later became MD of Network Engr, then over Network Ops. He was the main instigator in getting FedEx to procure a private radio network for dispatching. His group procured the licenses, selected the sites, rolled out the equipment, maintained it; started a BERT group to help support it, then was the champion to push DADS into the field. He also helped train Dispatchers on how to efficiently use the wireless network. He built a maintenance organization inside the company & later pushed the formation of an external company that FedEx could utilize to roll out 42,000 DADS terminals(Cetacea Sound). As the MD of Network Engineering he was in the middle of a direction change. After Zapmail there was a desire to utilize a Satellite system for the field locations. He strongly pushed a solution proposed by Roy Beard & Denise Wood, to utilize T-1 Multiplexers and build an internal network using the call centers as nodes in the network. It allowed bandwidth to be efficiently utilized and made the network cheaper and more flexible. It probably wouldn't have happened without his hard headedness and pushing to do something new. As a side note, when UPS attempted to reproduce what Jim's group had created in the radio realm, they tried 2 times and failed, finally outsourcing a cellular solution to McGraw Cellular. Jimmy Glenn Burk2/17/2014

Carl's comment on Jim being good at racquetball brought back this memory. Jim was playing a match, I think at the Racquet Club. Someone came up to him that he knew a little about at FedEX who was also an MD. The guy wanted to play Jim in a match, so Jim said ok. When they went onto the court, this person didn't have any safety goggles. Jim asked him about it, and he had forgotten them. Jim went immediately to the shop out front, bought him a pair of goggles and told him to put them on...he said one swipe of his racquet could take his eyeball out of the socket. Jim finished the match..don't know who won, but Jim said he learned how to beat him by aggravating him with shots he couldn't handle...Jim was mental... The person he met that day was Dennis Jones who would later become his boss 4 ·

That collection made the difference in employees getting a profit sharing check that year.

FedEx Trivia Quiz 1/25/14Sometime in the 90's FedEx was growing it's express volume and UPS had entered the express market. FedEx had about 51% of the volume & UPS had about 48%. No matter what UPS tried the percentages were staying the same year to year. Then UPS decided on a radical strategy. They targeted FedEx's top 10 clients. An example was JC Penny: FedEx had all their Express business which was worth $10M.; UPS had the ground business worth $90M.What type offer did UPS make to JC Penny and other top FedEx customers??

Liz Ciulla Carrozza2/25/2014

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/25/2014

Winn Stephenson: Move the targeted company's express packages for free with a bundling deal Edited ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/25/2014

In the JC Penny example: FedEx bid $10M for the next years express volume, UPS bid $90M to handle all the ground and express volume Essentially for one year, UPS would handle the express packages for free. This meant that FedEx, to get the business, would have had to bid $0 to get the express business. all this was done by UPS, just to get their percentages up; as I remember, it didn't do too much for them doing this.

Liz Ciulla Carrozza2/25/2014

For many, it's always been a bidding war between FedEx and UPS, seesaw back and forth. Gone is the day when price wasn't the biggest consideration.

FedEx Trivia Quiz 2/26/14: In 2005 Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast. Deliveries & normal operations weren't possible for months.a. What did UPS do with it's employees on the coast? b. What did FedEx do with it's employees?

Deby Abbott Jolley2/26/2014

FedEx set up a hotline support group to make sure that all employees were ok - and made sure they found out about every single one.

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/26/2014

As relayed to us employees in the early days of Katrina. Initially UPS told employees they were furloughed and would be called back when the facilities opened again. Walmart, as written in internet articles, cut off their employees also. FedEx announced their employees affected would be paid for 60 days and benefits would continue while infrastructure was rebuilt. -------------- Three weeks after Katrina, UPS announced that the UPS employees would be paid two weeks, and those affected would be given 30 day medical coverage while they reopened their facilities. FedEx initially donated $1M to the American Red Cross for relief efforts, and threw in another 1/2 million in shipping services to the Red Cross. UPS donated $1.25 million. --------- The FedEx Radio group and Field Services group quickly got communications and towers working and made those communications services available to relief workers. It was a major help to the region. 2 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/27/2014

Tidbits: many many fedex express & ground tractor trailers came thru memphis and were loaded with food, ice and supplies and made trips to the region. There were many volunteers from FedEx to go help in the region...but they found out the government had instituted a certification process to be able to enter the region, just no one knew about it. FedEx executive management was more than willing to help it's employees and the region, FWS commented that was part of great value in Federal Express in helping others. The relief workers, I think borrowed every satellite phone that fedex possessed, which were probably around 5 or 6 Edited · 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/4/2014

In the past, I've been on technology & advisory boards, and heard many stories how companies outsourced IT, that it always eventually failed, and then they had to bring stuff back with fewer staff to support things. And I have talked with many support groups for personal purchases in the caribbean, mexico, india and who knows where. I was pleasantly surprised with support from Dell. I replaced an 8 year old gateway computer with a Dell w/23 inch monitor. The monitor flaked out within a week. I called...it was an agent from India. Had to go thru voice response and 2 agents, but all spoke good english. They couldn't exactly recognize some letters but always repeated it back as 'b' as in boy etc. They had me provide info, do a diagnostic, apologized for a bad monitor, and put in an order for a new one, shipped it fedex ground, told me they would call me back the day after it was delivered to make sure that one worked. they then asked would I speak to their supervisor; he spoke perfect english and wanted to know that the agent did his job, that I could understand him well, and to again say they were sorry. the day after delivery they called back to confirm everything was working ok. this is the first time out of a dozen outsourced type calls, that I had a good experience. 2 ·

Terrie Hoerning3/4/2014

I am glad you had a good experience. I call the billing department at Xfinity (cable vision) and had a hard time with understanding what was being said so I asked for a supervisor. I do miss the customer service most companies provided in the past.

Answer: around 1998 it was about 50/50; there were far fewer International flights than domestic, but being longer it took at least 5 crews for each aircraft per month to staff Intl flights. I would think that ratio has changed since FedEx does so much USPS business during the day now.

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/6/2014

Appreciation From the day I started at FedEx in 1980, there seemed to be an appreciation of everyone who worked at FedEx of other people's job. There was competition and sometimes jealousy of other groups like ITD that got attention, but still management portrayed everyone was part of the wheel. Especially couriers who were always portrayed as the front line interface to our customers. Pilots were also portrayed as playing a key role as well as operations folks. No one seemed to be portrayed as most important, all jobs were important. In one senior meeting a question was asked to FWS, 'Why do the pilots seem to have more problems blending in with that philosophy?' (This was after the Flying Tigers merger) FWS' answer was pretty good: He said he had tried to get the pilots into the spirit of being part of the company and many did. But, he said everyone needs to realize that they live by different rules than other employees. First they are under more pressure. They have to annually pass a physical, if they don't, they can't fly and have lost much of their pay. Pilots go by a seniority system, just part of the history of that career path. And they do fly odd hours and are responsible for tens or hundreds of millions of dollars worth of aircraft. And it is a life/death situation they are in versus a job on the ground.

Rebecca Felts3/8/2014

Jimmy I think once FedEx split the company into separating Operating companies that philosophy died. The "Operate Independently, Complete Collectively" statement really caused a shift and problems that still exist today throughout the company.

from Winn Stephenson: It was loaded improperly. There is a specific sequence to loading a dc10/md11. The main deck must be loaded first, followed by the aft belly. A tether is attached to the nose to prevent the plane from tipping backwards, but maybe it was not strong enough. I don't know what the final resolution was - misload or parted nose tether. Once it sits on its tail, it cannot be unloaded and a crane is required to right the plane.

