Debora Williams Waller I assume you are pre-65 and FedEx Express. Look at the plans and make the calls to help with your decision. 1 ·

Lynda Baker11/8/2018

Lynda Baker Yes. I am 58. I have a long way to 65 but probably won’t be able to have insurance. Sad

Glenda Williams11/8/2018

Glenda Williams Just called wageworks and they will continue my cobra plan (total cost for medical, dental and vision is at $503) until June 2019. They are mailing my enrollment paper this week. Not looking forward to paying double with Fedex retiree plan at $1200

Debora Williams Waller11/8/2018

Debora Williams Waller It may be in your packet.... see if you are offered the Health Reinbursement Account to help pay for your FedEx medical premiums. That way your monthly medical costs will be lower. I don't know what FedEx is offering new retirees.

Glenda Williams11/8/2018

Glenda Williams I was offered 30k , already spent $6k, so it does help.

Laura Ladd Beard11/8/2018

Laura Ladd Beard Just curious, is the cobra plan the same as the retiree plan for medical? I currently pay $1,268 for medical, dental and vision. My medical is the 80/20% plan.

Glenda Williams11/8/2018

Glenda Williams Laura Ladd Beard ..... it was the same plan as the consumer choice when I was working. 1 ·

Fred Curcio11/9/2018

Fred Curcio Was it $503 for one person or 2 ? 1 ·

Mark W Evans11/9/2018

Mark W Evans You can only stay on Cobra for 18 months once you leave the company

Laura Ladd Beard11/9/2018

Laura Ladd Beard Mark W Evans I had no idea you could go back on the retiree plan once you go on cobra.

Mark W Evans11/9/2018

Mark W Evans Actually I stayed on Cobra for 18 months before going on the retiree plan. I do not think you can go the the other way (Retiree to COBRA). 1 ·

Laura Ladd Beard11/9/2018

Laura Ladd Beard Interesting. It certainly appears to be a good way to go

Glenda Williams11/9/2018

Don Beethe11/9/2018

Don Beethe Yeah, it is.. Which old gang? the mainframe group? All have retired or took the buyout. Not sure there are many left of that group :)

Larry Smithson11/9/2018

Larry Smithson Latest I've heard is Nov. 15th announcement and also rumored that the criteria is age+service=90, but I've also heard age+service=80. Who knows. I'll be short either way, if that's the case. :-)

If anyone in Memphis having a problem enrolling in FedEx Retiree 70 Broad via the annual enroll?

Jodie Harden11/9/2018

Jodie Harden Yes! I’ve had multiple discussions with Benefits about it. The last thing I was told was that “70 Broad Plan is NOT an option for Memphis based retirees”, even though the system let me enroll in it, 11/2/2019. I am awaiting a call back, with more info. 1 ·

Mark W Evans11/9/2018

Mark W Evans Thanks. I saw it as an option on Tuesday 11/6 but not today. My enrollment document stated my default would be 70 broad if I did not enroll. Something has changed in the last 3 days

Jodie Harden11/9/2018

Jodie Harden If I get my call, I’ll post what I’m told “this time”! 🤪

Mark W Evans11/9/2018

Mark W Evans Thanks Jodie. This is a mess

Jane Meredith Robbins11/9/2018

Jane Meredith Robbins Someone told me they were also told it’s not available in Memphis. I think I saw a footnote in the material that says that too.

Mark W Evans11/9/2018

Mark W Evans Thanks Jane. I do see that footnote in the Enrollment Guide booklet but my Enrollment Notice stated otherwise

Jane Meredith Robbins11/9/2018

Jane Meredith Robbins Mark W Evans check out the narrow network. I’ve had it for 2 years. All generic meds are free. It’s 70% but I’ve only used it for well and routine care so I’ve paid $0. Never thought I’d say it but I can’t wait to be 65! 2 ·

Mark W Evans11/9/2018

Mark W Evans Thanks Jane. I do know I would have to change my current physician for sure

Jane Meredith Robbins11/9/2018

Jane Meredith Robbins Mark W Evans that does make a difference. Mine is in the narrow network.

Rogers Gossett11/9/2018

Rogers Gossett 70 broad wasn't even an option for active employees in MEM, FYI.

Jane Meredith Robbins11/10/2018

Jane Meredith Robbins Rogers Gossett yep. Thats that we were saying 1 ·

Rogers Gossett11/10/2018

Rogers Gossett ...which probably means it was a good/better option.. lol 1 ·

Lisa Daniel11/12/2018

Lisa Daniel After reading these posts, I called the Retiree Line to verify as I signed up on 70 broad, that was my default. They said I was in 70 narrow. The vendor could not tell me if my doctor was on 70 narrow. I called Cigna and they verified she is. Still considering 80 narrow before Nov 16 deadline

Mark W Evans11/12/2018

Mark W Evans Thanks Lisa. Also they tell me the deadline is now 11/27

Lisa Daniel11/12/2018

Lisa Daniel Mark W Evans thanks

Jane Meredith Robbins11/12/2018

Jane Meredith Robbins Just wondered if anyone checked out the DENTAL Cigna HMO. It is considerably cheaper than the PPO ($21 vs $48 per month). There is no annual maximum. Cigna said it is cheaper because of the network. My dentist is in the PPO but not the HMO. I'm calling to see if they are considering the HMO since it is now being offered to FedEx employees and retirees. I'm sure it reduces what the dentist is paid so some won't be interested. 1 ·

Rogers Gossett11/12/2018

Rogers Gossett I initially did the HMO for the exact same reason you point out, and then I got a letter from my daughter's dentist saying, "You FedEx customers looking at that HMO, know that we don't do that, so if you want to stick with us, you have to go the PPO route." [although worded more professionally]. That HMO looked pretty awesome, though. 1 ·

Lisa Daniel11/12/2018

Lisa Daniel I had dropped Cigna PPO and went with AON Met Life last year. It was terrible, would not cover anything. Went back to PPO per a call to my dentist...they said don’t go HMO route 1 ·

Memphis, Pre-65 Retiree Heath Plan opportunity. I performed a search for my vision care clinic, by clinic name. No plan choices displayed. Then I did a search by the doctors name and the vision plan choices displayed. So if the system does not display your doctor, hospital, vision or dental provider with plan choices, perform an alternate seach to verify.

Subject: Question about Medicare signup

Jimmy Glenn Burk11/12/2018

Question about Medicare signupI received this question from someone in Express. If you are past 65 and continue working,,,, what do you have to do to sign up for Medicare when you actually do retire? I've seen info that there is a special enrollment period for 8 months after you actually retire in which you can enroll but you have to get some type of proof from your company that you had health insurance?

Don Beethe11/12/2018

Don Beethe I'm in this situation.

Debora Williams Waller11/12/2018

Debora Williams Waller The Medicare web site is pretty good and informative FAQ's. https://www.medicare.gov/forms-help-resources/medicare-you-handbook/download-medicare-you-in-different-formats Download "Medicare & You" in different formats | Medicare medicare.gov

David Hunt11/12/2018

David Hunt I asked FedEx Health about. You must signup for Medicare Part A when you are suppose to before age 65. Part A becomes secondary to FedEx insurance. Once you retire, you have ( If I remmember right from the web site ) 3 months to sign up for Part B and medigap.

