C; As I understand it, around 1993, the federal government changed the law about how companies accounted for the expense of retiree health benefits. Companies had to start putting this future expense on the books, so to speak. To do that, the company had to assign a set expense for the retiree benefit. Of course, since then, the cost of health care has increased. The amount of money FedEx allocated to retiree health care has been exceeded by the increased cost of health care so that is the reason that retirees pay more. At the time this change was made, 50% of the companies that had retiree health care dropped it from their benefits.

Ray's answer is correct. The regulatory board for CPA's recommended this change and the government accepted it....
b. About last year, FedEx went to higher deductible, much higher premiums and higher costs to the employees on health insurance. Why?
Dave is correct. The Affordable Care Act defined for companies the maximum they & employees could contribute to health care plans, and if they went over that amount, they were taxed at a 40% rate; this money went to subsidize citizens health care premiums and also went to hospitals in order for them to accept the plan. Either the government wanted everyone to have the same type of insurance or it was just another way to get money out of companies to subsidize premiums for others
c. The costs of FedEx health insurance for retirees & spouse (under the age of 65) is something like $500 or more a month, more than current employees. Why?
FedEx retirees can only keep FedEx insurance until they turn 65. FedEx contributes around $12K into an insurance pool and the employee contributes premiums into the same pool to pay for medical expenses. When an employee retires the company still contributes into the pool, but it is less than half of what they do for employees. The retiree has to make up the difference. About 9 years ago the premium was about $500/month(retiree & spouse). That premium is now between $900 and $1,200 a month.
d. What group of employees at FedEx has the lowest premium?
part time single hub employees
e. Which group of employees probably has the best insurance at FedEx?
Pilots, which is part of their contract. The contract also includes verbage to change that plan if it is defined as a 'cadillac' plan by the IRS.

FedEx considered buying the former Holiday Inn University facility when it came up for sale. The deal got all the way up to Jim Barksdale. Jim vetoed it saying he didn't want to get calls for guests complaining about cockroaches in their room.

Answers:
1. At one time FedEx considered putting a large sportsplex at Democrat so employees could work out
TRUE
2. At one time FedEx considered having a Florida private resort for employees to use with the idea the employees work very hard, and the company wanted an inexpensive place employees & families to relax
TRUE
3. At one time FedEx considered offering day care on site
TRUE, in Collierville location
4. At one time FedEx bid on flying private space shuttles
TRUE, the company FedEx Spacetran was formed to launch small satellites and bid on the Space Shuttle launches, which were originally planned to be one per week and NASA wanted to turn over the management of cargo and flights to private firms
5. At one time FedEx leased amusement parks, just for employees to use for special days
TRUE
6. FedEx turned down the option to be featured in the movie "CastAway"
TRUE, Initially FedEx turned down being the express company in the movie. Castaway producers wanted millions from FedEx to be 'featured' in the movie. After review, the producers decided that having UPS as the express company just wasn't going to work with the audience, and FedEx was back in the movie, at no cost other than providing the Superhub and shooting locations.
7. FedEx managerial training includes physical training to put emphasis on taking care of yourself
FALSE & TRUE, at one time for 2 days it was included. It was a short lived experiment. Up at 6am for manager training in Olive Branch for 45 minutes of aerobic exercise. Some of the field guys partied every night(as much as you could party in Olive Branch), and almost collapsed. The exercise was discontinued after the 2nd day....
8. FedEx has sold older jets, not gotten paid for them, and stole them back
TRUE, as the rumor goes
9. Fred Smith gambled the last funds Federal Express had, to raise money to continue operations
FALSE but somewhat TRUE, FWS didn't gamble company money, but did gamble, won and put that on making payroll.
He was leaving Chicago where he was pleading for another round of financing with a financial institution to keep the company going. He was turned down.
He was at Chicago O'hare airport and just looked up at the flights out and next one was Las Vegas. He jumped on that plane and in Las Vegas he won $25,000. He put that in the company's funds to be used to make payroll the following week. Times were tough with even pilots buying their own fuel on their credit cards,at times, when FedEx credit was denied for fuel at some locations.
10. FedEx moved its headquarters from Arkansas, because of better weather in Memphis
FALSE, Federal Express did move it's headquarters but not for weather. The Little Rock airport needed expansion for the companie's plan and Arkansas would not take a risk and fund the expansion. Officials in Tennessee, offered FedEx space on the MEM airport in National Guard Hangars and an airport bond issue to build the first sorting hub.

8. As I remember it, the planes were leased to a company in Las Vegas, who did not pay the lease. We sent flight crew to 'recover' the assets.