David is correct. The company began plans to use alternative transportation, leasing planes with pilot crews for Europe flights, and planes and crews for flights to South America. The contracts with these other companies were binding, they were permanent for the duration of the contract. The company, as it always does, ran models on a Federal Express with limited aircraft and even no aircraft for a possible new Express using a mixed mode fleet. There were 3 scenarios worked out in great detail to position the company to move forward and provide for our customers, no matter what happened. http://www.nytimes.com/1998/12/19/business/tentative-accord-is-reached-with-federal-express-pilots.html Tentative Accord Is Reached With Federal Express Pilots nytimes.com 1 ·

An early outsourcing experience.Around the mid 90's an IT Director & about 70 FedEx employees in Memphis were told they were being displaced. They were all offered jobs doing the same thing they were doing in an outside company that their jobs were outsourced to

.a. What did these employees support?

b. Why were they told they were being displaced?

c. Where did their open positions go?

d. How many employees took these outsourcing jobs?

A. These people were in LHSD, supporting Air Ops primarily. B. The company wanted to move to client server and outsource the mainframe support (inaccurately positioned to the Air Ops customer mgmt.). 1 ·

Buddy Johnson3/19/2014

Buddy Johnson C. The positions were moved to Dallas D. This affected approx 85 Memphis-based employees Although I was not affected, I still have the crappy book the IT management team (Jones-Humphries) prepared for these folks. All were told their positions had been eliminated and they would have to re-apply, either to the outsourcing company or to the new Dallas Mgmt team. 2 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/19/2014

Almost all the answers above are correct:

a. What did these employees support? LineHaul Apps especially AOD, on the mainframe, written in COBOL; as was about 90% of the applications running in the company at that time

b. Why were they told they were being displaced? they were COBOL programmers, and hadn't updated their skills to Unix/C; all new appls were to be written on open systems ie Sun, HP unix systems in C

c. Where did their open positions go? The 70+ positions were all posted in a new group formed in Dallas which mostly supported AGFS(trucking); and at least another 80 new positions were posted there.

d. How many employees took these outsourcing jobs? only about 2 employees took the outsourcing positions; because almost all the applications in the company ran COBOL at the time, it was easy for them to bid on jobs elsewhere.

Notes: in about 3-4 years the outsourced applications were all moved back into the company. The Director who was also displaced was Steve Steilling, a great person who had come in with the Cook IT acquisition.

Carl Wayne Hardeman3/19/2014

The access to new hires from Dallas was mainly H1B's who got their one year in and left or so I heard. The proof is in the pudding. This was part of the plan to make DHJ Exec CIO with several CIO's under him such as Humphries in Dallas. Each was to have their own computer ops area and standards setting authority. 1 ·

Another of the reasons was to get techies to cross the street and come work for FDX, They forgot that it was a 2-way street. Most of the planning for this was Jones-Post, very little Kevin.

Interview with Tom Bullion from www.fedexlegends.info

Tom began his career at FedEx in 1973 and was employee 920.Federal Express Initial Concept

FWS's initial plan was to start FedEx service by flying Federal Reserve checks from major cities to check clearing locations, then fly the sorted checks back to the original banks. For this reason the company was named Federal Express.A problem with the plan was the many of the banks had long term contracts with many contract air carriers to transport their checks and couldn't break those contracts, to sign on with Federal Express. It wasn't till FWS engaged Art Bass and Vince Fagan that the idea of making Federal Express the package transportation system like UPS was flushed out. Vince came up with the idea that we were a trucking company whose trucks travelled at 550 miles per hour.FedEx Corporate ColorsThe Falcon jets were initially painted Red, White and Blue but the Post Office sued the company saying that those were the colors of USPS.

So, Federal Express changed colors to Purple, Orange and White.