Kathy Duffy-Giancotti11/13/2018

Kathy Duffy-Giancotti You do also have to get a document from FedEx that shows you had qualified health care coverage.

Nice video of FedEx MD-11 flight 9792 MEM-CGN that had to divert to EWR because of a major fuel leak back in April of this year. Live ATC audio with closed captioning and ATC radar, too. Very, very neat, and excellent job by a long time MD11 guy (and whose brother I used to work with in Crew Scheduling several years ago)... Oh.. safely landed in EWR!

[REAL ATC] Fedex MD11 diverts to Newark due to FUEL LEAKING

Mark Hughes11/12/2018

Mark Hughes Wow, the pilots are total professionals and did an incredible job managing the situation. They do that every flight but to be able to listen in and know that they are dealing with an emergency while they fly the plane, keep their cool and handle radio traffic shows that a stressful job it can be. They handled it perfectly. 1 ·

Rogers Gossett11/12/2018

Rogers Gossett Agreed! If you're intrigued by watching such videos, there are lot of them out there, and the VASAviation user is arguably the best one. This is the only one I've seen him do of a FedEx flight... occasionally, there will be a video involving somebody else and you'll hear a FedEx guy chime in. ...be careful, though, since they might be a bit addictive to listen to. There are many that involve fatalities (but remember these are ATC tapes and not cockpit voice recorders/CVRs). Still... might trigger the 'fear of flying' for some folks!

Fred Curcio Has anyone done the continuation of the Life Insurance when retiring ? I called and got a quote from them and it seemed way high to me .

Dawn Taylor Bush3/8/2019

Dawn Taylor Bush Fred Curcio I did and paid $185 per quarter for $100,000. When I turned 60 the premium more than doubled for the same amount so I dropped it.

Gary Phillips3/8/2019

Gary Phillips Fred Curcio I took it but had to reduced the amount by a lot. I was carrying a lot if life insurance. It was going to cost 8-10 times what it did as an employee. I reduced to a 25,000 policy and kept it without any checkups or questions. It nloi w costs me $249 a quarter with Lincoln Financial.

Request....Who is taking the buyout or retiring???

Laura Ladd Beard2/4/2019

Laura Ladd Beard Fred Curcio so, I am currently on the retiree group insurance for medical, dental and vision. In June, I go on Medicare. Last week, I asked benefits if I can go on dental and vision cobra. They said yes and that I should receive the forms after June 1. I have attached a picture from the most current benefits book that addresses this. It also says I should be eligible. IF I understand the attached article correctly (and I may not), it sounds like only my spouse and eligible dependents would be able to get cobra. The article doesn’t specify the type of insurance, such as medical, dental or vision. I think it is referring to medical. Thoughts or answers?

Fred Curcio2/4/2019

Fred Curcio I thought that if I took the VBO that I could get Cobra for 18 months which is half the cost of retiree medical. When I called the VBO hotline I was told no since I was eligible for retiree healthcare. I am going to call back to verify a few more times since we usually get different answers.

Laura Ladd Beard2/4/2019

Laura Ladd Beard Definitely worth a try. It seems someone on this page said they went on cobra first and then on retiree insurance. I remember this because I didn’t think you could. You may want to make a new post asking if anyone has done that. It’s my understanding that dental and vision cobra is the same as I pay on my retiree plan since retirees pay both company and employee costs.

Martha Thomas And is the absolute best!!! We are proud to have her in the Retiree Club!! See, you don't have to retire to join us! But, everyone does need to remember, unless your HR record shows 'retired', you will not be able to get a retiree ID badge. It won't impact your getting your pension. I get that question a lot from people who want the id so they can get discounts. Our newsletter includes a retiree club 'badge' on the last page. Some of our members who did not 'retire' have found that merchants accept that card and allow them discounts. It won't, however, work on air fare for sure. 2 ·

Terry Smedley Rumor is Bronson, Humphreys, Wheaton, and a few other high level execs (who I don’t know). Also rumor today is the picking order is 1) open positions axed 2) execs 3) employees who are in the process of retirement and 4) the rest of us. Don’t know how true it is. Also rumored that after buyout is complete there will be a 5% pay cut across the board. Again don’t know how true that is. I’m waiting to see the actual offer but leaning towards taking it. 1 ·

Ann Masters2/8/2019

Just a heads up to retirees in the past 5 years. If you selected, for instance, the guaranteed 5 year guaranteed benefits for beneficiary, Fedex retirement has a glitch and at 5 years after retirement, the primary pension stopped paying. Called and they said “oh shoot, should be beneficiaries guarantee not primary pension”. Ooops!!!!

Carolyn Duff2/8/2019

Carolyn Duff What? Is this your pension check or healthcare insurance?

Deby Abbott Jolley2/8/2019

Deby Abbott Jolley That's what I was trying to understand...

Ann Masters2/8/2019

Ann Masters Carolyn Duff and Deby Abbott Jolley it was pension check. 😞. Is actually my husband chuck who selected the 5 year guaranteed beneficiary. He discovered today his February pension didn’t come. 2 ·

Carolyn Duff2/8/2019

Carolyn Duff So your saying he will no longer receive his pension check? That's crazy. I retired 4 years ago I sure don't remember this option 1 ·

Ann Masters2/8/2019

Linda Herring2/8/2019

Carolyn Duff2/8/2019

Ann Masters2/8/2019

Ann Masters Carolyn Duff supposed to hear tomorrow. All this in the middle of the Wells Fargo outage. 😞

Carolyn Duff2/8/2019

Carolyn Duff I took less money monthly so my husband would get half of my monthly check, but only if I die within 10 years.

Ann Masters2/8/2019

Ann Masters Carolyn Duff yes same scenario. Chuck did 5 years and we 5 years no pension check. That’s not how it works!!!! Eeeeek

Carolyn Duff2/8/2019

Carolyn Duff Wow! Wonder how many people this has happened to.

Ann Masters2/8/2019

Ann Masters Carolyn Duff we were talking that having come from IT it would seem like it would be a flag on your name so anyone who hits that mark but maybe it is manual (human error). The first girl he talked to said “well yes you selected the 5 year option”. Ummmmmmm 1 ·

Carolyn Duff2/8/2019

Carolyn Duff There is probably more retirees that did that for spouses than did not. This can't be the first case.

Ann Masters2/8/2019

Ann Masters Carolyn Duff I would think so too!!!!

David Hunt2/8/2019

David Hunt I do not understand. I thought when I died, Sheila would get 75% ( our desired selection ) for the rest of her life. Is that not the case?