FedEx Trivia Quiz
In 1989 a disgruntled and fired courier wore a fedex like uniform and appeared on tv standing by a courier van, parked by a school, proclaiming that FedEx was cheating the government with one of it's services. ABC took the story big time and did something like a 20/20 segement on all of FedEx's abuses: Shipping munitions in vans that parked by schools, & not providing the government services that it paid for. ABC even went to a station to allow FedEx to comment on the accusations and no one would answer the door ( it didn't matter to ABC that it was a new, and unopened station that they went to for comment.) FedEx tried to get ABC to delay the broadcast until they could respond, but ABC refused and aired the segment
.a. What was the service called that FedEx offered to the government.?
b. What did FedEx do in response to the accusations?
Ray Lipham4/28/2016
Ray Lipham
FedEx offered a service called SSS, Signature Security Service, where a package was supposed to be in direct custody of an employee at all times and the there was a signature log that each employee signed as the custody passed from one employee to the next. Even the pilots signed the logs during the air transfer of the package. For the government, I believe there was a a slightly different version of the SSS feature called CSS, Constant Surveillance Service, that had a little bit higher requirements for security. (Maybe the package was supposed to remain in direct custody of the employee, like within eyesight, at all times). Anyway, I think FedEx discontinued both services shortly after the incident. Tom Oliver did the response on 20/20 and it wasn't his finest hour although it was a good response. The one thing that he said afterwards was that he regretted was that he didn't point out that a school bus parked next to the school, as was shown during the segment, had a tank of gasoline that was potentially more dangerous than the Class C explosive that was identified as a potential threat to the school. 20/20 made a big deal out of the fact that the Class C explosives were so dangerous that they were Cargo plane only and were not allowed to be transported on passenger aircraft. Gasoline was also a Cargo Only Hazardous Material but you could only ship a pint or less in a package. So a gallon of gasoline was considered to be too dangerous to even ship by cargo plane. At that time, FedEx also transported Class B explosives but only on an airport to airport basis. I think FedEx stopped carrying Class B explosives but continued carrying Class C explosives.
Ray Lipham4/28/2016
Ray Lipham
Also, I think that another allegation that the disgruntled ex-courier made on 20/20 was that the dispatchers and couriers made drug deals over the radio bands that FedEx used to communicate with couriers on their routes.

Ray Lipham4/28/2016

I just did a Google search to see if I could any record of the 20/20 segment on FedEx. I didn't but what I did find was that an ex-courier wrote a book with allegations that are totally unbelievable. It is both pathetic and humorous. It may not be the same courier and he may not be referring to the same 20/20 segment. https://www.bookdepository.com/Fred-Smiths-Fedex-Plantation-MR-Gary-Grant-Rullo-Sr/9780615636245

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/28/2016
Ray's answer is correct. Of the 200,000 shipments with the service over 2 years, only 182 govt shipments were suspect. Of those FedEx admitted they made mistakes on 27 shipments. The Defense Dept stopped using the service for 6 weeks, then wanted FedEx to allow them to start using the service again on probation. They had asked FedEx to offer the service even though it was a low volume product. As Ray commented, FedEx stopped the service with the government.
FedEx also stopped advertising with ABC for a while.

I just wanted to share these random photos with the group. They include the crew of flight 705, the flight that was hijacked by Auburn Calloway in 1994. The aftermath of the crash by one of our own in Tokyo Japan. The first 767 for Fed Ex in the factory at Everett Wa. Also a photo of the first African-American pilots hired by Fed Ex, Carrol Waters and Al Glenn. Plus a couple of others, enjoy!

I took the buyout Nov 2013. I signed the FedEx retirement pension kit I rec'd in late March 2016 to begin receiving my pension June 1, 2016. Got a phone call yesterday from FedEx benefits that my portable pension was miscalculated by $7k (not in my favor). It's hard to believe that they aren't compensating for their error. It's hard to believe a mistake like this. 2 weeks before I'm supposed to receive it. BTW, I'm 62. so the retirement age change should have nothing to do with me. Anyone else experience this?

I was told several times over the last several years; up until about 2 months ago that when I turn 55 I would be REQUIRED to start receiving - now, I'm told that was ALL incorrect information and that I do not have to start it at 55. I wonder how accurate the latest info is and wonder how many started at 55 because of bad information. (OR was all of that information different due to changes? )

I took the early retirement offer (the first one) in 2003. I received my final paycheck on Sept 30, 2003 and received my first pension check on Oct 1, 2003 (the next day). I was 1 month shy of my 55th birthday. The portable pension had not been in effect long before I retired, and I ended up getting at lump sum check for that a few months after I retired. I was also a 31 year employee. If you still have the paperwork that was submitted to you for your signature with the original figures quoted to you, then you should be able to hold benefits accountable for their error.

Medicare supplement subsidy: when you retire there are some qualifications to meet, but the company will deposit about $1020 for retiree and $1020 for spouse to be used for supplement, drug or dental/vision plans administered thru OneExchange.

What is OneExchange? How do we get more information on it? I haven't seen anything.
Gary Phillips5/27/2016
Gary Phillips
I hated dealing with oneexchange but they finally got my $85 even though I didn't use them to help with my health supplement. I went on disability so got in Medicare before 65. If you're under 65 on Medicare, the regular supplements (like F) are much higher. I had to go with Medicare Advantage which is a PPO and therefore Medicare pays nothing actually.
Don Rose5/27/2016
Don Rose
But that is only if you apply for it within 3 months of turning 65. I retired in late 2003 and had never heard of this subsidy until a few months ago, and I've been on Medicare 2 1/2 years. The benefits books stop coming after you retire, or at least mine did, and I never knew about it.