The General ( I asked Tom about the General who was brought in as a CEO to run the company in the mid 70's; ie story from Roger Frocks book on FedEx history:)General McNeally was known for edicting that he have his own personal bathroom and personal parking space and other perks. He tried to get together his own investment group to take over FedEx stock, but this failed and FWS eventually fired him.Rating, Scanning, Customer Service, DispatchingTom worked on most of the original concepts that made FedEx great. He wrote one of the original rating Cobol programs, so that we could give customers rates on services and help locate exception packages. He also worked with Memphis programmers like Chuck Graham and they worked the original scenario to move Customer calls for pickups from the stations to a centralized call center, because calls were overloading manpower at each station. The original prototype was called DIC-Aids (Delivery Information Center – Automated Information and Dispatch System and ran on the Burroughs 6700. Mr. Smith loved the demonstration but paled at DIC-AIDS and wrote COSMOS on a napkin at the Sawmill. This became COSMOS SYSTEM. Tom worked with Bob Higgins and others in Colorado Springs to plan COSMOS transfer to ACP on IBM mainframes, and to begin working on a system to track the packages.Federal Express wanted to give proof of delivery and attach to the customer's invoice. One part of the signed airbill from the delivery was keyed when returned from the courier. One of the early concepts to track packages was an airbill with colored rings on it, where the courier would tear off and put on a belt, the rings would be returned and info on them keyed. In initial discussions, Tom knew that this would be a burden on the couriers. Larry Stoltenburg (who had been hired in Memphis & transferred to Colorado Springs) came up with the idea to put bar codes on the airbills and use scanners to verify delivery. Larry's manager though, was a proponent of the ring solution, and Larry was fired. Eventually though, this manager was fired, and the bar code scenario went forward. One of the initial problems was how to get bar codes and make numbers for every airbill different. Janice McNeal found a German company who produced print wheels that could index the number and figure the mod-7 check digit fast enough to print these new airbills. That is the initial solution the company went with.Tom then worked with Intermec, Norand and others to see what technology was out there and they came up with a 12 city test scenario. Some of the locations would test full functionality (ie end to end scanning) and others would use basic scans to start the process.Norand HHTHand Held TerminalThere wasn't a lot of scanner technology in the late 70's, and Tom selected Norand to start the initial tests.Knowing that the labor of scanning these airbills would be onerous to the couriers, and just something else they had to do; Tom discussed this issue with Mr. Pete Willmont and said we really need someone from the field, who can interface to the field and push the tests and for the field to do the tests. The person selected was a District Director named Harry Dalton. Harry was well respected by the field and he relocated to Colorado Springs to work with the software development team, and eventually moved to Memphis.Tom remembers the early testing. In a skydiving incident, his parachute failed to open, but when he landed, he fortunately landed on his back, on his parachute backpack. He did break his back in 6 places but survived. As he was recovering Harry visited him and wanted to know if or when he could travel. Tom was the only one who knew how to execute the test plan. The 12 city test had been scheduled and since Tom was the project lead, and had all the info, Harry needed him to travel.Tom relayed that he indeed did travel, and helped Harry, and Harry helped him by carrying his bags giving him some of his pain medicine…After testing it was decided that the full blown software (IIA) was too onerous so COSMOS IIB project was funded and deployed. FedEx would scan packages in and out of Stations, delivery and exception. Container scans and scans and in and out of the Memphis Hub were put on hold. After Tom deployed the scanners, when a customer called about a package, Customer Service could tell them what city it was actually in.After IIa, Tom transitioned the tracker inventory and management to Jimmy Sowell (see Jimmy Sowell video).InternationalAfter COSMOS IIB Tom transferred to International working with Jim Dunkel. FedEx was starting to expand into Canada. FedEx would fly packages to a Cleveland, OH, transfer packages to Air Canada. Air Canada would fly to Canadian cities and hand off to a delivery company called Canseca. One of the initial problems was how to use zip codes for the destination address. The US zip code used 5 numeric digits. Canada used 6 digits which could be alpha or numeric.Tom worked with the billing staff to come up with a translation table using dummy zip codes.Eventually Air Canada decided they didn't want to be in the package business, and FedEx started flying the Falcons into Canada. Business just went vertical and growth was at a fast pace.Tom was working with Customs, but no one at FedEx was an expert in customs. He posted a job nationwide and received about 27 resumes. As he was going thru the stacks of resumes, one kept falling on the floor and he kept picking it back up and putting it into the large stack. He finally picked it off the floor again, and looked at it closely. He liked what he saw, and called this guy named Al Basemore who had just retired from Customs. Tom said something like " I'm Tom Bullion from Federal Express and I just got your resume….is anything in it true?......"Tom hired Al on the spot.ClearanceIn 1982 FedEx was transmitting facsimile manifests to Customs, but clearance was slow. Tom talked to one the Customs officials up north about how they can speed this up. The Customs guy relayed well there was one computer system they were using in Miami that pre-cleared packages from Latin America. Information about trusted shippers was sent before the packages were transported and Customs would pre clear some of the packages and select other packages that they wanted to open.Tom's department started working on this concept to pre-clear packages and discovered they could even get paid by customers to do this work. These systems were eventually called Broker and Select and allowed FedEx to clear packages faster than other companies, around the world.ZAPMAIL & International TelecommunicationsEventually Tom was transferred to work on a special project to make way for International Zapmail and another company to be called FITC (Federal Express International Transmission Corporation) internationally. FedEx could buy telecom services in bulk and sell to other companies or interface with International Networks as a Public carrier. To establish the links into these foreign PTT's (Public Telephone & Telegraph); FWS contracted with the former head of ITT for all of Europe. His name was Tom Greenish. (Eventually his son Pat Greenish would be hired to run the FITC entity at FedEX).Tom G. had been based in Geneva or Zurich Switzerland, knew 5 languages and was networked to every PTT in Europe and most of the world. Tom Bullion was selected to travel with him, as the FedEx rep and to take care of transmitting contracts and agreements.FedEx AeronauticsAfter Zapmail Tom was transferred to an Advanced Projects group under Alan McArtor. The group was called FedEx Aeronautics and Tom worked with Noan Samples, Julie Ellis and Bill Cummings. They worked on several concept projects such as the following:Trans-Oceanic Transports ConceptsA Later Prototype of Lockheed's Air ShipsAir Ships: they designed a new dirigible with Lockheed Skunk Works to ply the oceans as cargo freighters. The plans included operating scenarios, fueling stations, new docking maneuvers etc. This project was presented to the Board as a new potential venture. Tom worked with Lockheed on the concepts and designs for this new era of air ship. The Lockheed team that had designed the stealth fighter/bomber had completed their work and Lockheed assigned all of them to FedEx's Air Ship project.Reference: FedEx & Airships Wiki ArticleFederal Express (FedEx) was reportedly "negotiating the possible purchase of a non-rigid training airship" in early 1981, with the possibility of an order for "75-tonne payload R.150 cargo airships" to follow, and Redcoat—through which FedEx had approached AI—switched its order to the R150, ordering four airships with options on another 10. FedEx was motivated by fuel-efficiency concerns and considered airships suitable for lower-priority 48-hour package deliveries. However, FedEx stated in late 1981 that its airship plans had been "put aside for the time being" and Redcoat went into voluntary liquidation in mid-1982 The R150 design was inherited by Wren Skyships when AI's rigid division was split off (see below), and Wren went on to propose new metal-clads of varying sizes.Supersonic FedEx Model of the ConcordeConcorde: Tom had earlier in his career worked a concept team to utilize Concorde supersonic jets to fly packages internationally. One problem was that the emergency manual system for lowering the landing gear was amidship of the jet. The floor would have to be taken up, and pole inserted into a cranking type device to manually lower the gear. With freight on the aircraft this wasn't accessible to the pilots. The team came up with a gear concept that would allow the pilots to take up the floor and manually deploy the gear from the cockpit. A major issue was that to put a cargo door in the Concorde, 3 more bulkheads had to be installed. These jets were going to be leased for 10 years. A requirement by the French was that FedEx had to return the jets in original condition. We would have to remove the cargo door, remove the bulkheads, and relocate the emergency gear extension system back amidships.Aircraft Carrier Freighter: Another design was a fast ocean going large freighter called Fastship. This ocean going freighter would be 1000 feet long. Mr. Smith hired a naval architect named Reuven Leopold and Tom was assigned to be his FedEx rep. They actually had a 40 foot model of the ship designed for testing. To test the design and obtain a hull classification for insurance purposes, they shipped the model to Das Veritas, Norway. It passed all of the sea keeping tests but one, breaking into two pieces when a humongous quartering wave hit it.Tom looked at extremely fast submarines, sea planes, wing-in-ground effect aircraft and many other concepts that FedEx could consider for new businesses.I asked Tom Bullion and Chuck Graham the following questions:What were the most enjoyable times working at FedEx?Chuck: I enjoyed up until the last five years I was there. I especially got satisfaction when we had to work 20 hours straight to fix something but got immediate satisfaction in our success and in meeting the customer's expectations.Tom: I also enjoyed almost all my career except maybe the last 5 years. I really enjoyed my director in Operations Research but, the executive management culture had changed from taking care of the customer to reporting to the stockholder – the new corporate world is not conducive to entrepreneurs. I especially enjoyed working in FedEx Aeronautics, and working for Allan McArtor.Who are the people you most appreciated at FedEx?Chuck: Pete Wilmott, he provided stable financing and a level head and pushed for a high service level. It provided stability for us. And Jim Barksdale. He put the People element back into the company.Tom: Pete Wilmott, Art Bass, Vince Fagan, Jim Barksdale and of course Mr. Smith. Art Bass and Jim Barksdale kept the company and upper management on an even keel.

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/20/2014

More Comments from Tom: I also worked on a couple other things that might be of interest to the older guys. I was hired as the Director of Training opening new stations around the country. Too much travel and I volunteered to help Carl William and Mike Basch to introduce The Star System (Systemwide tracking and recording system). This was an OCR capable airbill generated by a gas credit card type machine made by Addressograph & Multigraph. I then helped Wes Terry break the revenue functions out of data processing and started the Billing System. This is where I met my lifelong friend Tom McNeal. He was hired as the Credit & Collections manager. We fought like tigers and became best of friends. After ZapMail, Ted Weise ask me to start a container program for the B-727 program and I was the first “Can King” or Container Control or ULD manager – many coats same lousy job! 1 ·

FedEx Trivia Quiz 3/20/14:FedEx's 1st scanning device was a Norand HHT scanner (similar to grocery store scanners with a wand)

.a. How did the scan data get from the scanner to the mainframe(ie Cosmos)?

b. What was the project called, and who was in charge of the rollout?FedEx's 2nd scanning device was the HHP SuperTracker.

c. How did scan data get from the SuperTracker into Cosmos?

d. What was the project called and who was in charge of the rollout?

John Toscano3/20/2014

In COSMOS IIa, the Smartbase by Norand was used to Xmit the scan data to COSMOS. For COSMOS IIb, the PC Base was used as well as DADs for xmission. Rollouts were mostly managed by the folks in Harry Dalton's group.