Ann Masters2/8/2019

Ann Masters David Hunt you could choose to guarantee for the rest of her life and select a limit on how long to guarantee. So if you passed in 5 years, 10 years, or unlimited, etc. In this case, based on our needs we selected 5 years. So if chuck passed in first 5 years I would get a portion of his. I am also a retiree. When the 5 years came, instead of removing the guarantee of my portion, they dropped his pension. There were numerous options. They should have removed beneficiary guarantee and dropped his pension. Oops!

David Hunt2/8/2019

David Hunt Thank you ... I so much yo learn hopefully in the next few months

Ann Masters2/8/2019

Ann Masters2/8/2019

Ann Masters Update for today. Retirement page now shows he will receive double pension in March. Good except that I guess he is expected to not need his pension until then. Manager who was supposed to call today at 1:00 never called. 😢 1 ·

Carolyn Duff2/8/2019

Carolyn Duff Ann Masters I'm sorry, at least they fixed the problem. I would request emergency check, would be worth looking into. Tell them is a hardship for you. You won't get if you don't ask. 1 ·

Ann Masters2/9/2019

Ann Masters Carolyn Duff thanks for the advice. Chuck called this afternoon. He asked for the manager. The person said “let me go find him” then the call dropped. And when he called back he got the recording they were closed until Monday. Oh my! 2 ·

A little more (but not much) of the backstory. He stepped down from the board of International Paper too. Something still doesn’t smell right with this one.

Mark Hughes2/19/2019

Mark Hughes A propos of nothing, Mr. Bronczek was just elevated to the board of directors, so it would appear that he was still on track for the dream job of being CEO of all of FedEx. When the retirement policy changed, and it became almost certain that Mr. Smith will be staying on indefinitely, that changed the calculus for Mr. Bronczek. He realized his dream wouldn't be attained in the timeframe he anticipated. 1 ·

Shane Borden2/19/2019

Shane Borden Mark Hughes therein lies the slippery slope. As a shareholder, that premise actually concerns me. I voted against that shareholder proposal to increase retirement age. (Proposal actually required the board to refer to vote any bylaw changes). I think it failed. I feel that it would have been a much better transition plan to elevate someone like Bronczek under the watchful eye of FWS rather than delay it indefinitely and lose the talent. If that is what really happened then why on earth would Submaranium take the position with no immediate hope of being elevated? Seems like a bad proposition for him too right? Or are we all missing the real story that this is all in preparation of Richard Smith being prepped for the position? There has been lots of positive news surrounding him lately. Edited · 2 ·

Terry Smedley2/19/2019

Terry Smedley Shane Borden I think there’s definitely more to this than meets the eye. His tenure on the board of IP has nothing to do with Fedex or Fred Smith so the fact that he also stepped down from IP tells me there is something going on. Additionally he was Fred’s golden child and the email sent regarding his departure was not one you’d normally see from someone who was writing about their protege. It feels like there’s trouble somewhere and both Fedex and IP are quickly distancing themselves. Time will tell. 2 ·

For those of you that took the buyout last time I have a couple of questions if you can answer them.1: Following your last day how long did it take to receive your buyout payment ? 2: What taxes were taken out of it ? 3: Was it a direct deposit ?Thanks for the info. The buyout document is making me go blind trying to read it.

Deby Abbott Jolley2/19/2019

Deby Abbott Jolley 1. I don't remember - but it doesn't seem like it was very long - maybe within the first month. 2. There's a statutory flat rate that is required. I think it was at 28% when I took the buyout in 2013. It is probably a good bit lower now. 3. Don't remember - but I think it was direct deposit... 1 ·

Theresa Marie2/19/2019

Theresa Marie Seems like it was about 30 days, and everyone had to take direct deposit. 1 ·

Leigh Pritchett Sawicki2/20/2019

Leigh Pritchett Sawicki I remember it being soon within 30 days. I believe the taxes were figured based on how you have it filed with FedEx. It’s a law that they have to withhold a certain percentage and then according to your yearly tax return you may or may not get money back depending on your yearly income for that specific year. It will be counted along with your salary for gross yearly income Edited · 2 ·

Eva Lantrip2/20/2019

Eva Lantrip It was within 30 days and was direct deposit. Federal law requires the 28% withholding. 1 ·

Karen Burns2/20/2019

Karen Burns Same day as payday, last day of work which was 5/31/13. 25% taxes and they lumped your last paycheck with the 2 year buyout so after taxes it was almost like not getting paid for the last 2 weeks of work. If your paycheck was dd so was buyout paycheck. 2 ·

Gary Phillips2/20/2019

Gary Phillips Yep, everything said above was about what I experienced. Received the pay very quickly. Figure on about 30% to be safe. It is more than like going to affect you taxes for the year.....changed my tax bracket big time. I had owed some money from a short term disability that they were taking out of each paycheck.......they took the reminder out of the buyout payoff.......oouch. Edited · 2 ·

For those of you that took the buyout last time I have a couple of questions if you can answer them.

Jim Raper2/20/2019

Jim Raper This was in the Q&A: . If an employee receives a voluntary buyout, would they be able to increase the amount of tax withholdings at the time the lump sum is paid out? Since these are supplemental earnings, they will be taxed at 22% and not at their W‐4 rate.

Dianne Tingirides2/20/2019

Dianne Tingirides 1. Received within a week 2. Taxes were extremely high 3. Yes, I think it was a direct deposit.

Liddie Money Frederick2/21/2019

Liddie Money Frederick The buyout money was in about a 2 week timeframe, no more, and your last week worked as added to the buyout money, you will kindly give that check to Uncle Sam, you have no choice. And the taxes got a good 30%, which about $30,000, right off the top, you never see it, and it breaks your heart. And if you are retirement age, like i was, everyone else’s Medicare deduction from your SS check was $104.00, mine was $271.00, that buyout did that. The only thing i saw that was good was that years earnings helped push up my SS check total. Edited · 1 ·

Fred Curcio2/21/2019

Fred Curcio Liddie Money Frederick I was curious about the SS total. Trying to decide if I need to wait until after 1/1 or will it report as soon as the check is cut to start SS

Liddie Money Frederick2/21/2019

Liddie Money Frederick if you mean more taken out of your ss for medicare, they keep you a year behind, so it will affect the next years earnings. Since my husband and me file together, his was also $271.00, it hurt us both, but then when that year finally was over, it was like we both got a $200.00 raise on our ss check, because our medicare went to normal. Just curious if anyone knows… Say you’re a resident of Mississippi but move to Tennessee before receiving the buyout check. Would you be exempt from Mississippi state income tax on the buyout payout? Is there a minimum amount of time you have to reside in Tennessee to be exempt from the Mississippi tax?