Subject: Although there have been several posts to this group that explains why Retiree Health Insurance cost ...
Ray Lipham5/29/2016
Although there have been several posts to this group that explains why Retiree Health Insurance costs so much more than Employee Health Insurance, the explanation has often been buried in long chain of comments. Today I just happened to come across a 1993 memo from FedEx Personnel that explains the reason for the difference so I'm posting it as a PDF. In a nutshell, starting in 1994, FedEx had to start recognizing the cost of future retiree health expense as a current expense even if an employee was 20 years away from retirement. To book the expense, FedEx had to assign a value to that expense and the value that was assigned to that expense was 150% of the current (1994) health care costs. Essentially, the retiree health expense was capped in 1994 but health care costs continued to increase. Since the companies contribution was capped and since health care costs have continued to increase, the retiree has had to pick up more of the cost of the health care insurance. From the memo, it appears that the company can increase the cap and I would not be surprised if the cap has not been increased in the last 20 years. However, since the expense is projected for many years in the future, even a small increase in the cap would have a substantial impact on the books and management does not like the color of red ink. Incidentally, about half of all companies that offered retiree health care prior to 1994 dropped it in 1994 because of this change. OK, that's my understanding of the higher cost of retiree health care. Maybe someone who is more financially literate than I can provide a more precise answer. Still, I have found FedEx Retiree Health Care to be the best deal available this side of age 65. If anyone knows of a better deal that does not involve getting another job, I want to hear about it.
Jimmy Glenn Burk5/29/2016
All the above true.
And below are changes and reasons as I understood them.
1. FedEx changed who could get Retiree Health Insurance due to an IRS accounting change:
As stated above, The national group that sets accounting standards decided that companies had to book future expenses(like projected insurance costs for employee retirement) for employee insurance each year in their accounting practices. For that reason, FedEx then changed it's practices that you had to be at the company 20 years before getting the retiree life insurance option(for newly hired employees). Previously you could have started work at Federal Express at age 50, worked 5 years and retired, and could get health insurance at age 55(which was probably $200 a month then).
2. Around 1994 FedEx fixed it's subsidy for retirees in the future.
At the time the employee paid something like $250 a month for family insurance, and the company contributed into the insurance pool something like $1,000 a month for each employee. The employee and company contribution was something like $13K per year.
Knowing that increased health costs were projected across the country, they limited this subsidy for retirees to something like $400 a month or about $4.5K a year, with the retiree making up the difference in the insurance pool, as costs rose each year.
As I understood it, if the total per employee/retiree increases, the companies contribution is fixed for retirees, protecting the companies financial health, but not protecting the retiree's costs.
So the company is still contributing to retirees, but not putting itself at risk of losses due to rising health costs.
And of course, the subsidy of about $4500 a year stops at Medicare age, but for many retirees, it still provides a subsidy of about $1,020 each for retiree & spouse to be used for Medicare or health premiums for life.

I did look at alternatives and even shopped the ObamaCare website. I was not able to find any cheaper alternatives and generally the alternatives that were closest in premium price to the FedEx plan did not have the coverage of the FedEx plan: the alternatives had higher out of pocket expenses.

Back in the good "ole" days, I jump seated on a Falcon to Lexington,, Ky. We arrived at the ramp and the Van from the station was supposed to meet us to trainload the freight from the plane. We got there just about daylight and NO van. The Captain waited about 10 minutes and said, come on lets unload this freight on the ramp. We have to go on to our next stop. All the freight was dumped on the ramp, I sat on it and the Falcon departed. Oh yes, and it was raining. I sat there over two hours before the van arrived. The driver had overslept. I was soaked, the freight was soaked, and the manager was pissed... LOL This was before cell phones... There was no one in the FBO. I was stuck.....

I jumped seated a lot, especially when I worked in Operations Audit. Early one mid-winter morning we were flying into Appleton, Wisconsin in a Falcon. It was cold, it was dark, and the ground was covered in snow. We arrived early but the problem with that was that the airport control tower had not opened yet so we had to circle the airport until the control tower opened to give us clearance to land. The captain was clearly perturbed and remarked, "If it was up to me, this part of the country would have never been civilized". The Cheeseheads really enjoyed that story and re-told it like it was a badge of honor.

Karen Sandiford Roberson5/31/2016
My father, John "Buddy" Sandiford, came to work for FedEx in the fall of 1978 as a manager in Fight Operations. I was fortunate enough to secure a part time position in Cash Apps in 1981. As a full time freshman at what was then called "Memphis State", I quickly took advantage of my jump seat privilege, quite frequently camping out at 3am to secure the most sought after flights. On one of these flights, bound for L.A., we had just gotten to our flying altitude when the 2nd officer got up and left the cockpit. Soon after, a red phone in the center of the cockpit rang, the flight Engineer answered it and immediately turned to me and said, "it's for you". Being the naive 18 year old that I was, I didn't hesitate to answer the phone, wanting nothing more than to follow procedures. A voice on the other end of the line identified himself as "Mr. Smith", and he was asking intently if the crew was taking "good care of me", providing me enough beverages and snacks. I quickly responded "yes sir". Only after I had hung up, and the 2nd officer had returned to the cockpit did I realize I had been duped. Years later, I was recanting the story to my father when he disapprovingly replied, "that was YOU?". Apparently I had been the butt of a story he had heard over the years, unbeknownst to him, it was his daughter.