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/20/2014

Answers: FedEx's 1st scanning device was a Norand HHT scanner (similar to grocery store scanners with a wand) .

a. How did the scan data get from the scanner to the mainframe(ie Cosmos)? Norand provided a rack, and the HHT's were placed in the rack to charge and it dialed a 3705 front end processor to transmit the scan information. Calls were long distance. Les Wilcox and Winn Stephenson wrote the assembly code for the mainframe collection program.

b. What was the project called, and who was in charge of the rollout? Project was COSMOS IIa, and rolled out by Tom Bullion. Jimmy Sowell was later tagged with task to process the equipment. Only packages in the stations and in the hub were scanned. FedEx's 2nd scanning device was the HHP SuperTracker.

c. How did scan data get from the SuperTracker into Cosmos? Norand provided a PC called the SmartBase. Software for the IBM side of the device was from SSI and modifed by the Comm Soft group. SuperTrackers were placed in QuadRacks to charge and upload in station scans. A shoe rack was placed on the DADS device so the courier could insert the SuperTracker. Pickup and Delivery scans were then transmitted wirelessly from the Van to the Dads Processor(Digital Equipment PDP-11), and then up the SNA link to COSMOS.

d. What was the project called and who was in charge of the rollout? Project was called COSMOS IIB and was led by Harry Dalton. Jim Tollefson's group in COS did the scan processing. Jim Turpin and David Dietzel under Harry were the leads for the rollout. Packages were scanned in station and at the customers location.

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/20/2014

Later, when the Norand Smartbase was probably at end of life, the CommSoft Group under Les Wilcox integrated the PCBase, which was a PC plus an SNA comm card and a link to the quadracks; These were rolled out to replace the thousands of Norand Smartbases.

John Toscano3/20/2014

Interesting.

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/20/2014

...and history gets convoluted a little bit as my memory fades with time After the PCBase was put together in Bill Stranges group..I think; further development for the Smartbase & PCBase was transferred to Jimmie Willis in COS..who I think reported to John Toscano. Kurt Wulff took Bill's mgr slot after his passing. There was another reorg, as there always were, and Kurt Wullf, Jimmie Willis, & Miley Ainsworth were put under my org, and I reported to Les Wilcox for a month. I was the only report to Les. I was promoted to MD Network Engr, and left the group, and don't remember the history after that much. But there was a spinoff of the PCbase and a device that Jim Turpin's group had put together, and that device became PSCAN and the first manager of that group was Kevin Lindholm in COS. 2 ·

Gary Holmes was noted for working very fast, when he worked, and talking with friends much of the time; His work output was still good, his speed could make up for his talkative-ness. Gary was working on an application for Powership. Back then, it would take 30 minutes to compile his program. So he started his compile and spent 30 minutes somewhere, talking to anyone he could find. He didn't think of this as slouching off...he was waiting for his program to be compiled so he could test changes. But Alas, technology caught up with him. He received a newer and faster PC. It took only 10 minutes to compile the same program...so he could only talk 10 minutes before he had to go back to work. So his complaint, verbally made to everyone, including management, was that technology was cutting into his talking time.... note: Gary is still in a semi-comatose state from the bicycle accident two years ago, where an angry driver plowed into a group of bikers in California, injuring two of the bicyclists. He was moved to West Memphis Ark, last year to make it easier for his family to care for him. 2 ·

They talked just like weathermen on TV. We had four of them then.a. Why does FedEx have it's own meterologists on staff? b. Guess how many meteorologists are on staff today?

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/1/2014

a. Whenever the launch of flights happens, typically the forecast for the destination airport weather was done many hours before the flight, so it isn't as accurate as it can be, and sometimes you can't take off if the forecast is bad at the destination. If you have your own meteorologists, they can check/re-evaluate the conditions at the destination at launch and change the forecast if conditions permit. So having your own meteorologists can save you a lot of time and money.

b. As of 2013, there were over 14 meteorologists on staff.

Jim Bentley4/1/2014

Jimmy Burk!

Marsha Terry Rider4/1/2014

I remember the contest and seeing the results on line. Wasn't it some family based in New Jersey?

Leroy Hebert4/1/2014

Don't know but I had my two sons at one time

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/2/2014

I don't have a way to fact check this, but if my memory serves, there was a contest to see what family had the most members working at FedEx, and the winning family included Vic Trouy, an ITD manager (who I think worked on development of the Super Tracker). Vic has since retired. (He has 15 children, 2 of his sons currently work in IT in Larry Netter's org, a 3rd took the first package and went back to school to be a dentist; 1 of his daughters worked in the Hub during college). Subject: Some Ancient Telecom History

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/10/2014

Some Ancient Telecom HistoryI visited Ancel Hankins yesterday while he recovers, and spent some time rehashing Telecom history at FedEx.Around 1977, Ancel was working at DCC in Memphis, but did some contract work at FedEx. At that time there were only 2 people who worked in telecom. One was Vernitta Rogers. There was no real Network Control. All modems were mostly under the computer room floor. There were no patch panels, data scopes, or other test equipment. If something didn't work you called the phone company. Everything ran off the Burroughs mainframe.Ancel put together a plan and they purchased the above equipment and were then able to better diagnose if the network was working and where problems were.Jack Cochran was a manager and handled voice communications.Ancel was soon after hired as a manager of Data Engineering in 1977. Charlie Brandon hired Larry Lake as Sr. Mgr and he soon became a Director. FedEx then bought Cooks IT staff and Jim Barksdale took Charlie Brandons SVP position(when Charlie decided he didn't want to manage a large IT shop), and JLB then hired John Schwarzmann as Sr. Mgr over the following managers: voice(Gary Ragsdale), data(Ancel Hankins), radio(Jim Moore), admin(Susan Wright) and installations(Chuck Jowers). Larry Lake left in the early 80's which opened a Director slot which was filled by Winn Stephenson.

This photo was taken just before a monsoon hit Bristol. It poured down rain like cats and dogs for 15 minutes. We huddled under the awning that was attached to kevin humphrie's motor home when it started raining...then all of a sudden, the awning retracted as the downpour began...and we all got wet...there wasn't enough room for 20+ people in his camper. It seems that his RV came with an automatic retractable awning..whenever wind speeds got too high...so we just got soaking wet.

David was one of the pioneers in developing FedEx systems starting in 1977 to 1984. He was hired by Steve Steilling because he knew programming and accounting, and Steve wanted an expert in both. He started writing programs on the Burroughs and then transitioned to the IBM system with the Cook IT buyout. He was the one who coded Prism to recognize your birthday and put a message on the green screen. He remembered project Butterfly? when the young ops research group would run their models. They would make an announcement that the model was running at 2:15...then everyone would go home, because the systems were useless, it was so slow. Here is a list of some of David's projects below. He left FedEx for ATKearney and now has his own firm in Dallas:IT from 1978 to 19801. Converted a Honeywell Fixed Asset system to Burroughs.2. Converted the Burroughs Fixed Asset system above to IBM (after FedEx bought the Cook data center)3. Developed and implemented online IMS-based Purchasing System4. Converted Casper HR system to online IMS-based Human Resource System (I forget what we called it). Had some fun with this. When the folks in HR logged in, the system would greet them by name, wish them a Happy Birthday and also provide holiday greetings.Cost Accounting 1980 to 19821. Standardized & automated Landing Fee Reports to 100+ airports using SAS to integrate multiple data sources2. Taught the entire department how to use Mark43. Used SAS & Mark4 to automated 80+% of Cost Accounting reporting4. Used SAS to develop the first standard cost report for each serviceLogistics 1982 to 19841. Led a team (user and IT) that designed and Implemented LOGOS, the logistics management system used for order processing, warehousing and inventory management in Distribution Services and Ground Support Services.David s

Question: does anyone know what FedEx's gun policy is currently? when I left you couldn't carry a gun into premises of course, but you also couldn't have one in your car, even if parked on public property from a building that FedEx rents. Just asking after latest violence at a fedex facility

Don Rose4/30/2014

Last I heard was that the policy had not changed. No guns in car.