Laura Ladd Beard2/19/2019

Laura Ladd Beard My guess is the taxes would be based on your address at the time you separated from the company. But I would definitely check with a tax accountant. FYI... pension income is not taxed in MS. Buyout lump sum would be. 3 ·

Connie Morgan2/20/2019

Connie Morgan If you moved during the year either into or out of Mississippi, you will have to file a part-year resident return that taxes you on all of your income for the portion of the year that you were a Mississippi resident. Susie Coyle Richardson2/20/2019

Susie Coyle Richardson Connie Morgan copy Was wondering about ms taxes on the buyout money..so if you moved just before getting it would you be ‘safe’? 1 ·

Connie Morgan2/20/2019

Connie Morgan Susie Coyle Richardson - I would like to think you only pay MS state tax on the monies you rec'd while a resident of MS. I really don't know the rules as I pay J & W Tax to do my taxes so I don't have to think or be responsible. You might can give them a call and ask over the phone. Got this from the MS Income Tax -You are considered a part-year resident and must file the Non-Resident and Part-Year Resident Return, Form 80-205. You will be taxed only on income earned while a resident of Mississippi and you will prorate your deductions and exemptions. https://www.dor.ms.gov/Forms/80100151.pdf

Connie Morgan2/20/2019

Connie Morgan Looks safe Susie Coyle Richardson! Yea - IRS is a bully.

Ray Lipham2/20/2019

Ray Lipham It is also very important that you have made the address changes with your employer. You don't want your employer reporting the income after you move on your W2 as MS state income. 2 ·

Mark W Evans2/20/2019

Mark W Evans Connie, Ray, you are both correct. You only pay MS taxes on money earned as a MS resident. You also need to update your state of residence ASAP in time for it to reflect on that next paycheck. 1 ·

Susie Coyle Richardson2/20/2019

Susie Coyle Richardson Mark W Evans so when is the payout bonus “earned”? The date of the check?

Mark W Evans2/20/2019

Mark W Evans Susie Coyle Richardson , correct. Just remember that process starts a couple weeks before that check date.

Ray Lipham2/21/2019

Ray Lipham I remember years ago when I moved from NC to TN (1979), Federal Express continued to deduct NC state taxes after I was living in TN. They had to alter the records of previous paychecks to account for the income that was mistakenly withheld. So they should be able to correct any recent checks if taxes were withheld after you moved but you don't want to delay getting it fixed, especially not after W2s are created, 1 ·

Connie Morgan2/20/2019

Connie Morgan I would do what Laura Ladd Beard said. Those tax accountants are awesome folks. Just got my taxes completed today in Collierville - J & W Tax Service. Sure don't miss that 30 mile drive to work. Edited · 1 ·

Most have been mentioned and there may be others... When FedEx first launched there was something like 6 aircraft, which brought back something like 5 packages. The air side was shut down and commercial flights used for about a month+; Charlie Brandon and a group used some basic computer tools and modelled what was wrong. It was decided the approx 25 cities were incorrect to start with and other cities were chosen, especially IBM's facility in Rochester. When the FAA air traffic controllers were fired by Reagan, all aircraft were grounded, while they brought in Military air traffic personnel. The original FAA plan was that there would be no night flights anywhere. FWS was able to get that overturned quickly. Y2K 9-11 Edited · 3 ·

Richard Maingault2/26/2019

Richard Maingault That's nuts. If you are pre-65 then you are not on Medicare, but on Cigna. When you go on Medicare you are no longer pre-65 and you loose the HRA. So after you turn 65 you can no longer receive HRA funds in any amount. Of course in you are on Medicare which my spouse is not, then you don't even have an HRA in the amount 400.00 per year. So, I will have to say that for now I did not receive the 100.00 additional. I may have to call. Edited · 2 ·

Steve Gill2/27/2019

Steve Gill Richard Maingault Same for me. If you call please let us know the results. Thanks.

Richard Maingault2/27/2019

Richard Maingault Well I talked to Connectyourcare and did not get much out of the call. What I was told was that you have to qualify for the 100.00. Now we all know that in order to qualify for the 100.00 you have to watch the video. So I told the Customer Service person that since everybody was told that if you watch the video you would get the 100.00, then I would say that everyone who watches the video will qualify. I told him exactly this and then he said well it would be to the FedEx benefits department whether of not we get the 100.00. Bottom line, I just don't know if it worth my time to fight this. Every week I have to fight with someone who owes me money. Mostly all it is related to Medical. Nothing was said about pre-65, and he also said that not everyone will see the Tab that says Earned Credits. He can see it on his side, but I do not have an Earned Credit tab on the Web site when I pull it up.

Judy Davidson2/27/2019

David Hunt2/27/2019

David Hunt There is so much to think about. One thing I learned today is early filling is 30 days before. I will not know which exit date until 4/21. That is just 40 days to get everything done. I wish there was a office I could go to to help instead of email, webinar, or phone. It is a little over whelming 2 ·

Fred Curcio2/27/2019

Fred Curcio David Hunt You can file for retirement 90 days before. If you don’t return the paperwork within 60 days the paperwork is canceled.

Karen Sandiford Roberson2/27/2019

Karen Sandiford Roberson David Hunt agree. Maybe it is just the way the world is moving now. Too much information and not enough clarity. Seems to be a common thread with our retiree processes, and same theme internally within Services for current processes. If you don’t read, re-read, dig and ask questions you will never get answers. 🙄 What happened to the days of documentation and communication? 1 ·

William Feutz2/27/2019

William Feutz Karen Sandiford Roberson they are long gone.

Danielle Harnisch2/27/2019

Danielle Harnisch I took the buyout at age 58 I got the retiree badge. I was with the company for 35 years. I did not start my pension until 59 1/2. All is good . 6 years ago in may. Yeehaw!!!!! 4 ·

Gary Phillips2/27/2019

Gary Phillips Danielle Harnisch exactly the situation my wife has. If she gets to take the vbo, thinking about not starting the pension until 59 1/2. 30 years at FedEx. Edited ·

Larry Smithson2/27/2019

Larry Smithson Also, if you are short on age or years by 18 months, you can bridge the gap with Cobra during that period until you meet the age and years requirement. Example, I’m 53.5 years old with 24 years of service. I can cobra for 18 months until I’m 55 and then file for retirement.

Kim Weaver2/28/2019

Kim Weaver I am 55 with 35 yrs service. Not sure if the VBO and retirement is enough...... 1 ·

Jodie Harden2/27/2019

Jodie Harden No retiree insurance. No retiree badge that gets you on FedEx property without prior management approval. 1 ·

Gary Phillips2/27/2019

Gary Phillips Jodie Harden no FedEx shipping discounts?

Jodie Harden2/27/2019

Jodie Harden Gary Phillips I think that is true but don’t know for sure. The other 2 I’m sure of because I have multiple friends who were in that situation from the previous VBO. 2 ·

Rebecca Felts2/27/2019

Rebecca Felts EVEN if you retire before 55 you don't get a badge and you don't get shipping or travel discounts. I still got my retirement and insurance but I was 6 months from being 55. The badge NO.

Gary Phillips2/27/2019

Gary Phillips Rebecca Felts She's of early retirement age but trying to decide if it's worth the loss of money to delay retirement until 59 1/2.