My most memorable jumpseat was quite a trip! It was long ago, can't remember the year, late 70's early 80's? I frequently used the jumpseat to fly from Denver to other points of interest! Normally through Memphis... on this trip, in a glorious Falcon of course, I'm sure you all remember flying the Falcon jumpseat! A very comfortable piece of metal that folded down from the cabin door! Quite roomy too! :) Anyway, back to the story,.... We were flying into Memphis from Denver. The flight had gone without any issues until we reached Memphis. As we turned on to the final leg of our landing pattern and about ready to touch down, a FedEx feeder plane pulled right onto the active runway! Our Runway! We were heading straight for it! imminent collision about to take place! The Co-pilot who was flying the plane seemed frozen and the Captain yelled, "I got it!" and took control of the plane. He veered to the left but couldn't avoid the impact! Our right wing was ripped off and the other plane caught on fire! Luckily we didn't!! All I remember after that was the copilot literally climbing over me to get out of the plane! Ha! Probably to change his pants!! anyway, no one was hurt and I got a great story to tell!

Gary Holmes story
It always tickled me how much energy Gary Holmes(communications programmer) could put into something that could make his like easier. As he started doing triatholons across the world, he used jumpseat to the max. He got tired of waiting until the online jumpseat system opened late into the night. In the mid 80's he wrote a Tandem/3270 program that would logon him on automatically and immediately start making reservations for him, so he didn't have to stay up late....
Later, it was Gary who wrote a simple satirical poem and placed it on his Runner's usenet board. It was some satire on why everyone needed to support the pilots who were unionizing. Several pilots that ran & bicycled with him saw it, thought it was funny and passed to some other pilots. In 24 hours that poem was spread around the world and the pilot steering committee used it (as if it was seriously written) as a rallying cry for all pilots to support the union. Gary then received a call, that he had been banned for life from jumpseating...from the union.
That banishment didn't hold up and eventually Gary got to jumpseat once again, until we all lost that benefit.

I wondered, Mary. A lo-o-o-ng time ago, about 1996) I distinctly remember a co-work complaining in a SFA meeting complaining about not getting COLAs. COST OF LIVING (as I remember it)
At one point in the 80's you could get up to a 10% merit increase, every 6 months if under midpoint, or one year if over.
The merit system was changed to something like 4% max, but with cost of living raises, which were about 1% a quarter then; Inflation hit and cost of living went to 3% a quarter which we received for a couple quarters..........Before the end of the fiscal year.....all this changed and they settled on 5% max every 6 months or a year...and cost of living went away forever...

Dave Dalton used to tell a story about the Burroughs box. He said that if it was just running a few jobs concurrently it would do fine but if it was running about 20 jobs at the same time, it would not get anything done because all of the CPU time would be spent swapping jobs in and out. I always thought that was a good analogy to human multi-tasking but our threshold is way below 20.
Jimmy Glenn Burk6/30/2016
A good number of FedExr's came to the company via Data Communications Corp (DCC) in Memphis. DCC had a Burroughs 6700, Burroughs 7700 and a Honeywell Multics mainframe. DCC processed accounting, advertising, billings and scheduling for over 500 television and radio stations, so the machines were running many programs real time for these companies. Either Burroughs or someone at DCC wrote a systems level program actually called 'Swapper' to keep the OS from swapping before the transactions could be finished. It worked quite well.
At least 20 or more from DCC ended up at Federal Express.

One of the significant improvements was to use fixed length I/O records allowing greater management of disk and memory read/writes over the normal random length I/Os. The same process could have worked well for FedEx, but when the Burroughs CEO would not kowtow to Charlie's demands he was hell-bent on going to IBM. At the time the airline and car rental systems ran on IBM 360s using Airline Control Program operating system to achieve the high transaction rates demanded of those industries. It was expected that FedEx transaction rates could reach those same levels. So the Wizard of Avis and his minions were hired and the facility at Colorado Springs was built for their use. Some where well into the development, Charlie Germano had the audacity to suggest that IMS could now handle the expected transaction rate for COSMOS. As you know, somewhere down the line COSMOS was converted to IMS. The Burroughs systems were unceremoniously kicked out, still containing the round chip I put in the square hole to fix the processor late one night.

History tidbit: About 7 years after the IBM/COSMOS system replaced the Burroughs mainframe, I was called to FWS office to listen to Charlie Brandon make a proposal to the company. It may have been that Charlie was under a consultant contract or maybe he was just paying a visit. His recommendation was about Zapmail and his recommendation was to build a 2nd network based totally on IBM to just handle the admin messages for Zapmail. He went over stability factors of IBM and why etc. It would have been financially prohibitive and admin messages weren't a problem. It was the only time I every met him. After the meeting, and Charlie had left, FWS gave me some new assignments to go research, none related to what Mr. Brandon was talking about and I went on my way. He did seem like a very nice person.

Answer....as told to me by Mr. Barksdale was that the company couldn't grow and take the development time needed with assembly language programming. It was taking a year for small changes and a year for any major changes. Although all of the above were also correct answers also.