Jere Bledsoe4/30/2014

I remember when the first gun policy was written. One of the system development manages brought a gun to a meeting and laid it on the conference table as a joke. It scared the hell out of some of the attendees. Thus, we got the first gun policy. DR, do you remember that?

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/30/2014

Jere do you remember about what year that was?

Buddy Johnson4/30/2014

That was called 'gunfight at OK corral', involving Hubert Fisher and Ray White. That was in 1980-81. 1 ·

Jere Bledsoe4/30/2014

Jimmy, I really don't remember the exact year. It was sometime shortly after 1978 since I do remember who did it and when they joined FedEx. Maybe Don will remember better.

Jere Bledsoe4/30/2014

Okay, Buddy knew. I wasn't going to name names but Buddy did.

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/30/2014

I do remember in the early 80's at 2955 republican, someone came into the building at night looking for his girlfriend..with a gun.... a fence went up shortly after, and a security guard placed at the front desk.

My team was working on a $65M project and needed to write multiple po's and contracts and needed backup plans. There were over 200 purchases to be made, and I didn't need to have 3 bids on every item, that her dept required; we didn't have the time. FWS had relayed that the project timelines couldn't slip, and the project wouldn't fail. Two of Edith's mgrs were giving conflicting requirements and adding bureacracy to the project. I requested a meeting with Edith & her directors & managers. As she listened to what I needed, her two managers suddenly started arguing with each other... Edith immediately recognized a dysfunctional attitude, and said something like "Jimmy, I need a few minutes with my staff alone. I'm sure we can work something out to meet your needs" About an hour later, we reconvened, and Edith relayed what they could do with the rules, and how her department would meet the needs of the project....her management team sat silently... Edith was a class act, and she acted immediately when needed and her staff responded after that mtg. 7 ·

Re: Larry Netter:After more than 30 years of service to FedEx, Larry Netter has made the decision to retire effective June 15, 2014. His incredible legacy will be remembered for many years to come.Larry started working at FedEx in 1983 as a Sr. Manager to lead a group that supported Zap Mail. This organization eventually became known as Technology Services in 1986 when the team began supporting additional equipment throughout the company.During his tenure at FedEx, Larry was responsible for implementing desktop management and the first enterprise email system. He also spent one year on special assignment in the United Kingdom and Europe building a service organization. In 2002, Larry assumed the role of VP of Technology Services, leading the largest IT team at FedEx for more than 12 years. While he is a four-time FedEx Five Star Award winner, he is most known for his philanthropic spirit in the community. Larry led the American Liver Foundation of the Mid-South’s annual golf tournament for many years, and he could always be found with a hammer in his hand on the first day of FedEx Habitat for Humanity builds. He was a 10-year board member of a non-profit school, a supporter of Forever Young, and started a laptop donation program for Operation Homefront in support of military families and veterans.I have worked closely with Larry over the years, and I have always appreciated his dedication to the company and his passion to put his team and customers first. He will be missed. Please join me in wishing Larry well on all of his future adventures!Kevin

I can mark this one off my "Bucket List". That is, flying on the EAA's 1929 Ford Tri-motor vintage airliner. It was at West Memphis Airport, Arkansas today and the 25 minute flight was just awesome. I sat in the right seat next to the pilot and there were 9 other passengers on-board. I told the pilot that he made it look so easy to fly. Henry Ford's company built 199 of these airplanes between 1926 and 1933, and this particular airplane was # 146 off the production line. Enjoy the pix I took. It's powered by three 450 HP Pratt & Whitney radial engines, and the cruise speed was about 90 mph indicated. It only took about 600 feet of runway to become airborne. That wing has an awesome lift design.

FedEx Trivia QuizTRUE...or FALSEBefore FedEx launched and built a Ground network ,FedEx executives visited UPS headquarters and offered them the opportunity to deliver the express packages with UPS trucks?

Deby Abbott Jolley6/17/2014

I'm guessing: False.

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/18/2014

Answer: TRUE; FWS looked at options to shortcut the process to build a ground network; Mike Basch set up a meeting with the CEO of UPS. UPS wasn't interested in overnite deliveries. This was good for FedEx.

Deby Abbott Jolley6/18/2014

Interesting! I was thinking that this would have been off-limits because of the monopoly situation - but I guess there were more carriers in the mix at that time.

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/19/2014

Correct Answer is E. Customers initially couldn't understand the sales pitch about why it is better to send a package from Los Angeles to San Francisco...via Memphis, our Central Hub. The sales pitch was changed to: we owned our own jets & vans and that is why we were more reliable than other carriers vs emphasizing everything going thru Memphis. All the other items in the list happened.

Heads up on calling Cigna Tel-Drug. If you should accidentally reverse the exchange part of the 800 number (should be 835 not 853) you will be prompted to answer if any household member is over 50. If yes you are offered a FREE medic alert necklace. At first I thought it was some special Cigna program but fortunately realized something was amiss so didn't give my name. Of course nothing is really FREE. And of course now they have my cell number so will probably bug the heck out of me. How convenient their phone number is so close to Cigna's drug number.

10 Things You Might Not Know About FedEx Billionaire Fred Smith This story appears in the February 10, 2014 issue of Forbes.Fred Smith’s overnight delivery service was anything but an overnight success. But now he’s worth $2.3 billion, FedEx FDX +0.34% ships more than 10.2 million packages daily in 220 countries, and, while UPS left gift givers stranded this Christmas, Smith’s company soared. Below, 10 things you might know about Smith, the latest prosperous story in our new Path to Success feature:

1. CHILDHOOD CHALLENGE Born in 1944, Smith is crippled by a bone disease as a small boy and watches sports from the sidelines. Regains his health by age 10, becomes an excellent football player and learns to fly at 15.

2. THE BIG IDEA Enrolls at Yale in 1962. A disagreement with a professor leads to his developing the business model for an express EXPR -0.9% delivery service. Decides it will need to carry small, high-?priority packages at night, when airports aren’t congested.

3. G.I. Fred Joins the Marines in 1966 and does two tours in Vietnam. Narrowly survives a Vietcong ambush after losing his helmet, grenade and gun. Brings his attacker down by aiming at his head but then hitting him in the knee.

4. TAKEOFF Returns to the idea he developed at Yale and founds Federal Express in 1971 after raising a then astonishing $91 million in venture capital. Operations start in 1973.

5. A BIG GAMBLE In his first 26 months in business he racks up $29 million in losses. Desperate to pay bills, he flies to Las Vegas, wins $27,000 at blackjack and wires it back to FedEx. Yet by 1976 FedEx is flying smoothly and bringing in $75 million in revenue, though it remains heavily indebted. It goes public in 1978.

6. TURBULENCE Looks east to Asia in 1989 with the $880 million purchase of the Flying Tiger cargo line. Integrating the two is difficult, and FedEx’s net income drops from $185 million in 1989 to just $6 million in 1991.

. PACIFIC OVERTURES In 1998 introduces the only next-business-day express cargo service from Asia to the U.S. It pays off. An international priority delivery brings in more than three times as much revenue as a domestic one.

8. DIVERSIFYING Buys Kinko’s for $2.4 billion in 2004 to compete with UPS’ recently purchased Mail Boxes Etc. Kinko’s is later reorganized into FedEx Office.

9. THE CRASH The Great Recession batters FedEx. The company barely ekes out a $98 million profit in 2009, down from $2 billion two years earlier.