Jim Raper2/27/2019

Jim Raper If she is over 55 she can take the VBO and retire. She doesn't have to take her pension just because she is retired. She can elect to take that any time. All of the same rules apply with or without the VBO as far as age rqmts. Make sense? 4 ·

Gary Phillips2/27/2019

Gary Phillips Jim Raper true, didn't think sbout that. 1 ·

Helaine Tetzner2/27/2019

Helaine Tetzner Rebecca Felts In 2017 some qualifications were changed. You are now allowed to use Cobra (max 18 months) to bridge the gap to early retirement age. Edited · 1 ·

Helaine Tetzner2/27/2019

Helaine Tetzner To obtain full retirement benefits you need to be with the company 10 yrs if you were grandfathered in otherwise, 20 yrs. Again, Cobra can be used to close that gap. Max 18 months. Changed occurred in 2017. Edited ·

Thank you again Fred for putting it back for 38 years as I never thought of saving a dime for today. I still am not sure 🤔 how it all works out. I am just glad the bank is not running dry! Let it keep on raining $$$! Unfortunately if I made a dollar I thought I should spend two. So glad someone knew of another way to keep it coming. Edited · 1 ·

A week before Christmas, headed to SAN, this FDX Crew declares an emergency but is able to land without further incident. The ATC tape (and vid) is a bit long (10+ mins), but what's not mentioned anywhere is that this was actually the final flight for this Captain before his scheduled retirement after 30 years, 12,000+ flight hours, and around 1500 landings.

Has anyone on here ever worked as a “remote worker” (ie had an alternate work agreement)? If so, was your experience good? Bad? Asking for a “friend” 😉

Carol Mizgorski3/6/2019

Carol Mizgorski In 1988 I worked 2 full shifts Mon through Friday for 2 weeks. 8 hrs in customer service in an Express office and 8 hours in the newly acquired Flying Tigers office to teach the FT people how to use the Fedex computers. 1 ·

Shane Borden3/6/2019

Shane Borden I did for 10 months in 2014 (before I left the company) and seeing that you and I were in the same org this may apply best to you. The arrangement was just fine. You had to sign paperwork which bound you to a code of conduct, subjected you to recall from remote work at any time, standard work hours and you had to commit to having a work area that essentially wasn’t your kitchen table. You are reimbursed for no home office expenses although they did pay for me to travel 3x. Being ineligible for any promotion was the unwritten rule that surprised me the most, especially since that wasn’t the case in other orgs. Hopefully the culture with regards to this has changed, but at the time, it was definitely out of site out of mind. The culture ensured at the time that you became a taskmaster vs. working on more valuable work. You will have to be the one that stays in contact with others. All in all, it accomplished what I needed it to and was thankful for the opportunity. Based on my experience, things will change though and you just have to be ready for it. 1 ·

Terry Smedley3/7/2019

Terry Smedley Shane Borden I thought you’d done that but wasn’t sure. That was helpful - thanks for the info! 1 ·

Shane Borden3/7/2019

Shane Borden Only one thing I left out. Middle of the road yearly reviews should be expected vs. an outperform rating based on my experience. Not sure if that makes much difference on anything anymore, but something to think about.

Terry Smedley Shane Borden Good point.. It's hard to get outstanding performance these days anyhow lol 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/13/2019

In the first years of operations, Federal Express' fleet sat idle in remote cities all day, then were flown at night time and early mornings. To better utilize the aircraft, there was a plan to fly passengers during the day. Five Boeing 737's with roll in seats were purchased and an application made to fly passengers. There was even a secondary plan to offer bus pickup and delivery of the passengers in major cities. Several passenger airlines were looking at the reverse of this plan. Their aircraft sat idle at night and flew passengers during the day. Their plans were to utilize the aircraft to fly freight at night, and offer red-eye inexpensive tickets for those passengers. Some of the airlines tried this approach. There were several reasons this plan was halted. 1-It took over one year to get one license to fly out of one airport(Midway in Chicago). It was going to take years to get approvals from other cities. 2-The oil crisis of 1979 due to the Iranian Revolution had put pressure on all U.S. passenger airlines and they were having financial difficulties. It was felt that a FedEx passenger airline would also have difficulties with fuel costs rising and 3-The base business was growing so fast and FedEx was exponentially expanding, it was decided to concentrate on the core business. 1 ·

Ben Moore fedexlegends.info says it was a COSMOS IIIC device intended for customer usage. Edited ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/12/2019

Answer: The project was called Cosmos IIc or IIIc. Jim Barksdale said he wanted a device that was so simple that his wife(Sally) could use it to ship via Federal Express. The project was under SIS(Strategic Integrated Systems) run by Harry Dalton. The initial scope was a less than $50 device, the size of a calculator that contained customer info(location, account number etc). It would have a button for a Dispatch, to get a courier to come to your business at a certain time. It would also have a zip table, telling the customer if fedex served that area. There was also a button to order supplies, airbills etc. Customer Automation PC's with a printer were around $2,000 when the project began. When the device was eventually built it cost about $1,200 with a small printer...and PC's with a printer had dropped to around $1,400. So it was shelved. It was also during this project that Dr. Ron Ponder edicted that we know longer needed to used the alphabet up with project names. If any project had to do with dispatch or scanning...it would be under the Cosmos IIb umbrella. Previously he had edicted..no more animal names for projects.....because Mr. Smith didn't like the animal names...... Edited ·

What is this system? The system would collect all information about package shipments international, then transmit that info to a Tandem system in those countries to be available long before the aircraft arrived. Customs agents could peruse all the info and select packages ahead of time to be identified and delivered to the customs agent. when the aircraft was unloaded...thus speeding up customs clearance by a day or more.....

Susie Coyle Richardson Marsha Terry Rider not even a traditional pre-tax ira?

Marsha Terry Rider3/23/2019

Marsha Terry Rider Susie Coyle Richardson - I partially mis-stated that. My point was that the Lump-sum likely would be distributed like our VBO money, thus taxed. It would depend on the IRS rules so perhaps it is possible that it could be rolled, like a 401k pre-tax money, into an IRA. But I doubt it. That would be nice but that would be a lot of money to defer taxes on; Uncle Same doesn't like that. He wants it NOW. 3 ·

Theresa Marie3/21/2019

Theresa Marie Depends on how many years we each get. A lump sum could be a much better deal in the long run. If it was invested well in mutual funds it could get a good return that you could live off of. It just depends on how many years are given for it. 4 ·

Timothy Joseph Frassinelli3/22/2019

Timothy Joseph Frassinelli Theresa Marie Yes! You can also take your PPA as a lump sum and roll it into an IRA and defer taxes until withdrawn and/or invest it into mutual funds or a safe dividend stock like AT&T or Ford and get a nice steady income stream while preserving your entire lump sum!

Larry Smithson3/22/2019

Ellen Kirk Hunter3/21/2019

Was wondering if anyone else on here had these unique circumstances with MetLife handling their pension. I’m also a former Flying Tiger employee who took a FedEx buyout in 2013. Never had any issues with State Street but now MetLife, although sending pension in one payment to my bank, is handling the pensions in two separate streams causing 2 separate 1099R forms at tax time. The problem is MetLife took out $600 less in taxes than State Street did For the portion they handled in 2018. The pension checks are still in the same amount that they always were. I’ve spoken to MetLife twice now and they can’t seem to explain why they took out less taxes than State Street or where the extra money went. This is killing me on my income tax this year. Anyone have a clue? Finally, I don’t get any monthly statements from MetLife like I used to get from State Street either.