Are you speaking about the Sperry Univac disaster
Akita Hank7/1/2016
Akita Hank
That, the reason you had to do that, the outcome, and how you worked out a deal with ACP development guys for a near-term solution.
Akita Hank7/1/2016
Akita Hank
A big problem with the initial implementation of Cosmos on ACP was response time to the terminals. We ultimately had to purchase a Network monitoring system to indicate problems to the mainframe or to the network. Nearly all of the data indicated main frame problems. The main frame guys obtained the hardware monitors and were able to nail down their problems. There were always continuing tensions between mainframe and network folks primarily because of competition between mainframe and network directors, egged on by Jim Barksdale of course.

Answer: To easily enable other buildings to be leased to companies other that FedEx. The projected hire rate in the late 90's was 500 IT professionals a year...which sounds high but that was the projection. In case the company's plans ever changed, they could rent the buildings. Because of the large number of new hires, IT Services also formed it's own recruitment department.

FedEx History TriviaIn Federal Express' infancy, the company required an airbill on the package. Companie's that shipped hundreds of packages found this tedious and unneccesary. Express Manifest?
Jimmy Glenn Burk6/28/2016
Answer: UPS Blue Label
Ray Lipham6/28/2016
Ray Lipham
I guess Express Manifest was offered to compete with Blue Label. It did not require an airbill. You just stuck a sticker on the package and the sticker had the airbill number. Express Manifest predated customer automation. Quite frankly, it was pretty much of a mess for operations to try to handle.

However, delay getting tests done today (June 29) at hospital because Dr. office requested "pre-cert" based on me being primary on insurance. Nope. Even tho it doesn't change until July 1, they had to do the pre-cert with her as the primary. Bought some very low carb bagels from California.Pkg was shipped frozen from California on Monday via Home Delivery to 4129 loch meade.Rcvd email that package was delivered to my front door at 12:15pm.My home office is 10' from the front door....no package.
Contacted FedEx by txt message, and they couldn't help...asked that I call customer service.Cust Service said it would take up to 2 days for them to trace....to which I replied...this is a perishable item...2 days won't cut it....she then put me on hold while she called the station directly....
Came back and said she had called twice and no one answered...but would let them know so they could find the package quickly...At 7pm...my package was delivered by my neighbor, 10 houses down whose address is 4219 loch meade, by Tammy Payne who still works at FedEx..... it had been delivered by a dyslexic driver evidently. So, my package was delivered by FedEx...kind of...
Thanks Tammy!

FedEx History Trivia
Answer any of the following True or False; these have been listed before, but always fun to remember...
1. A package once was picked up before the customer could hang up while talking to Customer Service for dispatch
2. A courier couldn't open a drop box, so he loaded the drop box in the back of his van, to make sure packages weren't left
3. FedEx tested automated drop boxes in the late 70's
4. An employee once rented a helicopter to fly to an antenna tower in heavy snow, jumped out of the helicopter because it was too dangerous to land, and fixed a repeater so that dispatches could transmit; he was later fired
5. Customer Service in the early days could satisfy claims on their own up to $100
6. Federal Express once spent over $60M a year to expedite packages that were left behind in the hub
7. Once there were so many abandoned calls to the call center, reason was there wasn't enough capacity at the ACD (voice switch)
8. When a vendor refused to build more DADS terminals(to force FedEx to buy their more expensive & newer terminal), a departement in FedEX just redesigned it, and built over 45,000 units, saving over $100M
9. Pilots were provided a toll free number to Memphis which allowed them to make phones calls free to anywhere in the country. One of the largest users of this number was college students.
10. The Overnight Letter was a strategic direction that all the executives supported.

Answers to best of my memory
1. A package once was picked up before the customer could hang up while talking to Customer Service for dispatch
True, it initially took 1-2 hours for a courier to arrive for a pickup, but after DADS and terminals were installed in the van, the courier had the info in less than a minute. Customers would generally call for a pickup hours before they would have it ready. A courier made a delivery to one customer, got back in his truck and dispatch was on his screen for a business next door; the customer was still on the phone asking the agent a question and the courier came in and said 'where is my package'..... it set a new standard about when you had to have the package ready.
2. A courier couldn't open a drop box, so he loaded the drop box in the back of his van, to make sure packages weren't left
TRUE; he either forgot his key or key wouldn't work...so he made the pickup anyway...by tilting the drop box over and pushing into his van
3. FedEx tested automated drop boxes in the late 70's
FALSE, but they were tested in 1981 with printers, phones and a small srg
4. An employee once rented a helicopter to fly to an antenna tower in heavy snow, jumped out of the helicopter because it was too dangerous to land, and fixed a repeater so that dispatches could transmit; he was later fired
TRUE and FALSE; this did happen, but I don't think he was fired for this helicopter rental.....could be fired for any independent thought or unapproved purchase years later
5. Customer Service in the early days could satisfy claims on their own up to $100
TRUE; in one example a person ordered Memphis BBQ to be shipped for his mother's birthday at a senior home in Florida. It did not arrive. The agent got on the phone and found a highly recommended BBQ place in that city and had it delivered to the customer's mother.
6. Federal Express once spent over $60M a year to expedite packages that were left behind in the hub
TRUE
7. Once there were so many abandoned calls to the call center, reason was there wasn't enough capacity at the ACD (voice switch)
FALSE; reason in this case was that upper mgmt dictated required training to everyone and so few people were on the phones, that each call center took agents off line, and set their ACD switches to route the calls to the next call center....every call center did the same and calls were going everywhere, and not being answered
8. When a vendor refused to build more DADS terminals(to force FedEx to buy their more expensive & newer terminal), an engineering department in FedEX just redesigned it, and built over 45,000 units, saving over $100M
TRUE, Bruce Lindow and his engineering team, with much suffering and brilliance developed and had the terminals manufactured.
9. Pilots were provided a toll free number to Memphis which allowed them to make phones calls free to anywhere in the country. One of the largest users of this number was college students.
TRUE, once some pilots gave the number to their children at college, all the college students in the world got hold of the number
10. The Overnight Letter was a strategic direction that all the executives supported.
FALSE, many executives thought it was a crazy idea....but Mr. Smith's opinion prevailed fortunately