10. ALOFT AGAIN Belt-tightening, international growth and e-commerce help the company surmount the financial doldrums. Posts a $1.6 billion profit on record-high sales in 2013.Reach Abram Brown at abrown@forbes.com.Here is the direct article in Forbes:

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/23/2014

History tidbit: If I remember correctly, Ancel called this project MARS...but I don't remember what it stood for. FedEx transitioned to Paradyne modems to enable a dial backup scenario to the stations when there were outages. ATT, who provided the initial modems, could not provide a backup solution due to FCC rules at the time,,, but if you provided your own modems, you could use local phone lines to keep the dispatches flowing to the station.

FedEx Trivia Quiz:The FedEx Supertracker plan initially consisted of purchasing 10,000 units from two different manufacturers. The smaller of the two companies that built SuperTrackers won the first purchases and the second company got none of the order.a. Why didn't the original plan go thru? b. Who were the two companies, and which one built the first deployed SuperTrackers? c. What contract was the losing manufacturer given?

Jim McBryde6/23/2014

Nec? I know they did the first supermeters.

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/25/2014

a. Why didn't the original plan go thru? it was at the end of zapmail, money was tight, and there wasn't enough to have two suppliers b. Who were the two companies, and which one built the first deployed SuperTrackers? Norand and HHP(HandHeld Products) and HHP was chosen c. What contract was the losing manufacturer given? Norand was given the contract to build the smartbase and quadracks to charge STs and connect to the network.

Dave Hansen6/25/2014

Lets not forget that the contract to install them was given to Cetacia. They were a Memphis sound (speaker) rental company most known for having the 2nd largest Marshall amplifier inventory in the United states.

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/25/2014

Dave, which contract(s) did Cetacea receive? There were at least two different installations..if I remember correctly. the first was to modify the DADS FMT terminal to put a shoe on it for the ST to send scans in; and the second was the Norand smartbase and quadrack installations at the stations.

Starting with electrons, volts, circuits and IC chips, he was tutored in data communications, voice communications, packet switching, PBXs, ACD's, System Signalling #7, ATT switches, fast packet, video, ISDN and a host of other things. After a full day of many speakers, he said he was in awe. He hadn't really known what all was involved involved in a Telecom department. He thanked us all. After his first month at Sprint, he called me and thanked my group again, but said that the company was in such confusion, that his tenure at FedEx had prepared him to straighten things out. Question Someone who recently retired asked this question...and I am relaying in case anyone did have the answer. The person was within 18 months of 65; when they retired they got an optional COBRA packet to keep their FedEX insurance for 18 months...which seems to be $150 a month cheaper (for employee & spouse) than the FedEx retiree insurance. Several days later they got the FedEx Retiree packet. The COBRA option also had a $220 cost which could be put into a Health Care Savings Plan Employee was trying to find out pros and cons and why the difference in the prices and couldn't get an answer from the hotline. Also, I questioned, if you took the COBRA option, you would never actually be on the FedEx Retiree Health insurance, and would you get the $75 a month supplemental thing the company provides at age 65 for the Medicare supplement. If anyone has answers just post here.

Marsha Terry Rider7/1/2014

Exactly which hotline did they call? They should be able to get their answer from Fedex Benefits Center at 800-888-5622. Is that the number they called?

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/1/2014

I think they called the retirement number on the packet they received. they just couldn't get an explanation if the two packages were equivalent or not.

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/18/2014

My friend got his answers. The Cobra package for 18 months is the same insurance as the premier or premium FedEx retiree health insurance. It in effect just delays when you go to the FedEx retiree plan. It is cheaper, but he could not get an answer as to why. And it doesn't affect your ability to receive the $75 supplement towards a Medicare plan.

speaking of doctors.... How would Dr. Burk like to be referred to???? I gave the first presentation at the first ZComm meeting and about every month thereafter. FWS chaired and the kingpins of the company attended monthly. Ted Weise was then president of FedEx Express. As I answered questions at the end of the presentation, FWS several times referred to me as Dr. Burk which didn't phase me as he had done this occasionally before. I had taught classes at CBU but didn't have a doctorate, only an Bachelors in Electrical Engr.... but he was allowed to call me whatever he wanted. A few hours later my admin gets a call from Teds office."'Mr Weise needed to send correspondence to Dr. Burk and he wanted to know how he wanted to be referred to...in the correspondence....?" Kaye didn't hesitate to answer...he wants to referred to as JIMMY or JIMMY BURK..... She did think it was nice of them to ask though...... ·

Don Beethe7/8/2014

dunno, only deal with Linux and HPUX nowdays.. Haven't seen AIX in 10 years :)

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/9/2014

The answer may be all of these databases were used since Don deployed DB2 on linux systems. The answer...I thought was DB2. DB2 is usually associated with IBM mainframes, but can be loaded on open platforms. Oracle is the predominant DB at FedEx now. Informix was the most commonly used database initially starting with SCO Xenix Sybase was used heavily by Chronos and in software only FedExShip products

Don Beethe7/9/2014

sybase was also used by LSSI. Oldtimers will recognize ziploc. LSSI is the distributed ziploc app.

Charles Morgan7/9/2014

We also used INGRES on some early SCO boxes too, as it too was bundled with SCO in some releases

Dress Policy: Wearing ShortsSomehow, someway, the COS folks got to wear shorts to work. The then vp allowed it, the SVP who lived elsewhere said it wasn't going on, but it was.I had about 40 people in COS reporting into my org. On a visit I met with the group and the subject of wearing shorts came up. I figured they were going to ask to wear shorts...but our SVP Winn Stephenson wouldn't allow it, so I was just waiting for the question...the Question: Could you stop this wearing shorts on the campus?????I was somewhat shocked and asked why?the Answer: it would be nice to wear shorts on very hot days, but some of these people wearing shorts are just gross in shorts. we can't take it any more...so, I responded, that I would ask the VP who allowed shorts, and the SVP who dis-avowed that anyone was wearing shorts, to stop the wearing of the short.Dress Policy: wearing hose(for ladies)On another visit to Orlando where I had 50 people in my org the subject of dress code came up. I assumed again it was shorts, but was wrong again.A nice lady employee asked if I could do something about the policy requiring ladies to wear hose.Well I didn't know that ladies had to wear hose, but in some policy somewhere, that was the case.It was approaching 100 degrees that day and humid in Orlando.I gave an executive order that they did not have to wear hose. I probably didn't have any authority to change anything....but it was just common sense. The ladies were happy....still no requests for shorts....

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/16/2014

Don is Correct. Priority delivery was changed from noon to 10:30am. It was also part of the strategy to get ready for Zapmail 1 pickup and delivery of faxes. DADS (wireless dispatch terminals in vans) was also accelerated as part of Early. The original thoughts were that DADS would roll out to the top 30 cities. With zapmail pickup of a document, take to station to scan/transmit to another station for delivery...required fast dispatching to all couriers.

Linda Cook Thorn7/16/2014

Oops! I sure thought that is what we called the service for early morning New York locs!!

I was working as a secretary in FWS' office when the producer of Designing Women called to get the Las Vegas story straight from him for their upcoming segment. FWS came out of his office and told us the details of the trip and I couldn't even tell you his actual story now.....too many stories/incidents to remember! But, I do know that even after getting the story straight from him, when they aired that show they made up their own numbers once again!