Debora Williams Waller3/21/2019

Debora Williams Waller In the Welcome to MetLife book I received it says we will receive a 1099 from State Street and another from MetLife. It also states that MetLife is required to obtain a new withholding election from us for their records. I filled mine out and submitted it to MetLife. If a new withholding form is NOT received by MetLife they will default the withholdings in a manner mandated by the IRS (married with 3 Exemptions) In the book it also states that they are attempting to reduce their carbon footprint and will discontinue paper copies of monthly Payment Advices to direct deposits. I hope this helps. Do you have the MetLife web site address for FedEx Retirees? You have to set up a login and password to view your information. 1 ·

Ellen Kirk Hunter3/21/2019

Ellen Kirk Hunter Debora Williams Waller thanks! I will check out the website. They actually have the same withholding that State Street had plus some small amounts for each stream in additional cash, which I’m not sure where those numbers came from, and they STILL didn’t withhold enough. 1 ·

Debora Williams Waller I had to up my withholdings this past year and I only owed $50. Yeah for me! 2 ·

Debora Williams Waller3/21/2019

Debora Williams Waller Sherry Little it was luck. :-)

Deby Abbott Jolley3/21/2019

Deby Abbott Jolley I'm pretty sure the IRS issues new withholding tables every year - and I know that they contained updated income-tax withholding tables for 2018 that reflect changes made by the tax reform law enacted at the end of December, informally known as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Meaning that employers (and pension plans) withheld less than in 2017. https://www.shrm.org/resourcesandtools/hr-topics/compensation/pages/irs-releases-2018-tax-withholding-tables.aspx IRS Issues New Withholding Tables for 2018 shrm.org

Deby Abbott Jolley3/21/2019

Deby Abbott Jolley For me, personally, I changed my W-4 when they did this - to have them withhold a little more than the tables call for - to try to avoid getting dinged in April. 2 ·

Ellen Kirk Hunter3/21/2019

Ellen Kirk Hunter Deby Abbott Jolley But that’s the strange part - they withheld $600 more in 2017 than 2018! BTW there’s an error on Metlife Screen and I can’t get them to fix it either. 1 ·

Deby Abbott Jolley3/21/2019

Deby Abbott Jolley That's what I was trying to explain. The withholding tables changed so that they would have withheld less in 2018 than they did in 2017. It was to compensate for the tax reform law enacted at the end of December 2017 - which reduced the taxes for 2018. 1 ·

Laura Ladd Beard3/22/2019

Laura Ladd Beard In one of the first conference calls about this, they said no. Later, I was told if both husband and wife are receiving it and one of them dies, then the spouse gets the balance. If something happens to that individual, then it goes away and doesn’t become part of the estate. I am really not sure if that’s true but I am sure someone in this group will have the answer. FYI...roy and I decided to get the maximum reimbursement each month and have it deposited into the credit union. My $20k will be depleted next month. We decided we would rather manage the money ourselves. Individual choice. Edited · 1 ·

Laura Ladd Beard3/22/2019

Laura Ladd Beard Gary Phillips I opted to be reimbursed each month for the total amount of my premiums. That is slightly less than $1,300 each month. It’s taken almost 15 months to receive the entire lump sum. So now it’s in my credit union. I hope that makes sense. Edited ·

Laura Ladd Beard Martha Thomas thanks exactly what I have done. It’s in the credit association and will be there when I need it. At a $1,268 monthly reimbursement amount, my HRA is almost empty. But that’s ok. I am thrilled to have it my account

Theresa Marie3/24/2019

Theresa Marie As I recall its only inheritable if both parties are on the same insurance. (if one person is the retiree and the other is not). If both parties are eligible retirees, each has to carry their own insurance separately and in that case the HRA does not pass on to the spouse.

Danny Baser4/3/2019

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/3/2019

Was this the layoff where Legal hired an outside firm to select a process that couldn't be challenged in courts because no one in management had input into who was selected, just the 3rd party? The criteria may have been something crazy like what percentage of your aic you received vs the max you could have received. If you had recently been promoted and got a raise...and were given slightly less than max AIC ...you could be cut... or if you received other bonus income and received a small percentage less AIC ...you were also cut..... I remember several who were cut were past 5 star winners. Not sure if that was the process...but whatever it was, appeared to be really unfair. 2 ·

Carol Jester4/3/2019

Carol Jester Jimmy Glenn Burk it was the lay-off were they hired the outside firm and there were so many versions of the criteria used to cut. The version I tend to believe the most is they were targeting people who had long term service with the company. I was in a work group of 10. My manager had 33 years with company, he lost his job. A co-worker had 32 years with the company, he lost his job. I had 30 years with the company, I lost my job. I am sure there was other criteria as well but I know it was not low performance.

Buddy Johnson4/3/2019

Buddy Johnson Don’t think years with company was a major factor. I had 31.5 years on that day and was not walked out. $$$ and pay grades seemed to be a big factor. I understand each VP could ‘protect’ one person in their organization. This 3rd party allegedly ran multiple scenarios which were reviewed by exec IT management (VP and up) until the exec’s got a scenario they were willing to live with. Lots of intellectual FedEx knowledge lost. 2 ·

Susie Coyle Richardson4/4/2019

Susie Coyle Richardson Jimmy Glenn Burk When I saw the news article that the cuts were coming I thought, “well, they’ll get rid of the slackers and the rest of us will buck up and keep the plates spinning.” Of course we know that’s not what happened. In my opinion, it was a reflection of the huge failure of management who didn’t do their jobs and rate employee performance honestly. If they had done their job all the slackers could have been identified and laid off first. Edited · 2 ·

Martha Thomas4/3/2019

Asking a question for a friend who is doing her taxes. Apparently, the company issuing my pension checks did not change. For those whose pension check issuing company did change, did you get multiple 1000-R's this year (one from State street for about 2/3 and 2 from MetLife for the other 1/3 (or what looks to be about a 2/3 - 1/3 split between State Street and MetLife)? She is trying to do her taxes and asked me. Mine didn't change. All came on one 1099-R from State Street and the total and taxes withheld ties to what is in my Quicken account.

Larry Ratliff4/3/2019

Larry Ratliff I received two forms. The one from State Street had the correct taxes taken out but the one from Met was changed to almost nothing so I had to call and get it changed. May cost me on taxes. 1 ·

Julie SoRelle4/6/2019

Julie SoRelle I retired in 2003, but mine got split between State Street and Met, and Met reduced what had been taken out of mine too.