in the 90's the SuperTrackers wouldn't hold a full days charge. In some cases the batteries even melted. SIS experimented with battery chargers in the vehicles to no avail.Because the batteries wouldn't hold the charges, tens of thousands of batteries were thrown away each month.A QAT was formed led by me, with the majority of the work done by Bruce Lindow & Scot Struminger's teams to solve that issue and many more. What was the primary reason for the battery problem?
Akita Hank7/27/2016
Akita Hank
The charging circuit was overcharging the batteries causing the batteries to become defective.
Jimmy Glenn Burk7/30/2016
If my memory is correct, Ancel's answer is pretty close.
the batteries were not being charged properly...and by continuing to overcharge, there was an memory effect on the batteries in which they never held a viable charge. The batteries actually had to be drained and then recharged. Bruce Lindow & dept designed a 'battery hospital' to cycle the batteries correctly.

FedEx was one of the first transportation companies to deploy timeplex and I-Net switches to integrate voice and date across it's network. It then started a subsidiary Telecom enterprise called FITC to buy and sell telecommunications services, it then deployed an X.25 network to integrate 3270 and packet traffic, followed by a CISCO router network across all it's locations.Who was the 2nd company, which followed just about everything FedEx did, but years later....and even sent a thank you message to FedEx for working out the kinks in these technologies...so they didn't have to?

Your post on the Internet reminded me. We were using Western Union as a fax service for the call centers to send Customs clearance documents. In the late 1980s Technical Support used Western Union to exchange messages with IBM's internal PROFS using the x.400 protocol. Some of the FedEx Ops Research folks wanted to exchange messages with university professors who were using the newfangled Internet e-mail. I approached our Western Union rep about connecting FedEx's EMC2 to the Internet. He said he would check on it. He came back in a week or two and said he must have misunderstood me. He couldn't find anyone who knew what the Internet was.
Jimmy Glenn Burk7/29/2016
Answers:
a. the person that signed a free 30 day direct connect circuit to the Internet was sent to signature jail
TRUE, although signature jail only lasted a couple days...in this case
b. upper management didn't want to support this or pay for it
TRUE, we did it anyway; Major cost savings were being realized from work that Dale Browning and Irene Williams were doing on consolidating network costs; we decided to take some of those savings and just do it anyway
c. it cost $1,000 a month
FALSE
It cost $5,000 a month; the Internet was so new, the closest connection point for Memphis was St. Louis, so the majority of this cost was a 56kbps direct line circuit to that location
d. the only FedEx users of the Internet were technical people using usenet support groups
TRUE

Just got off the phone call with Dr. Ron Ponder. He follows the ITD Breakfast group and enjoys everyone's postings. He fondly remembers working with so many good and hardworking people at FedEx as he and all of us built systems that had never been done in the industry. For those that didn't know Dr. Ponder, he built FedEx's Operations Research department from scratch and that group was heavily involved in all decisions from where to fly the planes, what forecast of volumes from every zip to zip, which planes to fly and optimum routes and schedules to fly them. He then managed a consolidated department of Operations Research and IE or SIS, Strategic Integrated systems. After Jim Barksdale was promoted from CIO to COO of the company, Dr. Ponder was chosen to be the new SVP/CIO of IT and Operations Research. He led the IT department into a new real time communications world where FedEx expanded into , Customer Automation, International Systems, Cosmos IIB package tracking, and many other systems. Many people fondly remember him setting up the first major Project Managment meetings, affectionally called the Ponderama's that allowed interaction of many groups....and use of a green fish...He left FedEx in the early 90's to become the CIO and then COO of Sprint and many other high level positions in the industry.I'm hoping we can tape an interview with Dr. Ponder in the near future, he has a lot of valuable history tidbits and memories inside his head.

This photo was taken at the Nonconnah Fall Festival around Halloween 96. It was a regular event in the Telecom group held behind 2828 Business Park which boardered Nonconnah creek.
Most of the ladies in the photo worked in Customer Automation for Jim Thannum on Airways.
In the evenings at the location, roaming, were ladies of the evening, to the point that if a lady employee worked late, they were escorted to their cars for their safety.
Since the Fall Festival was around Halloween many dressed in costumes and this group happened to dressed as shown.
Barry Poole was a volunteer for the Sheriff's department and wore his uniform(he mentioned that he did this because it allowed him to speed anywhere he wanted...)