Jere Bledsoe7/17/2014

I believe Don Rose is correct on all counts. FedEx may have carried mail out of Little Rock before the package operation began but the first revenue packages came through Memphis. Also, Barksdale didn't immediately come to FedEx at the Cook "merger". Edited ·

Dan Goss7/17/2014

Dan Goss Jimmy let's get the record straight about question 3. On Fred's first visit to COS, he hosted a dinner for all employees. During the course of the evening, Fred came over and sat next to me and told this story to everyone at my table: He was in Chicago talking to a potential investor which he thought was going to go through. It did not and he returned to the airport, and looking at the Departures board the next flight out was to Vegas. He said he had about a hundred dollars in his pocket and the only gambling he ever did was in the Marine Corps in Viet Nam. He said he built his hundred dollars well above the $27K mark, but stopped playing and walked away with $27K. He said it didn't make or break the company, but it was a good omen of things to come. I heard it first hand from Fred in '78. 1 ·

Don Rose7/17/2014

Dan, the part about Chicago is dead on. But I'm sure I heard Fred state that there were investors in Vegas that he also went to see. The $27K is also what he said. Edited ·

Dan Elliot7/17/2014

Well, #1 is kinda of true. In the last interview he was asked about it, he said, "I don't really remember what the grade was, maybe a C, but I passed!"

Peter Dangerfield7/17/2014

We carried 'greenies' for the USPO out of Little Rock while the pilots were getting their Falcon Rating and we were fitting the cargo doors. We had to hand load the 70 lbs greenies packed with first class mail. You haven't lived until bent over in the cargo hull while packing the aircraft full. Pilots, mechanics, ground crew all got involved in loading the aircraft when finished with their primary task, great Purple Blood back then. 3 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/17/2014

Very good everyone! F 1. Fred Smith got a C on his college paper on building a package airline. as stated, FWS couldn't remember what he got, so he said he probably got a C as he usually did F 2. His professor did not like the paper. The professor was interviewed before his death, and wasn't against the idea, but thought it would never work, due to government regulations and bureaucracy. The professor couldn't remember the grade either. F 3. Fred Smith took the payroll, went to Las Vegas and won $20K to make the payroll. as Dan did, I heard the story from FWS also; He was in Chicago to meet with investors and couldn't get a loan extension, feeling sad, he went to the airport and Las Vegas pops up on the monitor and he took off there; he used his own money, & did apply his winnings to the payroll T 4. FedEx employees were asked not to cash their checks for a few days. absolutely true T 5. At times, FedEx pilots used their credit cards to pay for fuel for the falcons. absolutely true, as did some couriers pay for fuel T 6. The board tried to oust FWS from the company in the early days. FWS had legal issues, repayment of loans was always a crisis, FWS was young and the Board, mostly represented by the investors, thought someone older might help the company...so they hired a General T 7. FWS used his trust money to start the company, and his sisters trusts, without telling them. This went to trial and FWS was vindicated. He was the overseer of the trusts and had power to invest as he thought wise. F 8. FedEx started the flying of packages out of Little Rock. as Don wrote, first package delivery was out of Memphis...although there were charter flights, mail and check deliveries out of Little Rock F 9. Jim Barksdale came to FedEx with the Cook IT buyout. JimB came later, when Charlie Brandon decided he didn't want to run a large IT shop. Edited ·

Sherry Little7/17/2014

Fred told a bunch of us the same story that Dan Goss mentioned when we were invited up to the 3rd floor conference room at the "pink palace" for a 25th anniversary for some 'ole timers' of the company.

his name is Chris and he did absolutely nothing at Fedex. Just kidding but he did support our passport network.

Shirley Lovelace Williams7/28/2014

How could anybody forget Chris Albers?

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/28/2014

My first words to Chris Albers: "I'm going to have you fired!" ----------------- During zapmail the Tandem nodes would have to be periodically reset and rebooted to update the operating system. There were 12 nodes and this was usually done on Sunday nights. The mgr of ops came to me and said he would like to take over that responsibility. I didn't want to do this function, and said OK, but let me give you 5 of the nodes this weekend and make sure you have the procedures down, then you can have all of them. Sunday night I did 7 nodes, the Ops group did 5. I came in around 9am monday and was met at the door of 2955 by a group of ops guys. They wanted me to know that 7 of the zapmail nodes were working and 5 were hosed and they couldn't figure out why. They also wanted me to know that it was a coincidence that the 5 hosed nodes were the ones they had rebooted. I couldn't get network access to any of the 5 systems, so I dialed the node tech in Houston who was Chris P. Albers. I called in 3 times and got 'Hold Please...' and was immediately put on Hold, never to return. The 4th call, I immediately said, "I'm going to have you fired!"....before he could get out the first word... There was a pause, followed by 'Yes sir....what can I do for you?' I told him who I was and that he wasn't to answer any more phone calls and only listen to me...and to call me on xxxx number if we got disconnected. He listened intently. I had him reset the system so I could dial in and determined in about 10 minutes that the Ops group had practiced their procedures on these nodes and rebooted not once but several times...but they hadn't done clean shutdowns. There were duplicate processes running everywhere causing conflicts. We did a clean shutdown and restart to fix the problems. I wasn't in management, but had decided to tell Chris he was getting fired was the only way to get him to listen. He later worked for me in Network Engineering and was a crazy but hardworking guy from Texas. Edited · 1 ·

FedEx Trivia Quiz:In the mid 90's, FedEx had a $2500/month contract to process checks and taxes to local/state entities around the country. The company used was processing about $7B from many companies, but was using the monies and float to do $100's of millions in investments. FedEx determined it's liabilities were a $13M loss and it sued the company. This brought about some of the tightest financial procedures ever seen at FedEx including some capital requests needing 13 signatures to be processed. What was the name of the company that FedEx sued?

Fedex's first endeavor into check clearing was early eighties. Bags of checks were brought into Memphis from Federal Reserve Banks, carried in cockpit of the aircraft, off loaded first , transported to a dedicated facility near the airport, sorted checks and returned them to outbound flights, allowing a 24 hour turnaround in clearing the checks. This created a tremendous float which was used by the Reserve for other financial endeavors. Dick Winter and I installed a modem and asynchronous multiplexor to provide higher speeds and error correction to connect to their computer in support this operation. I first met Chuck Winston on the elevator returning from the installation. Our relationship would prove to be a contentious one for as long as I stayed at Fedex.

FedEx Trivia:

a. Around 1986 a movie came out that got all the FedEx pilots and former pilots in a frenzy. I was in the building with Alan McArtor, Gil Mook & Jim McKinney all fighter jet pilots, and you couldn't walk down the hallway without hearing about this movie and their own combat exploits.Name this movie?

b. In mid 1990's a scifi tv series came out that a lot of people watched. Jimmy Burk had a 10' satellite dish and could get this weekly show a week ahead of time. He recorded it and brought it in monday mornings. About 10-20 people would bring their lunches and eagerly watch it.Name this series?

c. Movie featuring FedEx where the producers offered to let FedEx be in the movie if they paid an advertising fee(I heard $10M, but not sure); FedEx turned down the offer, but the producers decided the movie wouldn't work featuring our competitor UPS. So FedEx was featured, for free.Name this move?

Such a nice tribute to Denise's Mom in Saturday's Commercial.