Martha Thomas4/3/2019

Martha Thomas I wonder why I only got one. I don't think mine ever changed to MetLife. Was there something different about how they handled Director's. Sure wish I knew. I could be missing a form. Seems like MetLife is not totally accurate in year end accounting. Maybe I should send something to our contacts in Accounting. 1 ·

Martha Thomas4/3/2019

Martha Thomas I'm actually suggesting that they call Metlife. I also have an email I just sent to FedEx Accounting - where I think Retiree Benefits now resides.

Thomas A Canale4/3/2019

Thomas A Canale MetLife only assumed monthly pension payments on those retirees who's gross benefit was $2,800 or less. So if your monthly pension is more than $2,800 you stay with State Street and get only one 1099R. 8 ·

Laura Ladd Beard4/3/2019

Loretta Cameron4/3/2019

Loretta Cameron Thomas A Canale you are correct. I am still with State Street.

Ray Lipham4/4/2019

Laura Ladd Beard4/3/2019

Laura Ladd Beard I got two. One from state street and one from met life.

Kathy Guererri Heatherly4/3/2019

Kathy Guererri Heatherly I got two forms, are tax lady did not say any was different..

Ray Lipham4/4/2019

Ray Lipham I think you can get three 1099-Rs for your FedEx pension (without receiving corrected forms) under the following circumstance: Your pension was moved from State Street to Metlife and you turned 59 1/2 during the year, either before or after the move to Metlife. I think they have to use a different distribution code if you are under 59 1/2 and that is the reason the pension gets split across two 1099-Rs. You would include all three 1099-Rs when you file your taxes under those circumstances. Of course if the 1099-R has to be corrected because of error on the initial 1099-R, you would receive multiple 1099-Rs but you would only use the corrected form when you file. 1 ·

Mary Drummond4/5/2019

Mary Drummond My address had changed and I had not notified Metlife so had to request a duplicate.

Mary Drummond4/5/2019

Mary Drummond Got the State Street one and knew that was not accurate.

Subject: FedEx History Trivia

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/3/2019

FedEx History TriviaIn the early 80's Federal Express discouraged anyone in the company shipping via UPS or having vendors ship anything to Federal via UPS. My manager turned back a shipment of $100K in communications equipment because it was shipped by UPS. An SIS director turned back a $10M proposal from a vendor, that he was going to accept...because it was shipped UPS.Then all that changed and you could ship UPS.Why?

Martha Thomas4/3/2019

Martha Thomas

I was to do a training session for the Finance Division of a large company in St. Louis. When my airline ticket arrived, it was in a big brown envelope. Since I was doing the class (for which I had to develop all of the material) for an individual WAY UP at FedEx, I called his office and laughingly told them about the ticket coming UPS. She asked if it was at least first class. I looked at the ticket and said "NO, it is back at the tail in fact). She said put it in a FedEx O/L and send it back that day with no explanation. She said the person who arranged the special class had overheard the telephone conversation and was, at that time, calling the VERY SENIOR officer of the company in St. Louis to tell them I was not coming - and why. The next day, an apology letter arrived in an O/L with a first class ticket and a note that my room at the hotel had been upgraded to a suite. The only thing they didn't do was pick me up at the airport. I got lost about 3 times driving to the hotel the day before the class. Suite was nice, class was great, and first class wasn't worth it for that short a flight. Point, however, was made with that company!!! 6 ·

Allen Stegall4/4/2019

Allen Stegall When I worked for HP in the 90s, our disc drive division in Boise, ID shipped a replacement drive via UPS to FedEx on Airways Blvd and it was rejected and returned . . reshipped and again rejected. I received a call from the HP division about the situation. Apparently, they were not set up to ship UPS, so I asked them to ship it to my house so I could carry it to FedEx.

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/4/2019

Answer: FedEx was growing leaps and bounds as it replaced the Dassault Falcons with Boeing 727's and had plenty capacity at first...but the growth continued faster than expected. Most all customer supplies to the stations, literature, comat, and internal materials were shipped non-rev on the jets. Someone somewhere made the decision that we needed that space for customer shipments...and then it was ok to start shipping via UPS or mail. It was still a stickler to management when major shipments(or bids) came to the company via UPS. We in fact were paying the shipping costs of things shipped to us, to the benefit to our competitor. 5 ·

Hugh Wardlaw4/9/2019

Hugh Wardlaw In the '80's I was with a computer company. USPS did the same thing of not accepting anything but usps shipped material.

Jim Keller5/11/2019

Jim Keller As a long time supplier, I was VERY sensitive to this. It was, in my opinion, disrespectful to ship anything to FedEx other than via FedEx. It was also 'common sense' but sometimes a company's shipping department didn't always have the most alert individuals and they would ship according to their contracts. Still a bad idea. 1 ·

Mary A Johnson4/3/2019

Mary A Johnson That I don't know, but if you sent your resume by UPS, it went directly into the 'circular' file. I saw several managers do that. 2 ·

Debora Williams Waller From Thomas A Canale in a post below. MetLife only assumed monthly pension payments on those retirees who's gross benefit was $2,800 or less. So if your monthly pension is more than $2,800 you stay with State Street and get only one 1099R.

Jack Brown4/4/2019

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/4/2019

Sorry for your loss. Gary always spoke kindly about his father and family. 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/4/2019

Memory Gary graduated from Univ of Memphis with an Electrical Engr degree, like me, but I think Gary also got his Masters. His first job was at DCC in Memphis which handled computing for over 500 TV & Radio Stations around the country. I was a manager at the time and the company was starting a new division called Cylix. Gary was hired and was one of the original 10 employees of Cylix. He was a software programmer for microprocessors and communications software. His department was out of office space, so I shared my office with him for a couple months until they could find a place for him. I then left DCC when offered a job at FedEx to design software for DADS. A year later an opening for a programmer came up and I recommended Gary. As I remember, Gary did not own a tie, a suit or business shoes. He was a jeans and tennis shoe guy. He borrowed his father's suit and shoes and went to an interview with Jim Moore and was hired that day. It was a little large for him. That was the only time I saw Gary in a suit, dress shoes or a tie. I understand he went on a FedEx sales cruise and did wear a tux once. Well there was one other time...for Halloween he once wore a T-shirt with a tie painted on it. Gary never lost his youthfulness and was always the same, as the day I met him. The only thing I saw changed was he picked up a healthy kick and started doing Iron Man triathlons. He was a valuable contributor to many projects @ FedEx. Edited · 2 ·

Rebecca Sutherland4/6/2019

Rebecca Sutherland All of the managers on the third floor ran down the back stairwell to GOCC. Several of the pilots called the pilots answering machine and complained about the jumpseater that day. Pilots said they knew someone would eventually create problems on the jumpseat. We would have lost the jumpseat that day had auburn not been a pilot.

Walt Edmonds4/7/2019

Walt Edmonds Rebecca Sutherland funny, we lost the jumpseat because of a nutty pilot.