Subject: FedEx is adopting the purple and orange colors of its FedEx Express unit for all operating units.
Jimmy Glenn Burk8/24/2016
FedEx is adopting the purple and orange colors of its FedEx Express unit for all operating units.By Wayne Risher of The Commercial AppealFedEx Corp. is making purple and orange the official colors of its farflung network of planes, trucks and people.Chairman Frederick W. Smith announced to employees Wednesday that the company would adopt the 43-year-old FedEx combination of purple and orange as its unified color scheme.Over the next five years or so the company will scrap other colors -- red, green, blue, platinum -- that have been paired with purple to differentiate operating units including FedEx Ground, FedEx Freight and FedEx Office. The simplified palette won't alter separation of Express, Ground and Freight into different operating units, although company officials acknowledged the public doesn't always distinguish among the units."We are certainly one brand to the world, and we're aware of that and proud of the fact that our brand is recognized as one of the most powerful brands in the world," said Patrick Fitzgerald, senior vice president, marketing and communications.Purple has always been the Memphis-based company's primary color and is firmly imbedded in corporate culture. The company mission, dubbed the Purple Promise, is that employees will make every FedEx experience outstanding.FedEx began using secondary colors other than orange in the late 1990s after it diversified beyond the express business into trucking-only offerings.Domestic parcel delivery company FedEx Ground's logo is purple and green, for example, while less-than-truckload company FedEx Freight is purple and red.FedEx's research finds strong consumer awareness globally of its purple and orange logo, Fitzgerald said."It became more and more clear to us that there would be strength in going to the simplified visual identity," he said."It's clear when you look at the iconic FedEx Express packaging, the white box with purple and orange logo, it's 43 years of establishment, across the drop boxes and vehicles and aircraft. It's been built up over time, and it makes sense," Fitzgerald said.Fitzgerald said the timing is right because this year's acquisition of Europe's TNT Express "provided us an opportunity to create a simpler global brand."No immediate change is planned in the TNT Express brand, although Fitzgerald noted TNT's official color is FedEx orange.

FedEx Trivia QuizThe Norand Smartbase was a PC based controller that communicated to COSMOS (SNA) on one side, and on the other side, connected to QuadRacks where all the supertrackers were inserted to dump their scans to COSMOS, and to charge their batteries. When developed, there was a specification set where there would be NO KEYBOARD on this device....because employees would find a way to play with it, and lock up this device which was for one purpose, get the scans into COSMOS. He wanted a simple keypad so even monkeys couldn't lock it up.Who set this requirement?
Jimmy Glenn Burk8/30/2016
Answer: It was Dr. Ron Ponder
It was a hilarious meeting talking about how to keep station employees using this system to collect scans, as a computer terminal. I think other systems had been blown up by employees just hitting the wrong sequence of keys, and he was wanting that problem to stop. This controller used an IBM like computer motherboard, but there was only a small display and small keyboard on the system to encourage station employees to not play with it....

Did you ever bid into a job solely to work for manager that was there and/or did not bid, to stay where you were?
----
At one time in Services, and maybe still, mgmt wanted to rotate more managers and experienced employees into other groups. This was primarily to increase skill sets for individuals across more than just one department and to develop more expertise in certain areas, versus having to depend on just a few knowledgeable people.Mgmt was totally surprised that employees didn't want to rotate and most didn't want to move to another city, even for more opportunities.Even more surprising was that many employees had bid into jobs just to work for one manager whom they trusted to watch out for them and who were honest with them.

I used it a good bit. Traveled to Boston many times, to San Jose, San Francisco, Phoenix, and to Ft Lauderdale a few times. It wad a nice Perk as long as you didn't mind getting somewhere at 3 or 4 a.m. Jumpseated for business a few times as well. I would have guessed more people (1%) used the benefit.

I jumpseated out of Houston to Los Angeles, Denver & Tulsa. Non-automated. I had to set my alarm for midnight, since (as I recall) 12:01 is when reservations started taking calls for 2 weeks out. Redial, redial for 30 minutes sometimes to finally get through. Early am spent in the jumpseat trailer dozing in an easy chair with my travel alarm set so I wouldn't miss my outbound flight. I definitely had more time than money back then. :)

Paris, Brussels, London Stansted, L.A.(Burbank), New York (Newark), Philadelphia (many times), all personal trips. Many, many business trips back to Memphis - I always knew I could count on FedEx to get me home at night. One business trip was on a FedEx 747 to Newark! Sue and I made our final jumpseat trip to Seattle in April 2000, right before we got the benefit ripped out from under us. We sure did enjoy and appreciate it all those years that we had it.

Correction Jimmy I had one installed between the TAB conference room and the Pilot Administration Bldg on Sprinkle mid seventies at $60K each with plans to install one in Anchorage. We set up a 18' X 6' screen with three rear projectors. Not sure of the dates when your more cost effective solution was available but questing mid eighties
Edited ·
Jimmy Glenn Burk9/22/2016
Didn't know about the Pilot Admin one.
First I dealt with was the COS to MEM link for development and planning.
Second I remember was MEM to DCA for Mr. Smith & Legal team to talk to the Washington FedEx lawyers
just a history tidbit... around the mid 1990's FWS wanted somehow to get closer to employees in the field to get their feedback. He envisioned that he could walk to his conference room and have regular conversations with groups of employees at a different stations or locations every week. But telecom costs were prohibitive at the time. He even had us look into the satellite dishes mounted on trucks used at NFL football games with the possibility of those trucks roaming the country to set up sessions with the employees. It was also cost prohibitive at the time.
Peter Dangerfield9/22/2016
Peter Dangerfield
Cleave Seal wanted to have a link to Anchorage hub for pilot meetings. We did the test in Memphis but is was too expensive to move forward. Funding dried up about the time to implement, also the user interface wasn't as easy as the ones today.