Jimmy Glenn Burk8/24/2014

Jeanette Heinz Wood, 78, was born in 1936 in Memphis TN to Ras and Charlene Heinz. She was a daddy’s girl from the start, a handful by all accounts, full of fun, mischief, and daring. Although she lived all over Memphis, she always loved the stability of her grandmothers’ homes—filled with family and lots of cousins. Jeannie married her Treadwell High School sweetheart, Don, and began a life building a home and raising their four children. She was the best mom, never failing to be the room mother, the pack mom, work the concession stands or even whip up the post prom breakfast. She showed unvarnished pride at her family’s small achievements, loving reproach for their failings, and an unbelievable ability to always know when one needed that extra attention day—home from school with Mom. We’ll never know all the secrets of life’s embarrassing moments that she carried. Don and Jeannie moved to Birmingham and made wonderful friendships and continued to enjoy the lives of their family. When the snarky, smart mouth teen years of her kids gave way to college, Jeannie returned to work to help with tuition. She excelled at her job at Farmer’s Home administration, even winning Federal Employee of the Year. They moved to Brentwood, Tennessee and fell in love with the laid back, country music lifestyle. Jeanette got such a kick out of meeting stars at work or out shopping or dining. When Don retired from BellSouth, they loved to travel together. While mostly including a loop to see family, they loved to take the scenic routes and explore new cities, histories, and cuisines. But Jeanette found her calling with her 10 grandchildren. There was no event too small or reason too silly to miss time with her grandchildren. She never lost the joy every visit with them brought. Don and Jeanette moved to Rosemark, TN six years ago to enjoy country living and be close to their daughter. Although in declining health, she never met a stranger and always showed gratitude and appreciation for the little things in her life. Jeanette is predeceased by her parents and her beloved sister Christy Heinz White. She is survived by her husband of more than 58 years Don Wood. She is also survived by her four children Denise Wood of Memphis, Bill (Teresa) Wood of Vestavia, AL, Mike (Patricia) Wood of Marietta, GA, and Kim Nourse of Madison, AL. Her devoted grandchildren are Ross (Andie) Nourse of Huntsville, AL, Autumn Nourse (Scott) Harris of Gainesville, FL, Eric Wood of Birmingham, AL, Brian, Kevin, and Christian Wood of Tuscaloosa, Al, Alexander Wood of Marietta, GA, Matthew Nourse of Madison, AL, and David and Anna Wood of Vestavia, AL. Arrangements are for visitation at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery on Sunday, August 24th at 1 p.m. with a service to follow at 2 p.m. The burial service will be private.Condolences may be offered at www.MemorialParkOnline.com - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/commercialappeal/obituary.aspx?n=jeanette-heinz-wood&pid=172216297&fhid=3693#sthash.pvOFYM3b.dpuf Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery - Memphis, TN memorialparkfuneralandcemetery.com

Two things come to mind. First, my youngest son when he was eleven sent a letter to Alan McArtor as part of a school project and he sent him a very nice letter back. Secondly when he was about 17 he was President of the Computer Club and asked for a tour for the group thru the GOCC. They were great and proud to show off their technology and talk about their careers.

Happy Birthday, today, to Bruce Lindow

Bruce did many unique things at Fedex. when the original supertrackers had continuous field issues, Bruce determined that the batteries were being overcharged causing them not to hold a charge. his group designed a battery hospital to charge correctly, and came up with 30 other improvements. when the supertracker ran out of memory for new apps, bruce, at home, built an interface to add flash memory which was added to all the trackers. when the vendor stopped production of the st's to force fedex to buy their new device which had less capability than the st, at a higher cost, Bruces dept reverse engineered the device, added a laser scanner and other new features and had 65,000 new ones built, they did the same thing for the DADS terminal. the vendor decided to force fedex to purchase new dads terminals and stop production of the current terminal and charge fedex $3600 per device vs $2000; plus the new terminals wouldnt work on our network. Again they reverse engineered the device and fedex had a huntsville manufacturer build 40,000 terminals at $600 each. and he and his dept accomplished many other things but my fingers are getting tired typing on this iphone from the Grand Canyon area.

Jimmy Glenn Burk9/9/2014

from Elizabeth Ward Blaylock: Bruce's staff was wonderful, talented and a lot of fun to work with. A few included Phil Smith, Lyle Ogle, Nancy Hinds, Clark Hinds, George Moore, Richard Dunn, Chris Naugle, Steve Clark, David Carlile, Sandy McCall, Tom Wainscott and many more that I'm hoping will be named by those on this list. Happy Birthday Bruce Lindow.

Bruce Lindow9/10/2014

Yes, I could add quite a few names, but I would feel bad 5 minutes later because I would remember more that I didn't list I am not talking about just people in my group, but equally important, people from other areas that were a vital part of making these projects successful.

History note: The organization charts above were a year or two after the Zapmail program was ended. Jim Moore was originally in Telecom but was transferred to Sat Systems to oversee a dish rollout. Jim McKinney & Jim Colson were transferred, with Jim Moore, to Winn's org as FedEx sought to place the thousands of people in positions. Two other directors transferred were Ray Grantham(who went to vehicle mx) and Jim Whitworth(transferred to SIS under Harry Dalton). Randy Roy retired and is a professor of Masters Degree programs at Arkansas State in Fayetteville. Jim Moore started his own wireless business, sold that company and works as a principal in it, in San Diego. Jim McKinney soon afterwards became the SVP over Air Ops. Jim McKinney, Jim Colson, and Jim Whitworth have unfortunately passed away.

Thanks for sharing this.

Interesting. Just written and talking about more buyouts but then refer to past buyouts?

Deby Abbott Jolley9/19/2014

That was a little confusing, wasn't it, Margaret? I think they were talking about the past buyouts in both cases - but it certainly wasn't clear.

I agree with Deby Abbott Jolley! Edited ·

Sammie Helton Butts9/19/2014

Wanna hear something spooky, Jimmy? Right after y'all left and we were headed to check-out, I couldn't believe it but there sat Larry Netter with his wife & son!! We were just talking about him too! He was fine & fit and full of.....ham & eggs. I tried to get him to agree to meet our crew there next Friday so that he could pick up the check but he politely demurred. So good to see old friends! Both you gentlemen looked happy & healthy!! 4 ·

FedEx Sightings 9/21/14:Went to Kroger to shop & ran into two old friends: Dewey Hemphill & Lydle SimpsonHave known Dewey since around 1974 where he was the Director of Computer Ops at DCC in Memphis. DCC had 2 Burroughs 6700 mainframes plus a Honeywell Multics mainframe. ( I taught myself Algol, Cobol & PL/1 on these systems.)Dewey & Don Sparks came to FedEx in the early 1980's to Revenue Systems working under Charlie Germano. Dewey worked in several FedEx divisions before he retired. He now lives in Lakeland, and teaches courses for the Univ of Arkansas-Fayetteville & the Univ of Memphis.Have known Lydle since the early 80's. He was a Manager in Systems development for many years. After retirement he served as vendor reps for several major FedEx IT suppliers. Lydle lives in Cordova

I know them both well. I used to run into Lydle now and then, but I haven't seen Dewey in many years.

Penny Hitchcock Hopper9/22/2014

r Glad to hear that they're both well.

Jimmy Glenn Burk9/22/2014

I first met Lydle around 1981. I was writing the DADS software, and across the hall from my office, Chuck Deiotte from COS set up an Apple II computer w/ a sony tv, a TI-810 printer and a 5" floppy drive. Lydle and Mark Ramsey were checking it out to program the Apple in Basic to solve a FedEx problem. Many customers were willing to give FedEx 100's and even 1000's of packages a week...but refused to fill out the airbills. The Apple II came on the scene and a database of the customers would be installed. The customers could then just select their customers, and voila ..pre-printed airbills were done for them. An example was a video tape company which would sent out 10's of thousands of videos each week, all weighing the same and packaged the same. So the Apple II became the first customer automation device and volumes continued to grow. Not sure if it was Lydle or Mark or both who did the initial programs. After COSMOS IIa was implemented, which was scanning packages at the hub and in/out of the stations...Mark added a routine to allow the apple II to dial the mainframe and then do tracking on all the customer deliveries. We (Cindy and I) expect to see Dewey at their 50th HS class reunion in a couple of weeks. Glad Lydle is also doing well. Worked in Sys Dev with him for many years, Lydle - hope your golf game is still kickin' butt!!!