Gina Reynolds4/7/2019

Gina Reynolds Rebecca ABSOLUTELY would have girl! I know for a fact had Auburn not been a pilot the cm would have refused to carry any more of us ever again! Heard that in the crew lounge for months! So many of them were STUNNED a “fellow pilot” would do something that horrific! Most all knew he was lying about his creds and capability and was going to be terminated, but no one expected he’d do that. Edited · 2 ·

Gina Reynolds4/7/2019

Gina Reynolds I don’t know if you met Tucker before this Rebecca? He was a sweetheart from the get-go! He was also huge HUGE body builder! I mean his muscles had muscles! And then Auburn took so much from them all, but I think Tucker most of all. I saw pictures of the cockpit and months later of Tucker and he almost looked like a different person. He’d lost at least 60-70 pounds and I was horrified at what happened to him. I still grieve for them when I think about them - how their lives were changed that day. Good men, good pilots who became hero’s. 3 ·

Rebecca Sutherland4/7/2019

Rebecca Sutherland Gina Reynolds i didn’t know Tucker. I think he took the brunt of everything. I have heard Danny Owens was housed at the same facility and beat him up a couple of times. How tragic. 1 ·

Rebecca Sutherland4/7/2019

Rebecca Sutherland Gina Reynolds all the tiger guys were scratching their heads and said auburn had been fired so they were confused to see him on trips. It was a matter of time for him to be refired. 1 ·

Rebecca Sutherland4/7/2019

Rebecca Sutherland Gina Reynolds and Walt Edmonds I sent both of you a private message. 2 ·

Gina Reynolds4/8/2019

Gina Reynolds Rebecca that I know of, he hadn’t been fired before that jumpseat but had an appointment with Fato the following week, which is why he made his move then, so he’d still be employed when the plane went down. He wasn’t a Tiger so don’t know how’d they know? No matter. He was still employed which is why he had the nerve to expect the union to pay his legal fees. What a Goober!! Edited · 2 ·

Rebecca Sutherland4/8/2019

Rebecca Sutherland Gina Reynolds you are right now that I think about it. I stand corrected. Those darn tiger guys starting rumors again! 😂. I guess we could write a second book 25 years later. Where are they now?

Gina Reynolds4/8/2019

Gina Reynolds Rebecca 25 years from now?? Bwahaaaaa girl, maybe YOU can but I’m thinking I’ll be a dot at the end of a chapter!

Ron Houston If I remember correctly several of us in this group were standing outside the offices on/near Democrat and watched it land. . . I remember. It was pretty traumatic. We had heard different 'targets'. HQ, HUB, CAC. Very disturbing and chilling. I've watched the reenactment on YouTube a few times. 1 ·

Walt Edmonds4/8/2019

Walt Edmonds I took the initial call from ATC in GOC it was heart stopping. At first I thought someone was messing with me until I was patched in on the audio with the controller. Myself and a guy by the name of Bruce just happened to be in dispatch control of this flight and it was unbelievable this was happening. We initiated the call to FDX flight management..... One crazy day Edited · 7 ·

Buddy Johnson4/8/2019

Buddy Johnson Walt Edmonds Y’all did a great job getting the flight back safely. 3 ·

Walt Edmonds4/8/2019

Walt Edmonds Buddy Johnson thank you. The real hero's were the crew members onboard. A day not to forget. 3 ·

Martha Thomas4/8/2019

Martha Thomas I was at the CTC. My husband was in Atlanta as was the current Memphis Mayor. All they were told was that there was a problem at the airport. The Mayor could not reach his office due to telephone lines being tied up. My husband got me. I called around and got enough information to call him back and let the Mayor know that Memphis was still here and that there was a crisis on the runway at the airport which related to an incident with a FedEx pilot. 1 ·

David Anderson4/9/2019

David Anderson I was in the hub control room that day. Another rumor (at the time) was that he planned to crash into the FedEx tower in the center of the hub courtyard. Very glad the pilots were the ones on board 1 ·

Thomas Blas5/11/2019

Thomas Blas It didn't get a lot of press but Calloway actually applied to Obama for a pardon. It was not granted. Here is his plea. It will turn you stomach...January 6, 2017 Dear President Obama: I am a 65 year old African-American veteran of the U.S. Navy, [honorably] discharged in 1982. I held a top secret security clearance for nuclear weapons training. I am now the founder of Veteran Community Mentors and author of its Mission Statement (enclosed). I cannot accomplish the mission unless I receive a sentence commutation from you. I hope that you are concerned that after serving my country from 1976 until 1982, I was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment without parole possibility having no prior criminal history except for a few traffic violations. No one was killed in the incident for which I was incarcerated where I brought 4 hammers, cartons of nails, $700 in cash, an uncharged pneumatic speargun which could not have been fired, along with other personal paraphernalia on board a FedEx cargo flight that I had been scheduled to fly the previous and subsequent days. Although I incurred the most serious injuries in the fracas, I took full responsibility and apologized to my fellow crew members in a letter that was published in the local newspaper. I derived no possible benefit from my conduct, which makes what I did a self-victimizing "crime" with no criminal intent. The trial judge, a conservative Republican who removed my case from a rotating docket which would have sent it to the late District Court Judge Jerome Turner (a liberal), instructed the jury with a "general intent" instead of the legally required "specific intent" mens rea element. That was enough to get a guilty verdict instead of a not guilty by reason of insanity verdict, which would have allowed me to receive treatment and be released long ago. The most important question now remaining is whether (A) justice and (B) the public welfare is better served by your exercising your power of clemency in my particular case. The answer to (A) is provided by law professor Kenneth Gallant. The answer to (B) is given by my Mission Statement at VeteranCommunityMentors.org and by my good conduct record for more than two decades of imprisonment. Mercy is yours to grant or deny. President Ford defended his pardon of Richard Nixon by advising the American people to consider how much Nixon had already suffered as a result of his crimes. Ford said "I feel that Richard Nixon and his loved ones have suffered enough and will continue to suffer no matter what I do, no matter what we, as a great and good nation, can do together."(see "Someone Must Write, the End." Newsweek, Sept. 16, 1974, 22). This is where you can direct any naysayers and clemency critics. I hope you agree that it's time for reciprocity for your clemency, which you will get from me and other incarcerated veteran clemency recipients who, like me, dedicate themselves to pursuing a rescue effort in economically and socially beleaguered communities across the United States. I go beyond my request that you grant my clemency with immediate release, and commutations for honorably discharged veterans, by asking that you also stand beside us, shoulder to shoulder, in places like Chicago, when we make our presence known. With you standing there with us, no one will doubt our legitimacy nor oppose our mission! What matters most is that there are good people who have served our country honorably and sacrificially in every branch of the U.S. military, but have also suffered misfortunes under the criminal justice system. From the highest general to the lowest private, we have all served and suffered in one way or another. I believe that incarcerated U.S. veterans deserve clemency despite having no assistance from a "Clemency Project" like that which has helped nonviolent drug offenders. I will close by reminding you that we all love you and your family out here in common-class America. I hope you will reciprocate our love for you with love and mercy toward incarcerated veterans and our families. Thank you in advance for your personal consideration of this clemency request. God Bless You, Auburn Calloway Veteran Community Mentors veterancommunitymentors.org 3 ·