This past week a FedEx tradition was once again celebrated.... 10-4 Day hosted by the Radio Group. I couldn't attend, was keeping two grandchildren for a couple days due to their mother's surgery. Hope that all had a great time.Thought I would post a memory. This photo was taken for a Corporate article of some of the people still at FedEx that played a part in initially birthing DADS, which grew to a large nationwide private radio and terminal network. Over 386 locations, 42,000 + computer terminals in the vans, and over 5 million transactions a day, and also enabling the first real time posting of delivery scans for customers do know where their packages were.Shown is JJ Woods, Richard Dunn, Jim Bentley and myself. Jim Moore had already departed FedEx to start his own company...Nathan Lemmon and others should have been in the photo, but they pulled the article together quickly and didn't go out searching for everyone.

It was cargo. We flew from Mem to Indy(I think). On takeoff the Captains seat slipped and it came straight back and pinned my feet. He was short and the seat was all the way forward. Once that happened he could not get the seat back and the right seat had to take over the takeoff. It happened as soon as he rotated. I will never forget, my feet and ankles were really bruised, and it took until we leveled off till he could get the seat back forward.

I didn't have Jim's painful experience, but I clearly remember jumpseating into Orlando on a 737 IN THE FOG! We were about 50 feet above the ground when the runway suddenly appeared in front of us. It was so foggy that when I walked out to the street side of the FedEx facility, I couldn't figure out where the street was, and then nearly got run over by the Hertz bus. That was the night I developed great respect for FedEx pilots and realized that they earn every penny they are paid.

Several of us, The TPC, were at Santa Teresa when the IBM IMS team told DHJ and us they would no longer enhance IMS as the customer base was too small. IBM also said they would make clusters of servers rather than ever larger mainframes. SUN and HP were telling us much the same thing. Turned out not to be so but that was best external technical advice we could get. Even Gartner predicted only DB2 and Oracle would survive as DBMS's. So DHJ made the technical decision to move in the Unix/C/Sybase direction. If anything he should be faulted only for his poor bedside manner and lack of close personal interaction with the internal technology experts, mainly since they were adamantly opposed.

FedEx Trivia/Philosophical question:a. In the early 80's, why did FedEx abandon the Operating System that COSMOS was developed on (ACP/TPF) and retrain all the COS programmers to COBOL and move to IBM's IMS operating system?b. In the mid 90's, why did FedEx move most new applications to a Unix/C platform instead of putting new applications on the IBM mainframes?
Ben Moore10/24/2016

a. ACP programmers were too expensive. Nobody told Flying Tiger that though.
b. Because of Dennis Jones.

There were very few of us Assembler Language ACP/PARS programmers.
Akita Hank10/26/2016
Akita Hank
A. In addition, transaction rates did not grow to the volume expected that would have required ACP, and IMS was improved to handle higher transaction rates. I believe availability of assembler language programmers \, and the longer lead times for development are as much or more reason than the expense.

Has anyone gotten a popup message saying error code 0x80016CFA and giving a phone number to call for help? Laptop is making a loud beep and the only way to get out of it is to go through Task Manager. It's an Asus laptop if that makes a difference. Any advice?
Jimmy Glenn Burk10/25/2016
I did a quick look up and it seems to be an Adware pop-up scam. You may need to run something like Malearebytes, which is free to clean it out. You can maybe use the task manager to end the browser task, if you haven't done that already.

August 2003 - Learjets were grounded for FAA concerns over tail parts. Corporate jets were impacted.
Jimmy Glenn Burk11/11/2016
from the times I remember:
1. On Federal Express's first night, there were about 6 Falcon jets and about 6 packages on March 12th, 1973. Falcon flights were then shut down for a month, and passenger airlines used. Charlie Brandon was in charge of modelling/revamping the 11 city network to a 25 city network. Flights took off again on April 17th with a projected volume of 163 packages. 186 was the package count. March 12 was redefined by the company as the Test flight.
2. Aug 3, 1981 when the Air Traffic Controllers went off their jobs. Ronald Reagan gave them 48 hours to return to work and a majority were fired. Military controllers were brought in to open the skies, but flights were only allowed during the day. Federal Express was able to get that changed.
3. Y2K: All flights were grounded during the time change to ensure that none of the computer systems were affected.

Food for thought. I am just recovering from colorectal cancer, which has been a painful 2 year journey. I'm looking at quarterly CT scans for the next few years. As expensive as it is, I've had excellent medical care thanks to our insurance. As high as it is, it's been there when I needed it the most. You never know if/when you'll need it.

The test was mainly so the crew wouldn't have to rescue jump seaters in an emergency. They could be a help instead of a hindrance if they knew the emergency procedures. But yes they were technically "auxiliary crew members" according to the FAA and a captain told me I should log the time even though I was only checked out for single engine.
